5、68-1:2010, MOD)These are supplemented, for the United States and Canada with the following requirements. Unlessotherwise specified, paragraph references are to 60950-1 with correlating references in parenthesis to62368-1.1.1.2 (4.1.5) hand-held laser pointers powered by batteries and normally used i

6、n home, office, andcommercial environments4.3.8 Batteries (Annex M, additional requirement)Safety requirements of Annex I of UL 60065 are applicable to the user accessible coin / button cell batterycompartment.4.3.13.5.1 and NAE Lasers (including laser diodes) (10.3.1.2)The laser class emitted by th

7、e laser pointer device shall not exceed Class II (US CFR Title 21, ChapterI, Subchapter J, Part 1040) or Class 2 (IEC 60825-1).Note: The class designation (II or 2) used is dependent on the manufacturers choice.To determine the laser class emitted, the laser testing and laser classification calculat

8、ions are asprescribed in the aforementioned applicable laser safety standard. 9、f the device to US CFR Title 21, Chapter I, Subchapter J, Part 1040 is typically withoutconsideration of single fault conditions.The laser class determination shall consider the additive effects of multiple wavelengths if more than onewavelength is emitted from the device.The following Caution state

10、ments shall be provided in the user information / manual: CAUTION: Do not aim the laser pointer at aircraft or into another persons eyes. CAUTION: This laser pointer is not a toy and should not be used by children.RATIONALE FOR DECISION:The basic safety requirements for class III devices are specifi

11、ed in the referenced safety standards(60950-1 or 62368-1). They each address laser safety but do not fully anticipate application to laserpointers. These certification requirement decisions supplement the basic requirements of the standards.Note that the Canadian laser product safety regulation is t

12、he Radiation Emitting Devices Act, ChapterR-1:2001, (RED) issued by Department of Justice Canada. RED cites both the US 21 CFR and IEC 60825requirements as applicable in Canada for the purpose of radiation protection to persons. Local (provincial)regulations may cite additional requirements. The las

13、er pointer requirements for Canada, as for the US,are those accepted at the national level.The laser pointer devices are limited to maximum Class II or 2 levels of radiation emitted for the followingreasons. Laser Pointers emit a collimated laser beam with optical powers that can approach hazardousl

14、evels of radiation during viewing and/or exposure to the skin. Other possible hazards for higher powered lasers could also include risk of igniting flammablematerials. A laser pointers collimated beam typically means that the laser power (and potential hazard)at great distances from the device are t

15、he same or similar to the laser power (and potentialhazard) at the device. Also, laser pointers can be marketed to, and operated by, a large pool of users ranging fromchildren to business professionals with all levels of maturity and laser safety knowledge.If the test results indicate that additiona

16、l (to laser) wavelengths are emitted, those other wavelengths shalladditionally be considered when determining the laser class, as described in the applicable laser safetystandard. The rationale is that some laser pointers emit wavelengths that may in part be created byinternal infrared lasers / wav

17、elengths. These infrared wavelengths shall be contained unless they are notfound to be emitted in a hazardous amount.The US Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 21, Chapter I, Subchapter J, Part 1040 allows for themanufacturer to determine the laser class without consideration of single faults. H

18、owever, it is requiredthat the devices shall additionally be investigated for single-fault conditions in accordance with the generalrequirements for other hazards addressed by 60950-1 (62368-1), as well as the IEC 60825-1 laser safetyStandard.STANDARD NUMBER: UL 60950-1 -2-UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NO

19、T AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM ULTo address concerns of potential misuse of laser pointers, additional caution statements shall be providedto caution the user against 1) aiming the devices at aircraft, 2) aiming the devices directly toward apersons eyes,

20、 and 3) allowing children to use them.Lastly, an increase in the number of ingestion incidents involving small children and lithium batteries inthe “coin/button” configuration has been observed by the National Capital Poison Center (NCPC). Theseincidents have led to injury and death due to the gener

21、ation of hydroxide when the battery is in contactwith saliva, causing perforations of the esophagus. In an effort to mitigate these hazards, any laserpointers containing coin / button cell batteries shall require the use of a tool or a minimum of twosimultaneous actions to open the battery cover. Th

22、ese requirements are in Annex I of UL 60065.Rationale Addendum (for UL use)In order to facilitate the US and Canadian laser testing and classification, the following certificationprocess criteria shall be followed:1. Samples Minimum one sample (two preferred) shall be obtained. Two samples would hel

23、pprevent potential delays in testing, should there be any sample damage issues during faulttesting.2. Information Needed A specification sheet of the laser component employed in the laserpointer and schematics of the laser circuitry shall be obtained.3. Testing Location The CDRH / RED testing shall
