3、 equipment andfitness facilities. Its goal is to help alert and remind users of safe practices in utilizing fitnessequipment. Like any other physical activity, exercise involving fitness equipment presents a potentialfor injury. No label or sign alone can prevent all injuries, especially when fitnes

4、s equipment is usedimproperly. The ultimate responsibility for preventing injury lies with the equipment owner orequipment user, or both. This specification, however, intends to promote proper fitness equipmentpractices through standardization of signage and label requirements.1. Scope1.1 This speci

5、fication establishes requirements for safetysignage and labels for fitness equipment as defined in 3.1.4 andfitness facilities as defined in 3.1.5. Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 aerobic fitness equipment, nfitness equipment de-signed to condition a group of muscles aerobically.3.1.2

7、 consumer fitness equipment, nfitness equipment in-tended for use by one person or one family unit.3.1.3 control panel, nthe console on fitness equipmentwhere the user chooses/enters an exercise routine or resistancelevel.3.1.4 fitness equipment, na machine or bench designed foruse in exercising spe

Label and Sign Classifications4.1 Hazard ClassificationProduct safety signs and labelsshall be classified according to the relative seriousness of thepotential hazards. The classifications shall be noted by thesigna

22、l words danger, warning and caution. Fitness facilitysigns are classified as general safety signs and shall use signalwords such as safety first, be careful and think.4.1.1 DangerIndicates an imminently hazardous situationwhich, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. Thissignal word

23、 is to be limited to the most extreme situations.4.1.2 WarningIndicates a potentially hazardous situation,which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.4.1.3 CautionIndicates a potentially hazardous situation,which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.It may also

24、be used to alert against unsafe practices.4.2 Signal Word Panel ColorThe signal word panel colorshall comply with ANSI Z535.1 as follows:4.2.1 DangerThe signal word danger shall be in whiteletters on a safety red background. The PMS color for thebackground shall be Pantone 179C.4.2.2 WarningThe sign

25、al word warning shall be in blackletters on a safety orange background. The PMS color for thebackground shall be Pantone 152C.4.2.3 CautionThe signal word caution shall be in blackletters on a safety yellow background. The PMS color for thebackground shall be Pantone 108C.4.2.4 General Safety Sign S

26、ignal Word(s)The signalword(s) for this type of sign or label shall be in white letters ona safety green background. The PMS color for the backgroundshall be Pantone 3415C.4.3 Multiple Hazard Identification:4.3.1 One Sign or LabelWhen more than one hazardsituation exists in close proximity to one an

27、other, they may beaddressed on the same label or sign providing that theinformation for each hazard is presented effectively.4.3.2 Level of SeriousnessWhen multiple hazards areaddressed on one label, the hazard with the greatest level ofseverity shall be addressed first. The remaining hazards shall

28、bepresented in order according to their relative levels of severity.5. Label Design5.1 General Warning Label:5.1.1 Hazard ClassificationFitness equipment shall beclassified as potentially hazardous. If attention is not paid tothe conditions of equipment usage, death or serious injurycould occur.5.1.

29、2 Signal Word The signal word for this label shall bewarning.5.1.3 Label Design Design of the label shall comply withall applicable ANSI and ASTM standards for signal word andsignal icon placement, signal word panel design and color,message style and content, and letter size and placement (seeFig. 1

30、).5.1.3.1 Label OrientationVertical or horizontal label ori-entation may be used (see Fig. 1).5.1.3.2 Pictorial PanelPictorials may be used providedthey have been tested in accordance with ANSI Z535 for useracceptance and understandability and give the user immediaterecognition of the applicable haz

31、ard(s).5.1.3.3 BorderA contrast shall exist between the label andthe mounting location on the fitness equipment. It is preferablethat a border measuring at least 0.06 in. surround the entirelabel. When this is not possible, such as when the generalwarning label is incorporated into an instruction pl

32、ate orcontrol panel, a contrast shall exist between the warnings andthe remainder of the words or instructions present on thecontrol panel or instruction panel. This contrast shall beachieved by making the background of the warning a differentcolor or shade than the remainder of the instruction/cont

33、rolpanel.5.1.3.4 ColorWhen the general label is to be applied tothe fitness equipment, and it is not to be incorporated within theinstruction or control panel, the signal word panel shall besafety orange. The remainder of the label shall be white and aborder as defined in 5.1.3.3 shall be present. W

34、hen the generalwarning is incorporated within an instruction or control panel,special circumstances may preclude the use of the colorparameters detailed above. The general warning area shallachieve contrast with the rest of the instruction plate or controlF 17492panel. This shall be accomplished by

35、bordering or incorporat-ing, or both, contrasting colors or shades. In no case shall thesignal word panel be yellow, red, or green when the signalword warning is used.5.1.3.5 Lettering Statement of hazard lettering and signalword warning shall be sans serif. Upper or lower case lettersmay be used wi

36、thin the statement of hazard. The signal wordshall be all upper case letters. The bottom of the signal iconshall be in line with the bottom of the signal word.(1) Letter SizeThe letter size comprising the statement ofhazard shall be a minimum of 0.06 in. in height. The signalword shall be a minimum

37、of 0.16 in. in height and at least 50 %greater size than the words comprising the statement of hazard.When the general warning label is included within the instruc-tions of the control panel or exercise instruction plate, the lettersize for the statement of hazard shall be equal to or exceed themini

38、mum letter height used for the height of all other words.5.1.3.6 Mounting LocationThe label shall be positionedwhere it will be encountered by the user prior to commencingexercise.5.1.3.7 Material and Expected LifeThe label shall beprinted on durable material using fade resistant inks or paints.The

39、label shall not be obliterated through normal use orforeseeable misuse.5.1.4 Minimum WordingAt a minimum, the label mustaddress the following items:5.1.4.1 The possibility of serious injuries or death, or both,(if applicable) if caution is not used.5.1.4.2 All warnings and instructions be read and f

40、ollowedand proper instruction be obtained prior to use.5.1.4.3 Replace label if damaged, illegible, or removed.5.1.4.4 Specific items that may be addressed in existingASTM standards for particular fitness equipment.5.2 Site Specific Label Design:FIG. 1 Horizontal and Vertical General Warning Label L

41、ayoutF 174935.2.1 Hazard ClassificationClassifications established in4.1 shall be used.5.2.2 Signal Word The signal words caution, warning anddanger set forth in 3.1.18 and defined in 4.1 generally shall beused. However, these signal words are not required if pictorialsare used in accordance with 5.

42、2.3.2.5.2.3 Label DesignLabel design shall comply with appli-cable ANSI standards for signal word placement, surroundshape, signal word panel design, signal icon, statement ofhazard, letter size, and placement.5.2.3.1 Label OrientationVertical or horizontal label ori-entation may be used. (see Fig.

43、2).5.2.3.2 PictorialsPictorials may be used provided theyhave been tested in accordance with ANSI Z535 for useracceptance and understandability and give the user immediaterecognition of the applicable hazard(s). A signal word is notrequired if the proper surround shape is used in accordancewith appl

44、icable ANSI standards. (see Fig. 2).(1) Surround ShapeThe surround shape shall comply withapplicable ANSI standards. Surround shapes for site specificlabels alerting users to potential hazards in the immediate areaof the equipment shall be a triangle or diamond. Pictorials thatare used as part of a

45、multi-panel label are not required to havesurround shapes. The shape of the site specific label may serveas the surround shape.5.2.3.3 BorderThe border shall conform to 5.1.3.3.5.2.3.4 ColorThe color of the signal word panel shallmatch the designation defined by 4.2. The remainder of thelabel shall

46、be white. If a pictorial only is used, the color shallmatch the criteria defined in the applicable ANSI standards, asfollows:(1) DangerWhite image on a safety red background.(2) WarningBlack image on a safety orange background.(3) CautionBlack image on a safety yellow background.5.2.3.5 LetteringIn

47、accordance with ANSI Z535, all let-tering must be sans serif and may be a combination of upperand lower case letters.(1) Letter SizeThe letter size shall conform to 5.1.3.5 (1).5.2.3.6 Mounting LocationSite specific labels shall bepermanently affixed to the equipment in the immediate area ofthe appl

48、icable hazard. The labels must be noticeable andreadily accessible to the user.5.2.3.7 Material and Expected LifeThe label shall con-form to 5.1.3.7.5.2.4 Minimum Wording Wording on site specific labelsshall be concise. Only the hazards posed in the immediate areaof the label shall be addressed.5.2.

49、5 The following potential hazards shall have site spe-cific labels: amputation or crushing locations, pinch or nippoint, areas of electrical shock, body or clothing interferenceareas, and locations requiring regular maintenance or inspec-tion.5.2.5.1 These potential hazards may be addressed in ASTMstandards for fitness equipment.6. Fitness Facility Safety Sign6.1 PurposeA fitness facility sign reiterates and drawsattention to the potential hazards present in all fitness equip-ment. It is not intended to substitute for
