Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specification covers a thermoplastic insulationwhich consists substantially of
3、polyethylene.1.2 This type of insulation is considered suitable for con-tinuous operation for conductor temperatures up to 75C witha maximum conductor size of 1000 kcmil (507 mm2). Themaximum voltage rating shall not exceed 35 000 V for powerapplication or 9 000 V for series lighting.1.3 In many ins
4、tances the insulation material cannot betested unless it has been formed around a conductor or cable.Therefore, tests done on insulated wire or cable in thisdocument are solely to determine the relevant property of theinsulation material and not to test the insulated conductor orcompleted cable.1.4

Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 Refer to Terminology D 1711 for definitions pertinentto this specification.3.2 Definition of Term Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 aging, nexposure of materials to air at 100C for 48h.4. Co
8、nductor Shields4.1 Use conductor shields on solid and stranded conductorsof power cables having rated circuit voltages above 2000 V.This requirement does not apply to series lighting cables.Conductor shielding is conducting material at least 0.0025 in.(0.06 mm) thick applied over the surface of the
9、conductor. Itmay be conducting nonmetallic tape, conducting compound, orconducting cement.5. Physical Properties5.1 The polyethylene, before application to the conductor,shall comply with the requirements of Specification D 1248 forType I; Class A, B or C; Category 4 or 5; Grade E4 or E5. Therequire
10、ments of Specification D 1248 do not apply to theinsulation removed from the conductor.5.2 Insulation exposed to sunlight or weather requiresSpecification D 1248, Class C compound or suitable protectivecoverings. Class C compound shall meet the minimum absorp-tion coefficient requirement in Table 1.
11、5.3 Specimens removed from the wire or cable and tested at20 to 30C (68 to 80F) shall conform to the requirements forphysical properties specified in Table 1. The insulation may beair-oven aged without removal from the conductor.5.4 Thickness of InsulationThe minimum average insula-tion thickness sh
12、all be as specified in Table 2 or Table 3 of thisspecification. The minimum thickness shall be at least 90 % ofthe specified minimum average thickness.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D09 onElectrical and Electronic Insulating Materials and is the direct responsibility

15、es.5.5 Absorption CoeffcientTest according to Test MethodD 3349. A certification by the manufacturer of the polyethylenecompound that the requirement has been complied with maysuffice.6. Electrical Requirements6.1 Order of TestingPerform the partial discharge, acvoltage, insulation resistance, and d
16、c voltage tests in that orderwhen any of these tests are specified. The sequence of othertesting is not specified.6.2 Partial DischargeWhen tested in accordance withICEA T-24-380, as modified in Test Methods D 2633, eachlength of completed shielded power cable rated for service at2001 V and above sh
17、all comply with the minimum partialdischarge extinction level. See Test Methods D 2633.6.3 AC Voltage TestThe insulated conductor shall with-stand the ac voltage specified in Table 2 or Table 3 for 5 min.Unless otherwise specified, this test may be omitted fornonshielded conductors rated up to 5000
18、V if the dc voltagetest described in 6.6 is to be performed.6.4 Insulation ResistanceThe insulated conductor shallhave an insulation-resistance value equal to or greater than thatcorresponding to a constant of 50 000 MV-1000 ft at 60F(15.6C). When the temperature of the water in which theinsulation
19、is tested differs from 60F, a correction factor mustbe applied. Table 1 of Test Methods D 2633 contains thecorrection factors. Each insulation manufacturer can furnishthe 1F coefficient for their insulation material by using theprocedure given in Test Methods D 2633. Multiply the mea-sured value by
20、the correction factor to obtain the insulationresistance value corrected to 60F.6.5 DC Voltage Test (Cables Rated at 5001 V and Above)Upon completion of the insulation resistance test, each lengthof insulated power cable rated for service at 5001 V and overshall withstand for 15 min the dc test volt
21、age given in Table 2or Table 3.6.6 DC Voltage Test (Cables Rated at 5000 V or Less)Upon completion of the insulation resistance test, each non-shielded conductor rated up to 5000 V shall withstand for 5min the dc test voltage given in Table 2 or Table 3. Unlessotherwise specified, this test may be o
22、mitted for nonshieldedconductors rated up to 5000 V if the ac voltage test describedin 6.3 has been performed.7.
