To find proof, you have only to leaf through a magazine or newspaper or count the radio or television commercials that you hear in one evening. Most people see and hear a mass of advertising messages every day. And people r
10、espond to the many devices that advertisers use to gain their attention. Advertising is a big business, and, to many people, a fascinating one, filled with attraction and excitement. It is part literature, part art, and part show business. Advertising is the difficult business of bringing informatio
11、n to great numbers of people. The purpose of an advertisement is to make people respond into make them react to an idea, (8) . At the beginning of the 20th century, advertising was described as “salesmanship in print“. If this definition were expanded to include radio and television, it would still
12、stand today. (9) It can be found as far back as the public criers of ancient Greece- who, for a fee, shouted out messages about a companys products to one and all. (10) This early ad was the work of William Caxton, Englands first printer, who used it to advertise religious books from his own studio.
13、 Caxton posted small printed notices along Londons main streets. This same sort of simple, informational advertising is still used. (11) . The Industrial Revolution, in the 18th and 19th centuries, brought a new kind of advertising. Large factories took the place of small workshops, and goods were p
14、roduced in large quantities. Manufacturers used the newly built railroads to distribute their products over wide areas. They had to find many thousands of customers in order to stay in business. They could not simply tell people where shoes or cloth or tea could be bought-they had to learn how to ma
15、ke people want to buy a specific product. Advertising agencies began to develop in the United States just after the Civil War. (12) But they soon added the service of writing and producing advertisements. From these modest beginnings, advertising has developed into a highly specialized and profitabl

19、ung consumers often have not established their credit ratings. Many do not have steady incomes. They might have difficulty borrowing money from an agency in business to make loan. Parents or relatives are usually their best source of loans. Of course, the parents or relatives would have money availa
20、ble and be willing to lend it. You might even get an interest-free loan. For most consumers the cheapest place to borrow is at the commercial bank. Banks are a good source of installment loan which may run for 12 months up to 30. Most of banks also make single-payment loans to consumers for short pe
21、riods-30, 60, or 90 days. The newest type of bank loan is one that a depositor can get simply by writing a check. It works like this. A depositor is given a limited amount of credit, usually between $ 500 and $1, 000. He or she may write checks up to the amount allowed. Once a check has been written
22、, the amount of the check becomes a loan. Usually no charge is made for interest until the loan is made. A typical interest rate is 3 cents per $100 per day, or just under 1% a month. Suppose that you used $100 of your credit and repaid it in 30 days. The cost would be 90 cents. If you repaid it in
23、10 days, the cost would be only 30 cents. There is another source of consumer loans that may be even cheaper than a bank. It is a credit union. But you have to be a member to borrow from one. A credit union is a cooperative. You remember that a cooperative is a business organized to provide its owne
24、rs, or members, with goods or services at a saving. Like a bank, a credit union is both a savings and a lending organization. Its members deposit their savings in the credit union and are paid interest in return. These savings are used to make loans to members at low rates. Members of a credit union
