13、 the organisms causing the infection. This organism could be transferred to another room or ward by the equipment, but the risk of infecting another patient is small. Nevertheless, the risk to certain patients, e.g.highly immunosuppressed patients, is higher than normal and additional precautions sh

14、ould be taken. In any vacuum pick-up system, the exhausted air may discharge or redistribute small numbers of microbes. If this represents displacement of organisms within a room from one part to another or to another area, without substantially increasing the count or altering its nature, this woul

15、d be acceptable in all but the most sensitive areas. Some organisms are likely to grow in fluids or moist equipment and precautions are necessary to avoid spraying them into the environment. 1 Scope This BritishStandard gives recommendations which are intended to minimize any infection risk associat

16、ed with the use on carpets and soft floor coverings of hot water spray extraction cleaning machines designed to comply with BS5415-2.3. NOTEThe title of the publication referred to in this standard is given on the inside back cover. 2 Areas to be cleaned 2.1 General Areas within a hospital which are

17、 carpeted or covered by soft floor coverings may, for the purposes of being cleaned by hot water spray extraction machines, be divided into three categories. 2.2 Category1 areas Category1 includes carpeted areas in administrative offices, residences, corridors, etc., i.e.any not used for the followi

18、ng: a) treatment or diagnosis of patients; b) preparation, storage or service of food; c) preparation, storage or distribution of clinical or pharmaceutical products; d) storage, distribution or handling of clinical specimens or cadavers. Equipment may be transferred freely from any category1area to

19、 any other category1area and no special restrictions need be placed on the equipment for use in these areas. 2.3 Category2 areas Category2 includes carpeted areas used for the following: a) treatment or diagnosis of patients; b) preparation, storage or service of food. Equipment used in a category2

20、area should be cleaned and decontaminated in accordance with a written procedure (seeAppendix A) as a matter of hospital policy (seeclause4). 2.4 Category3 areas 2.4.1 General Category3 includes carpeted areas at special risk, including areas used for the treatment of patients with suppressed immuni

21、ty, children under3 months old, patients suffering from infections requiring specific isolation measures, or any other area designated as a category3 area by a microbiologist or infection control doctor. NOTEAreas used for such purposes do not normally have a carpet or soft floor covering. 2.4.2 Res

22、trictions of use in a category3 area Spray extraction machines should not be used in a category3 area without the prior agreement of the microbiologist or infection control doctor who should consider the risk associated with transfer of organisms to or from other areas, the need to restrict entry of

23、 staff and the need to implement decontamination procedures prior to cleaning, before agreeing to their use. If use is agreed, equipment used in a category3 area should be cleaned and decontaminated in accordance with a written procedure (seeAppendix A) as a matter of hospital policy (seeclause4). E

24、quipment should not be transferred from any category3 area to any other category3 area without prior consultation with the infection control doctor. Prohibition or further limitation may be imposed by the microbiologist or infection control doctor if considered necessary. 3 Guidelines on suitability

25、 of equipment and materials for different category areas 3.1 Category1 areas There are no special microbiological requirements for equipment used in category1 areas.BS7460:1991 2 BSI 01-2000 3.2 Category2 and3 areas Equipment for use in category2 and3 areas should have a cleaning agent tank heater c

26、apable of heating the cleaning agent to a minimum temperature of70 C. Prior to purchase of a spray extraction machine, consideration should be given to the ease of cleaning and decontamination of it. Spray extraction machines should be examined and their suitability for use reviewed at regular inter

27、vals. 3.3 Cleaning agents The suitability and compatibility of any cleaning agents used in the machine for carpet cleaning in hospitals should be assessed by the microbiologist or infection control doctor. 4 Cleaning and decontamination procedure Written procedures for cleaning and decontamination o

28、f each type of equipment should be incorporated into the relevant hospital policy. Anexample of a suitable procedure for a hot water extraction machine is given in Appendix A.BS7460:1991 BSI 01-2000 3 Appendix AExample of cleaning and decontamination procedure for equipment used in category2 and3 ar

29、eas A.1 Cleaning procedure after each use The following steps should be carried out. a) Remove equipment from occupied areas before cleaning, which should be carried out as soon as is practicable. b) Empty clean and waste tanks. Fill clean tank with clean water. c) Switch on heater and allow to reac

30、h working temperature which should be at least70 C. d) Place the cleaning head in the waste tank or suitable receptacle and operate pump for3min at70 C or for1min at80 C. Care should be taken to prevent splashing of hot water during this operation. e) Turn off heater, remove vacuum hose from wand he

31、ad and place into the clean tank. Operate the vacuum motor until the clean tank and vacuum hose are drained. Wipe the clean tank dry. f) Empty the waste tank and wipe dry. g) Reconnect wand head and run the machine for5min with the wand head resting on a surface so that entry airflow is not restrict

32、ed. Operate the solution valve trigger and drain any remaining fluid into a suitable container. This is necessary to dry out the cleaning agent tube and will help to dry out the tanks. A.2 Before re-use The following steps should be carried out. a) Fill the clean tank with water and cleaning agent i

33、n accordance with manufacturers instructions. b) Switch on heater and allow to reach working temperature which should be at least70 C. c) Immerse the cleaning head in the waste tank or suitable receptacle and operate cleaning agent pump for3min at70 C or1min at80 C to disinfect the head and cleaning
