6、3:1995 ii BSI 07-1999 Foreword This British Standard has been prepared by Subcommittee MTE/15/9. It should be clearly understood that, although this type of axe has an insulating shaft, it is not intended as a piece of special equipment which will permit personnel to operate on electrical circuits;

7、it should instead be regarded as a tool that could give an added degree of safety in circumstances where a live circuit may be accidentally contacted. The fact that the shaft of the axe is insulating is not a guarantee that the user is safe from electric shock, and additional safeguards have to be o

8、bserved when work is carried out on electrical equipment, particularly in view of the fact that the tool may very often be used in wet conditions. For reasons of user safety an axe should be discarded if the grip outer surface is significantly degraded such that it does not give a secure grip especi

9、ally when it is wet or held in wet gloves. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations

15、conform to those specified inFigure 1. 4 Materials 4.1 Heads The steel from which the axe heads are manufactured shall have the composition specified inTable 1. Table 1 Composition of axe heads The steel shall have a controlled grain size within the range5 ASTM to8 ASTM (see BS4490:1989). 4.2 Shafts

16、 Glass fibre reinforced plastics shafts shall be moulded in thermosetting type plastics containing a minimum of60% (m/m) glass fibre. Glass fibres shall be continuous, unidirectional and longitudinal. Shafts shall be fixed to the head by a chemical adhesive or other means so that they will not loose

17、n in the head during use. The shaft shall be fitted with either an integrally moulded handle, or a handgrip (seeFigure 1), which shall be securely fixed to the butt-end of the shaft. NOTE 1Suitable materials for handgrips and integrally moulded hand grips are vinyl polymers and polypropylene. NOTE 2

18、Grips should be resistant to commonly used chemicals and petroleum products. The profile of the shaft or handgrip shall be designed to provide a secure hand hold. When tested in accordance withA.4, the shaft shall withstand a proof load of10Nm. 5 Manufacture 5.1 Heads Heads shall be forged in one pi

19、ece from the solid. The eye shall be central in the width of the head. The cutting edge, the centre-line of the pick-end, and the shaft axis shall all be in one plane. 5.2 Eye The eye shall have a reverse taper running from top to bottom of the head, as shown inFigure 1. 5.3 Shaft The shaft shall be

20、 fitted through the eyehole to a depth which is either flush with, or not less than2mm below, the outer face. NOTEA cosmetic seal, of maximum thickness2mm, of opaque bond flush with the head may be used to fill any recess where the shaft end does not reach the outer face of the head. 6 Heat treatmen

21、t and hardness 6.1 Head All heads shall be in the normalized condition prior to hardening. After normalizing, the head shall be hardened on the cutting edge and pick-end to achieve a fully martensitic structure and then tempered to give a hardness not less than48 HRC and not more than56 HRC. The har

22、dened zone at the cutting edge and pick-end shall extend to a minimum distance of20mm, at which it shall be not less than35 HRC, and to a maximum distance of40mm, at which it shall be not more than35 HRC. Figure 1 Firefighters axeBS7833:1995 BSI 07-1999 3 6.2 Eye The eye hardness shall not exceed28 HRC. 6.3 Testing Hardness tests shall be carried out in one of the following ways: a) in accordance with

24、BS891:1989, using a machine that has been verified in accordance with BS891:1989; b) using an alternative method in conjunction with tables for comparison of hardness scales given in BS860. 6.4 Crack test When tested using magnetic particle flaw detection methods in accordance with BS6072:1981, axes

25、 shall be free from deleterious defects. The current values used shall be those specified inTable2of BS6072:1981 for general engineering applications. 7 Mass The mass of the finished axe shall be not less than850g and not more than950g. 8 Finish 8.1 All the axe heads shall be free from burrs and del

26、eterious defects. They shall be polished all over and treated with clear lacquer or powder coated and part polished or have applied such other finish as may be agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer provided that they meet the requirements of the cross-hatch test in ASTM B571: Vol02.05.19

27、91 clause13. 8.2 Where powder coating is used, the coating thickness shall be204mmin. 9 Tests 9.1 Axe head When tested in accordance withA.1.1 the cutting edge shall suffer no damage and the shaft shall still be securely fixed in the head. 9.2 Pick-end When tested in accordance withA.1.2 the point o

28、f the pick end shall not be damaged nor shall the shaft be loose in the head in any way. 9.3 Shaft 9.3.1 When tested in accordance withA.2 the shaft shall not pull apart or loosen after release of the load from the head. 9.3.2 When tested in accordance withA.3 the shaft shall show no visible defect

29、after release of the load from the head. 9.4 Grip When tested in accordance withA.4 the grip shall remain firmly bonded to the shaft. NOTEAn axe should be discarded if the grips outer surface is significantly degraded such that it does not give a secure grip especially when it is wet or held in wet

30、gloves. 9.5 Dielectric When tested in accordance withA.5 the leakage current shall be smaller than1mA for200mm of exposed shaft. This corresponds to a maximum value of the leakage current of l=5L No electrical puncture, sparkover or flash-over shall occur during the test period, and the limits of le

31、akage current shall not be exceeded. 10 Marking 10.1 Head The following information shall be clearly and indelibly marked along the side of each head: a) the manufacturers name or trade mark; b) a mark to identify the relevant batch; c) the number of this British Standard. 1) 10.2 Shaft The followin

34、he manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the claimants responsibility. 35、Tests A.1 Soundness and assembly test A.1.1 Lay a bar of6mm diameter, made from a free cutting steel in the as-rolled condition, conforming to2 C22 from BS EN100831:1991, on a solid foundation. Strike the bar by a single heavy blow of the axe. A.1.2 Place a steel block of composition conforming to s

36、teel2 C22 from BS EN100831:1991 on an anvil. Deliver a series of heavy blows manually to the steel block, striking with the pick-end of the axe. A.2 Pull apart test Hold the head and shaft securely in a standard tensile testing machine. Subject the head and shaft to a force of9 800N. Hold the specif

37、ied load for not less than5s prior to release. A.3 Bend test Hold the head firmly in an upright position in a holding fixture with the axis of the shaft parallel to the platen of a vertical hydraulic press. At a point on the shaft250mm from the head, apply a load of1350N vertically to the shaft. Sta

38、rt the load at zero and increase it at a gradual rate. Hold the specified load for not less than10s prior to release. A.4 Grip adhesion test Fix the shaft grips. Apply the appropriate cure for any adhesive used and subject the handle grips to a torque load of10 Nm. A.5 Insulation dielectric test A.5

39、.1 Conditioning Condition the tools by immersing them totally in a bath of tap water at room temperature(23 C 5 C) for24h 0.5h. After this conditioning, wipe the tools dry and test them in accordance with the dielectric testA.5.2. A.5.2 Dielectric test Immerse the tool with its insulated part in a b

40、ath of tap water up to a level of24mm 2mm from the nearest non-insulated part. The conductive part is to be above the water level. Apply a voltage of20kV r.m.s. at50Hz or60Hz continuously for3min in accordance with the procedure in BS923-1, and measure the leakage current. A.5.3 Rejected axes Disman
