Scope1.1 This specification covers acceptance criteria for thesu
3、rface inspection of steel castings when nondestructivelyexamined by magnetic particle or liquid penetrant inspection.1.2 This specification is to be used wherever the inquiry,contract, order, or specification states that the acceptancestandards for magnetic particle or liquid penetrant inspectionsha
4、ll be in accordance with Specification A 903/A 903M.1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text the SIunits are shown in brackets. The values stated in each systemare not exact equivalents; therefore each system must be usedi

6、r indicationsan indication whose length isequal to or greater than three times its width shall be classifiedas a linear indication.3.1.2 nonlinear indicationsan indication whose length isless than three times its width shall be classified as nonlinear.3.1.3 relevant indicationsrelevant indications a
7、re indica-tions which result from mechanical discontinuities. Only indi-cations whose major dimension exceeds116 in. 1.6 mm shallbe considered relevant.4. Ordering Information4.1 The inquiry and order should indicate the followinginformation:4.1.1 Nondestructive PracticePractice E 165 for liquidpene
8、trant inspection or Guide E 709 for magnetic particleinspection. Unless a specific technique within a practice isspecified, the choice shall be the option of the manufacturer.4.1.2 Personnel Qualifications.4.1.3 Extent of InspectionThe number of castings and theextent of casting surfaces to be exami
9、ned.4.1.4 Acceptance LevelIf more than one acceptance levelis specified for different locations, a nondestructive test draw-ing identifying acceptance levels and locations should accom-pany the inquiry and order.4.1.5 Supplementary Requirements, if any.5. Personnel Qualifications5.1 Personnel perfor
10、ming examination shall be qualified inaccordance with an acceptable written procedure as agreedupon between the purchaser and manufacturer.6. Evaluation of Indications6.1 All relevant indications shall be evaluated in terms ofthe acceptance criteria.6.2 Mechanical discontinuities are indicated by bl
11、eed-out ofthe penetrant or retention of the magnetic particle examinationmedium. However, false indications may be produced bylocalized surface irregularities, metallurgical discontinuities, ormagnetic permeability variations. Any indication in excess ofthe acceptance criteria which is believed to b
12、e false may bereexamined. Surface conditioning may precede reexamination.When agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser,the liquid penetrant method may be used to verify the presenceof surface discontinuities which had been previously indicatedby the magnetic particle method.6.3 Broad areas
