It comprises a specification for ethanol to meet the requirements of a wide range of industrial users. It does not, however, apply to material in

First published in 1933, and last revised in 1966, the standard has again been revised, primarily to take account of metrication. In particular, the strength of the material is now expressed as a percentage by volume instead o

However, it also differs from the previous edition in that the requirement for residue on evaporation has been altered from 0.01 % to 0.005 % and new requirements have been introduced in respect of permanganate time and methanol content. The test methods associated with
10、the specifications are not included. Instead, reference is made to BS 6392, a new British Standard which implements ISO 1388, a comprehensive series of tests for commercial grades of ethanol prepared, with the active participation of the United Kingdom, by Technical Committee 47 “Chemistry” of the I

For many purposes, for example in various analytical procedures, industrial methylated spirits complying with BS 3591 may be used as an alternative to ethanol. In such cases, it is not permissible to use duty-free ethanol, received under the provi

15、e. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Description The material shall be clear and free from matter in suspension, as assessed by visual inspection, and shall consist, apart from water, essentially of ethanol, C 2 H 5 OH. 3 Sampling
16、and size of sample 1) A representative sample of the material measuring not less than 2500 mL shall be taken from the bulk for the purpose of examination in accordance with this standard. The sample shall be placed in a clean, dry and air-tight, ground glass-stoppered bottle, or screw-capped bottle
17、fitted with a polyethylene cone insert, of such capacity that it is almost filled by the sample. When it is necessary to seal the container, care shall be taken to avoid the risk of contaminating the contents in any way. NOTESufficient ullage should be left in the bottle to avoid excessive pressure
18、changes that could arise from temperature variations during storage and handling. About 10 % ullage is recommended. 4 Colour The colour of the material shall not exceed 15 Hazen units when measured by the method described in BS 5339. 5 Strength The strength of the material, expressed as a percentage
19、 by volume of ethanol, shall be not lower than 94.7 % (V/V) at 20 C 2) . The actual strength shall be specified as a percentage by volume of ethanol. NOTEThe strength may be determined by means of a glass alcohol hydrometer of the type specified in BS 5470 and the appropriate tables, or by means of
20、a density bottle (pyknometer) 3) . For the relationship between density in vacuo, density in air and ethanol content see Appendix A. 6 Residue on evaporation The residue on evaporation of the material shall not exceed 0.005 % (m/m) when determined by the method described in BS 4524. 7 Miscibility wi
21、th water The material shall not show opalescence when diluted 1 + 19 by volume with water complying with the requirements of BS 3978, and tested by the method described in BS 6392-5. 8 Alkalinity or acidity The material shall not be alkaline to phenolphthalein and any acidity, calculated as acetic a
22、cid (CH 3COOH), shall not exceed 0.005 % (m/m) when determined by the method described in BS 6392-1. 9 Carbonyl compounds content The carbonyl compounds content of the material, calculated as acetaldehyde (CH 3 CHO), shall not exceed 0.10 % (m/m) when determined by the method described in BS 6392-3.
