Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThis specification sets forth guidelines for signage and labels associated with fitness
3、 equipment andfitness facilities. Its goal is to help alert and remind users of safe practices in utilizing fitnessequipment. Like any other physical activity, exercise involving fitness equipment presents a potentialfor injury. No label or sign alone can prevent all injuries, especially when fitnes
4、s equipment is usedimproperly. The ultimate responsibility for preventing injury lies with the equipment owner orequipment user, or both. This specification, however, intends to promote proper fitness equipmentpractices through standardization of signage and label requirements.1. Scope1.1 This speci
5、fication establishes requirements for safetysignage and labels for fitness equipment as defined in 3.1.4 andfitness facilities as defined in 3.1.5. Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 aerobic fitness equipment, nfitness equipment de-signed to condition a group of muscles aerobically.3.1.2
7、 consumer fitness equipment, nfitness equipment in-tended for use by one person or one family unit.3.1.3 control panel, nthe console on fitness equipmentwhere the user chooses/enters an exercise routine or resistancelevel.3.1.4 fitness equipment, na machine or bench designed foruse in exercising spe
8、cific or multiple muscles of the body.3.1.5 fitness facility, na location where people go to useinstitutional fitness equipment.3.1.6 fitness facility equipment sign, na sign designedwithin the scope of this specification and complying with allapplicable ANSI standards that is posted within a fitnes
9、sfacility and alerts users to potential hazards associated withinstitutional fitness equipment.3.1.6.1 DiscussionA fitness facility equipment sign isconsidered a general safety sign.3.1.7 free weight strength equipment, n strength equip-ment designed to accept individual weight plates or to support/
10、accept a lifting bar with individual weight plates secured to it.3.1.8 general safety sign, na sign addressing safe exercisepractices, proper safety procedures, and the location of safetyequipment.3.1.9 general safety sign signal word, n brief word(s) atthe top of a general safety sign designed to d
11、raw attention tothe sign.3.1.9.1 DiscussionExamples of these words includesafety first, be careful and think. The words danger, warningand caution shall not be used (see also signal word).3.1.10 general warning label, na label designed in accor-dance with this specification that is affixed to a port
12、ion of thefitness equipment and draws attention to potential hazardsassociated with the use of that fitness equipment.3.1.11 hazard classification, nchoice of a signal wordbased on the seriousness of the related potential hazard.3.1.12 institutional fitness equipment, n fitness equipmentintended for

18、ef word(s) at the top of a labeldesigned to draw attention to that label.3.1.18.1 DiscussionThe word(s) convey the degree orlevel of seriousness of a potential hazard. Examples of signalwords are danger, warning and caution (see also general safetysign signal word).3.1.19 signal word panel, nthe loc
19、ation in which thesignal word(s) is/are placed.3.1.19.1 DiscussionThe color and placement of the signalword panel shall comply with all applicable ANSI standardsand 4.2.3.1.20 site specific label, na label designed within thescope of this specification affixed to fitness equipment thatdraws attentio
20、n to a potential hazard in the immediate area ofthe label.3.1.21 statement of hazard, nthe words that describe thehazard(s) or the potential consequences, or both, of notavoiding the hazard(s).3.1.22 strength equipment, nfitness equipment designedto strengthen one or more groups of muscles anaerobic

Label and Sign Classifications4.1 Hazard ClassificationProduct safety signs and labelsshall be classified according to the relative seriousness of thepotential hazards. The classifications shall be noted by thesigna
22、l words danger, warning and caution. Fitness facilitysigns are classified as general safety signs and shall use signalwords such as safety first, be careful and think.4.1.1 DangerIndicates an imminently hazardous situationwhich, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. Thissignal word
23、 is to be limited to the most extreme situations.4.1.2 WarningIndicates a potentially hazardous situation,which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.4.1.3 CautionIndicates a potentially hazardous situation,which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury.It may also
24、be used to alert against unsafe practices.4.2 Signal Word Panel ColorThe signal word panel colorshall comply with ANSI Z535.1 as follows:4.2.1 DangerThe signal word danger shall be in whiteletters on a safety red background. The PMS color for thebackground shall be Pantone 179C.4.2.2 WarningThe sign
