14、 BS633 supersedes the1950 edition. In order to familiarize the reader with the use of the metric system of weights and measures, metric conversions are given for information, including the Tex system of yarn count (seeBS947, “Yarn count systems and their conversions”). The method of determination of

15、 the conductivity of the aqueous extract of scoured tapes has been revised. NOTE 1Where metric equivalents are stated in brackets, the figures in imperial units should be regarded as the standard. The metric units are approximate. For more accurate conversions reference should be made to BS350, “Con

18、1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements and dimensions for the following classes of unbleached cotton tape and webbing with selvedges: Extra fine insulating tape Fine insulating tape Ordinary (or dynamo) tape Webbing Heavy webbing The tape may be either scoured or unscoured. Appropria

19、te requirements are given for each variety. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply: NOTEIn some places the term “tape” is used in a general sense which includes webbing. 2.1 count of yarn a number indicating the mass per unit length or the length per

20、unit mass of a yarn NOTEVarious count systems are in use, using different units of mass and length (seeBS947, “Yarn count systems and their conversions”). the count of a yarn on the cotton system is the number of hanks, each of840yards, per pound the count of a yarn on the tex system is the weight i

21、n grammes per kilometre of yarn there is then a reciprocal relation between cotton count and tex, given by the relation: 2.2 end an individual warp thread 2.3 loom state refers to material as it comes from the loom, without any further processing 2.4 pick an individual weft thread 2.5 plain weave th

22、e simplest form of thread interlacing in which adjacent warp threads pass, respectively, over and under the same weft thread, and under and over the next weft thread 2.6 scouring treatment of textile materials in aqueous or other solutions in order to remove natural fats, waxes, proteins and other c

23、onstituents as well as dirt, oil and other impurities 2.7 selvedge longitudinal edge of a fabric formed during weaving, with the weft not only turning at the edges but also passing continuously across the width of the fabric from edge to edge 2.8 singe to remove protruding fibres by burning in a fla

24、me 2.9 single yarn a yarn not twisted with another yarn 2.10 two-fold yarn two yarns twisted together 2.11 2/2 twill a weave in which each warp thread passes over two successive weft threads, under the next two weft threads, over the next two, and so on. The weft threads are paired differently for n

25、eighbouring warp threads, to produce a diagonal line on the fabric surface in V and W twills the direction of this diagonal pattern is alternately R to L and L to R, in herringbone fashion, and the letter denotes the number of alternations within the fabric width 2.12 warp or ends threads lengthways

26、 in a fabric as woven 2.13 weave the pattern of interlacing of warp and weft in a woven fabric 2.14 weft or picks threads widthways in a fabric as woven tex 590.5 cotton count - =BS633:1970 2 BSI 12-1999 3 General 3.1 General requirements. Tape of every class shall be made of good quality cotton and

27、 woven from unsized two-fold warp yarn and shall be free from additives. The tape shall be woven with selvedges which shall be uniform. 3.2 Winding on cores. Tape of every class shall be wound on a hard core of sufficient strength to withstand the pressure of the tape when wound sufficiently tightly

28、 on it to withstand normal handling. The width of the core shall not exceed the width of the tape. NOTEWhen the maximum diameter of a roll is of importance, this should be specified by the purchaser. 3.3 Joins. Every roll of tape shall be as free from joins as practicable. The number of joins permit

29、ted shall be the subject of agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer. Where a join is necessary the ends shall be overlapped, and shall be neatly sewn with cotton thread, the whole width of the tape. Pins or staples shall not be used for fastening the ends of a roll or for joining tape.

30、4 Weave 4.1 Extra fine, fine and ordinary (or dynmno) insulating tape. The weave of extra fine, fine andordinary tape shall be plain. The tape shall becalendered and, if so specified, shall be scoured and/or singed. No detergents shall be used in the scouring process. 4.1.1 The adequacy of singeing

31、shall be determined by visually inspecting the tapes for freedom from protruding fibres. 4.1.2 If specified, a coloured warp thread shall be woven into the tape. The colour and the position of the thread shall be the subject of agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer. 4.2 Webbing. The w

32、eave of the webbing shall be2/2W twill. The webbing shall be in the loom state, unless otherwise specified. 4.3 Heavy webbing. The weave of the heavy webbing shall be a2/2V twill. The heavy webbing shall be in the loom state, unless otherwise specified. 5 Width The nominal widths of tape and webbing

33、 shall be as shown inTable 1. When determined as described inAppendix B, the actual width shall not differ from the nominal width by more than the appropriate tolerance given inTable 1. The yarn of which extra fine insulating tape is made shall consist of

36、Egyptian cotton or cotton of equivalent quality. It will be found that in order to meet the requirements of Clauses9 and10, all warp should be folded yarns not coarser than two-fold100s (R11.8tex/2 1) ) and the weft should be not coarser than two-fold140s (R8.4tex/2). 6.2 Fine insulating tape. The y

37、arn of which fine insulating tape is made shall consist of Egyptian cotton or cotton of equivalent quality and shall be not coarser than two fold60s (R19.7tex/2) for the warp and single32s for the weft (18.5tex). 6.3 Ordinary (or dynamo) tape. The yarn of which ordinary (or dynamo) tape is made shal

38、l consist of American cotton or cotton of equivalent quality, and shall be not coarser than two-fold28s (R42.2tex/2) for the warp and single26s for the weft (22.7tex). 6.4 Webbing. The yarn of which webbing is made shall consist of American cotton or cotton of equivalent quality and shall be not coa

39、rser than two-fold28s (R42.2tex/2) for the warp and single20s for the weft (29.5tex). 6.5 Heavy webbing. The yarn of which heavy webbing is made shall consist of American cotton or cotton of equivalent quality, and shall be not coarser than two-fold20s (R59tex/2) for the warp and two-fold28s for the

40、 weft (R42.4tex/2). 7 Warp threads The total number of warp threads in the tape shall be not less than the appropriate value given inTable 2. Preferred thicknesses are those shown in Column2 ofTable 4. For any specified or declared thickness, the mean thicknesses over the selvedges and betwe

44、en selvedges, when determined as described inAppendix C, shall not differ from the specified or declared thickness by more than the appropriate tolerance given in Column4 ofTable 4. 9.2 Webbing.
