14、cification for bags and boxesPart 3: Specification for thermal packs.1 ScopeThis part of EN 12546 specifies requirements for portable domestic food and/or drinkinsulated containers such as boxes, chests and bags, intended to contain generally wrapped orpackaged foods and/or drinks in their own conta

15、iners.It does not apply to insulated bags designed specifically for short term storage andtransportation of frozen foods, containers fitted with a device for production or removal ofheat, containers for industrial or catering uses, or insulated flasks and jugs.It does not deal with the requirements

16、for materials in contact with food which are defined bylegislation already in existence.2 DefinitionsFor the purposes of this standard the following definitions apply2.1 Insulated containercontainer, consisting of an inner container and an outer protective case with an insulantbetween them in order

18、od and/or drinks as hot bags or hot boxes.2.2 Nominal capacity.declared inner usable volume in litres.3 Requirements3.1 CapacityThe capacity measured according to 4.1 shall not differ from the nominal capacity by morethan 5 % for rigid containers and 10 % for flexible containers.3.2 Insulation perfo

23、gid containers4.1.1.1 PrincipleThe empty container is weighed, filled with water, and weighed again. The mass of water iscalculated and used to estimate the actual volume.4.1.1.2 Apparatus and test materials4.1.1.2.1 Domestic tap water4.1.1.2.2 Weighing machine capable of weighing the filled insulat

27、ntainers4.1.2.1 PrincipleThe empty container under test is weighed, filled with spherical balls of polystyrene or othersuitable material, and weighed again. The apparent density of the balls is measured. The massof balls is calculated and used to estimate the actual volume.4.1.2.2 Apparatus and test

28、 materials4.1.2.2.1 Spherical balls of polystyrene, or other suitable material, having a diameter ofbetween 4 mm and 8 mm.4.1.2.2.2 Receptacles with defined inner volumes of 1 l, 5 l and 20 l.4.1.2.2.3 Weighing machine capable of weighing the filled insulated container to anaccuracy of 0,1g.4.1.2.3

29、Procedure4.1.2.3.1 Fill the 1 l receptacle with the balls. Lightly compress the balls, remove theballs from the container and weigh the balls. Repeat using the 5 l receptacle, and then usingthe 20 l receptacle.4.1.2.3.2 Ensure the container under test is completely empty. Remove all removableaccesso

30、ries and weigh the container.4.1.2.3.3 Fill the container under test with the balls, compress the balls lightly and closethe container. 32、e mass in grams of the empty container4.2 Insulation performance4.2.1 PrincipleAn insulated container is pre-cooled with water and then half filled with cool water and thetime taken for the water to rise to a given temperature is measured.4.2.2. Apparatus and test materials4.2.2.1 Domestic tap water

33、 at (5 1)C4.2.2.2 Thermocouple capable of measuring to an accuracy of 0,5C4.2.2.3 Clock accurate to 1 minute4.2.3 Procedure4.2.3.1 Ensure the container under test is completely empty.4.2.3.2 Condition the container to be tested for 24 h at an ambient temperature of (32 1)C.4.2.3.3 Fill the empty con

34、tainer to half its nominal capacity by pouring the water (4.2.2.1)into it. Leave for 5 min then empty. Immediately refill the container to half its nominalcapacity by pouring the water (4.2.2.1) into it. Insert the thermocouple (4.2.2.2) toapproximately half the depth of the water. Close the lid and

35、 start the clock (4.2.2.3).4.2.3.4 Maintain the container in the ambient temperature of (32 1)C and measure andrecord the temperature of the water in the container every 15 min until it rises to 15C.4.2.4 Expression of resultsRecord the time taken for the temperature to rise to 15C.4.3 Impact test4.

36、3.1 PrincipleThe container under test is loaded with sand, dropped on its base and corners and assessed fordamage.4.3.2 Apparatus and test materials4.3.2.1 Concrete floor4.3.2.2 Sand at (-5 1C)NOTE:The sand can be wrapped in polyethylene bags and muslin to preventdisplacement of the centre of gravit

Close thecontainer and leave for 1 h.4.3.3.2 Raise the container so the point of impact is (500 50) mm above the concrete flo

38、orand allow it to fall freely so that the base impacts on the concrete floor.4.3.3.3 Repeat the test but realign the test specimen such that one corner of the base impactsthe floor.4.3.3.4 Repeat the test for the other corners of the base.4.4 Handle strength test4.4.1 PrincipleThe handle of the cont

39、ainer is attached by means of a canvas strap to a fixed support. Thecontainer is raised and allowed to fall such that the canvas strap causes the fall to be suddenlyarrested.4.4.2 Apparatus and test materials4.4.2.1 Sand at (-5 1)CNOTE:The sand can be wrapped in polyethylene bags and muslin to preve

40、ntdisplacement of the centre of gravity.4.4.2.2 Canvas strap of the same width as the handle of the container and of sufficient lengthto allow slack of 100 mm once attached at both ends.4.4.2.3 Inelastic support fixed at a height such that container when suspended from it usingthe canvas strap, hang

41、s freely.4.4.2.4 Lifting and dropping device4.4.3 Procedure4.4.3.1 Fill the container with 0,5 kg of sand for every litre of capacity. Close and leave for 1h.4.4.3.2 Attach one end of the canvas strap to the handle of the container. Attach the other endof the canvas strap to the inelastic support. A

42、llow the container to fall freely before beinginstantly arrested by means of a positive stop incorporated into the inelastic support.4.4.3.3 Raise the container vertically through 100 mm causing the canvas strap to becomeslack. Release the container and allow it to fall freely such that its fall is

43、instantly arrested bythe canvas strap acting on the handles.BS EN 12546-2:2000Page 8EN 12546-2:20004.4.3.4 Repeat the procedure for a total of 10 falls.4.5 Seepage test4.5.1 PrincipleColoured water containing a wetting agent is introduced into the container under test which isshaken in order to wet

44、all the internal surfaces. The container is dismantled to assess seepageof the coloured water from the inner container to the insulant.4.5.2 Apparatus4.5.2.1 Coloured water containing 1,0 gram per litre wetting agent and a small quantity ofintensely coloured non-colour fast water soluble dye.NOTE 1:

45、 Domestic washing up liquid is suitable for the wetting agent.NOTE 2: Fluorescein is suitable for the dye. For ease of determination of results,a colour which contrasts with that of the construction of the container under testshould be chosen.4.5.3 Procedure4.5.3.1 Place into the container under tes

46、t a quantity of coloured water approximately equal to25% of its nominal capacity. Close the container.4.5.3.2 Shake the container up and down through a distance of (200 50) mm, 25 times in(15 1) s.4.5.3.3 Empty the container. Dry all exposed surfaces. If the container under test is a bagwhich is cla

47、imed to be washable follow the washing instructions to wash the bag and allow todry thoroughly.4.5.3.4 Dismantle or cut apart the container to reveal the insulant and examine the insulantbetween the inner container and the outer protective case to assess any seepage into theinsulant.5 Marking and la

48、belling5.1 The insulated container shall be legibly labelled or marked with the following:a) the name or identification mark of the manufacturer, distributor or vendor,b) the insulation performance pictogram (see 3.2),c) the number of this EN 12546-2d) the nominal capacity (see 3.1),5.2 Additional i
