Scope1.1 This guide provides recommendations for home laun-dering of clothing that is flame, thermal, and arc resista

3、nt.1.1.1 This guide does not apply to dry cleaning of flame,thermal, and arc resistant clothing. For more information ondry cleaning, follow label instructions or contact your garmentsupplier or fabric manufacturer.1.1.2 This guide does not apply to industrial laundering offlame, thermal, and arc re

For more informa-tion on industrial laundering, follow Guide F 1449 or contactyour garment supplier.1.2 When garments are laundered properly, using the properdetergent, home laundering is an effective cleaning process.1.3 It is important that potentially flammable contaminantsare r

5、emoved from garments during the wash process. Ifflammable contaminants are not removed, the flame resistanceof the garment may be compromised.1.3.1 To reduce the potential of employees wearing gar-ments contaminated with flammable substances, the end usershould analyze the soil conditions to which a

6、 worker may beexposed, along with the effectiveness of the wash procedure. Inthe event home laundering is deemed ineffective, alternativesolutions should be pursued (dry cleaning, industrial launder-ing, disposable FR coveralls, etc.).1.4 Certain laundry chemicals that may have an adverseeffect on f

7、abric flame resistance are identified in this guide andshould not be used.1.5 This guide does not apply to specialized protectivegarments such as specialized firefighter turnout gear andproximity firefighter ensembles.1.6 This guide also provides recommendations for inspec-tion criteria that are sig

8、nificant to the performance of flame,thermal, and arc resistant clothing.2. 15、ificance and Use5.1 This guide is intended for use by employees of the enduser, such as safety personnel or program administrators, whohave chosen to implement a home laundered flame, thermal orarc resistant clothing program.5.2 This guide describes the key components involved in thehome care and ma

16、intenance of flame, thermal, and arc resistantclothing. The decision to home launder flame, thermal and arcresistant clothing is part of an overall hazard analysis. It shouldinclude the nature of the hazard, the soils and any chemicalspresent in the workplace. Requirements may exist that requirework

17、 apparel to be cleaned professionally due to the risk ofcontamination of the home or waste water caused by thewearers on the job exposure.5.3 The guide provides the end user assistance to developlaundering methods that will clean the garment and maintainthe flame, thermal, and arc resistant characte

18、ristics of theclothing during its useful service life. The guide also providessuggestions for increasing the wear life, appearance andfunction of the clothing.5.4 The guide also provides suggestions as to when flame,thermal, and arc resistant garments should be removed fromservice.6. Procedure6.1 Ga

19、rment manufacturers, in consultation with fiber andfabric suppliers, are responsible for providing information onthe performance characteristics and maintenance needs of theirgarments. The end-user is responsible for understanding thehazards present in the workplace and selecting appropriateengineer

20、ing controls and protective equipment and garments toaddress those hazards and communicating home launderinginstructions to the wearer.6.1.1 If questions remain about care and maintenance offlame, thermal and arc resistant clothing, contact the garmentmanufacturer or garment supplier for specific ca

21、re instructionsfor the fabrics or garments.6.2 Below are recommendations to provide optimal care andmaintenance of flame, thermal, and arc resistant properties.6.2.1 Always follow the care label.6.2.2 Use household laundry detergents. Do not use fatty-based or bar soaps. Liquid detergents are recomm

22、ended.6.2.2.1 Review garment care labels or contact garmentmanufacturers for a list of detergents acceptable for use withtheir flame, thermal, and arc resistant clothing.6.2.3 Do not use chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide, starch,fabric softeners, or detergents or pretreatment products withchlorine

23、bleach, hydrogen peroxide or derivatives of chlorinebleach or hydrogen peroxide.NOTE 1If there are questions about whether a cleaning productcontains these chemicals, refer to the products ingredients or contact themanufacturer.6.2.4 Loosely add clothing to the washing machine. Do notoverload the ma

24、chine. Follow the washing machine manufac-turers instructions for acceptable wash load sizes.6.2.5 Select a machine cycle that is appropriate for the soillevel and type of clothing being handled and use the hottestwater allowed by the clothing care label.6.2.6 Use soft water or detergent specificall

25、y designed forhard water. Hard water (greater than 7 grains per gallon ofhardness) can leave residue on fabrics that may mask flameresistance.6.2.7 Clothing soiled with combustible or flammable chemi-cals should be handled carefully and in accordance withpre-established procedures established by the

26、 end user, asstated in 5.1. In addition, failure to fully remove thesechemicals could compromise the flame resistant effectivenessof the garment.NOTE 2Garments soiled with hazardous chemicals should only behandled by qualified individuals with techniques approved for suchmaterials.6.2.8 A proper car

27、e label could encompass that protectiveapparel could be designed not to be laundered, or dry cleaned,or is distinctly of a limited use, or one of disposable nature.Garments of this nature shall not be laundered or reused, inaccordance with their label.6.3 Listed below are recommendations for increas

28、ing thewear life, appearance and comfort of the clothing.6.3.1 It is recommended to launder FR and non-flameresistant garments separately.NOTE 3Laundering FR and NFR garments together may result inappearance degradation and/or lint transfer for some FR fabrics, althoughis it unlikely to result in re

29、duced flame resistance.6.3.2 Pre-treat stains and heavy soil lines on collars andcuffs. Rub with full-strength, heavy-duty liquid detergent oroff-the-shelf pretreatment products following the productsrecommendations for use.6.3.3 Wash in the water temperature recommended by thelabel.6.3.4 Turn garme

30、nts inside out when laundering.6.3.5 Tumble dry on hottest setting allowed by the clothingcare label. Do not over dry. Remove from dryer immediatelywhen dry. Some garment labels indicate better drying perfor-mance when using the permanent-press or easy-care sensor-drysettings, instead of a time-to-d

31、ry setting because sensor-drysettings will avoid over-drying. Line drying is also acceptable.6.3.6 If desired, steam or dry iron with heat settings accord-ing to the care label instructions.6.3.7 Use regular detergent with top-loading washers andhigh efficiency detergents with front-loading washers.

32、6.4 Removal from Service For most practical purposes,garments may be temporarily or permanently removed fromservice for reasons as determined by inspection based onsubjective evaluation. Ultimately, determination of whenflame, thermal and arc resistant clothing should be removedfrom service is the r

33、esponsibility of the end user.6.4.1 The following items, identifiable by visual examina-tion, may diminish the effectiveness of the flame, thermal, andarc resistant clothing. Other issues may also have such effects.F27570926.4.1.1 Worn OutThin spots, holes, excessive wear orabrasion for example on e

34、lbow or knee area.6.4.1.2 Mechanical DamageEvidence of cuts, rips, tears,open seams, and nonfunctional closures.6.4.1.3 ModificationsAlteration(s) to a garment that dif-fers significantly from the original design.6.4.1.4 FitThe flame, thermal, and arc resistant clothingno longer fits the wearer.6.4.

35、1.5 Flammable SubstancesGarments soiled by sub-stances that represent a flammability risk, such as solvents,solids, oils, and other petroleum products that cannot beproperly removed by cleaning.NOTE 4The presence of a petroleum or chemical odor can beevidence of a flammable substance.6.4.2 If garmen

36、ts are removed from service for a year orlonger, contact the garment manufacturer for storage and usageinstructions.6.5 RepairsRepairs of flame, thermal and arc resistantclothing should be made using fabrics and components that areequivalent to those used in the original manufacturing to avoidreduci

37、ng the performance properties of the flame resistantgarment. Properly repaired garments may be returned toservice in a FR clothing program.NOTE 5Hemming pants or attaching patches may be performed usingnon-FR thread for convenience.6.6 ModificationsModifications to flame, thermal, and arcresistant c

38、lothing shall be modified using fabrics and compo-nents that are equivalent to those used in manufacturing.Modified garments that differ significantly from original designor function should not be worn.NOTE 6Modifications, such as making long sleeve shirts into shortsleeve shirts or cutting hoods of

39、f sweatshirts, can have a significant impacton the protective characteristics of the garment. Wearers should verify thatmodified garments continue to meet the end users protective require-ments.6.7 Permanent removal from serviceGarments that haveun-repairable damage, are worn out, or are unusable fo
