3、Subject: Open Type SPDsDECISION:1.1 These requirements cover enclosed and open-type Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) designed forrepeated limiting of transient voltage surges as specified in the standard on 50 or 60 Hz power circuits notexceeding 1000 V and designated as follows:Type 1 Permanently co
4、nnected SPDs intended for installation between the secondary of theservice transformer and the line side of the service equipment overcurrent device, as well asthe load side, including watt-hour meter socket enclosures and Molded Case SPDs intended tobe installed without an external overcurrent prot
5、ective device.Type 2 Permanently connected SPDs intended for installation on the load side of the serviceequipment overcurrent device; including SPDs located at the branch panel and Molded CaseSPDs.Type 3 Point of utilization SPDs, installed at a minimum conductor length of 10 meters (30feet) from t
6、he electrical service panel to the point of utilization, for example cord connected,direct plug-in, receptacle type and SPDs installed at the utilization equipment being protected.See marking in 80.3. The distance (10 meters) is exclusive of conductors provided with or usedto attach SPDs.Type 4 Comp
7、onent Assemblies Component assembly consisting of one or more Type 5components together with a disconnect (integral or external) or a means of complying with thelimited current tests in 44.4.Type 1, 2, 3 Component Assemblies Consists of a Type 4 component assembly with internalor external short circ
8、uit protection.Type 5 Discrete component surge suppressors, such as MOVs that may be mounted on aPWB, connected by its leads or provided within an enclosure with mounting means and wiringterminations.3.11.1 ENCLOSED SPD A SPD provided with a complete enclosure in accordance with the constructionrequ
9、irements of this standard.3.25.1 OPEN-TYPE SPD A Type 1, 2 or 3 SPD, with an incomplete or partial enclosure and with fieldwiring terminals and/or leads, suitable for field installation, in accordance with the National Electrical Code,ANSI/NFPA 70, within a suitable enclosure.UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL

11、through an opening in or as part of anenclosure shall comply with the Enclosure requirements for the SPD Type.14.1.1.5 An SPD provided with integral pigtail leads intended for connection in the field to a power supplycircuit conductor shall be provided with a conduit connection means that is accepta
12、ble in accordance withthe National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA-70.Exception: Conduit connection means are not required for open-type SPDs.14.1.1.8 A permanently-connected SPD shall have a field-wiring terminal, wiring lead, conduit fitting, aknockout or other opening in the enclosure and wire bending
13、 space, for the connection of a wiring systemin accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA-70 and acceptable for the purposeException No. 1: An enclosure need not have provision for the connection of a wiring system, such as aconduit hub, a knockout or a fitting, if it is intended to be
14、 drilled or punched in the field to accommodatea wiring system and is provided with appropriate installation instructions.Exception No. 2: Conduit fittings, knockouts, other openings in the enclosure and wire bending space, forthe connection of a wiring system are not required for open-type SPDs.18.
15、9 For open-type SPDs, the spacings between live parts and metal parts that may be grounded, suchas the heads of mounting screws that pass through an insulating panel, shall be judged as if they weregrounded parts within an enclosure. The spacing between uninsulated live parts and the surface on whic
16、hthe device may be mounted is to be judged as if the mounting surface were part of an enclosure.39.16 Open-type SPDs, subjected to the Temperature Test, shall be mounted in an enclosure consideredrepresentative of the intended use. The maximum enclosure dimensions are to be determined by one ofthe f
17、ollowing methods:a) 150 percent of the dimensions of the device that is, length, width, and height;b) Dimensions needed to meet the wire-bending space specified in UL 508, Table 6.8;c) The intended enclosure, such as a standard outlet box; ord) The intended enclosure, which may be larger than indica
18、ted in 39.16(a) (c) provided thesize is marked on the device, detailed in the installation instructions or provided on a separatestuffer sheet. (See 80.35).44.1.11 Pass criteria During and following the tests described in 44.2.1 44.4.2, the following conditionsshall not result:a) Emission of flame,
19、molten metal, glowing or flaming particles through any openings(preexisting or created as a result of the test) in the product.b) Charring, glowing, or flaming of the supporting surface, tissue paper, or cheesecloth.c) Ignition of the enclosureSTANDARD NUMBER: UL 1449 -2-UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT

For open-type SPDsonly, this applies to parts intended
21、to be installed through an opening in or as part of anenclosure.e) Loss of structural integrity to a degree that the equipment collapses or experiences suchdisplacement of parts that there is a risk of short-circuiting or grounding of current-carryingparts.f) Opening (external to the SPD) of the sma
22、llest gauge wire specified in 44.2.2.61.1.1 A Type 3 SPD employing a metallic or non-metallic enclosure and a Type 1 or Type 2 SPDemploying a non-metallic enclosure is to be subjected to the impact tests described in 61.2.1 61.4.2without any occurrence of the following:a) Creation of any openings in
23、 the enclosure that results in accessibility of live parts, whenjudged in accordance with Accessibility of Live Parts, Section 13.b) Any condition that might affect the safe mechanical performance of the SPD.c) Any other condition that increases the risk of electric shock.Exception: Impact Testing i
24、s not required for the housing of open-type SPDs not intended to function asenclosures.79.5 Status or alarm circuit connections provided within SPDs shall be provided with the followingelectrical ratings: voltage (volts), ac power frequency (Hz) or direct current (dc), current (amperes), typeof load
