Influenza is sometimes called “flu“ or a “bad cold“

22、. He took samples from the throats of patients and in his hospital was able to find the virus of this influenza. There are three main types of the influenza virus. The most important of these are type A and B, each of them having several subgroups. With the instruments at the hospital the doctor rec

23、ognized that the outbreak was due to a virus in group A, but he did not know the subgroup. Then he reported the outbreak to the World Health Organization in Geneva. WHO published the important news alongside reports of a similar outbreak in Hong Kong, where about 15%-20% the population became ill. A

24、s soon as the London doctors received the package of throat samples, doctors began the standard tests. They found that by reproducing itself with very high speed, the virus had grown more than a million times within two days. Continuing their careful tests, the doctors checked the effect of drugs ag

25、ainst all the known subgroups of virus type A. None of them gave any protection. This, then, was something new, a new influenza virus, against which the people of the world had no help whatever. Having found the virus they were working with, the two doctors now dropped it into the noses of some spec

26、ially selected animals, which get influenza much as human beings do. In a short time, the usual signs of the disease appeared. These experiments proved that the new virus was easy to catch, but that it was not a killer. Scientists, like the general public, call it simply Asian flu. The first discove

27、ry of the virus, however, was made in China before the disease had appeared in other countries. Various report showed that the influenza outbreak started in China, probably in February of 1957. By the middle of March it had spread all over China. The virus was found by Chinese doctors early in March

28、. But China is not a member of the World Health Organization and therefore does not report outbreaks of disease to it. Not until two months later, when travellers, carried the virus into Hong Kong, from where it spread to Singapore, did the news of the outbreak reach the rest of the world. By this t

Children are sent away to school, sent away to work, sent away to summer camp, and given money and sent away to places of recreation. Thrust out of the family nucleus, circling in orbit at a distance, as it were, millions o

37、f children naturally come to feelif only subconsciouslyneglected, unwanted, and unloved, surrounded by a hostile world of grown-ups. Such a prevailing feeling among children may be one reason why there are so many street children. Typical is young Micha, who said: “No one wanted me anymore.“ A nine-

38、year-old boy similarly complained: “I would rather be our dog.“ Child neglect is a form of mistreatment and it can lead to more sinister forms of mistreatment such as the physical mistreatment and sexual abuse of children. Regardless of the form mistreatment takes, it sends children the message that

39、 they are unloved and unwanted. According to the German newspaper Die Welt, “more and more children are growing up to be social cripples.“ It adds: “Children lack the warmth of the nest. The emotional bonding between children and parents is becoming weaker, or it is never established in the first pl

Such children feel neglected, and their desire for security goes unfulfilled.“ Children who are denied their right to be wanted and loved may become bitter, taking out their frustrations on those who have neglected them or possibly on society as a whole.
