6、ermination of total ash content of leather 1 Scope This standard specifies a method for the determination of total ash content of leather. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. 8、NS 5616 (SABS SM 616), Preparation of samples (leather, elastomeric material and other footwear materials). 3 Principle The sample is carbonized and then weighed repeatedly in an open crucible. 4 Apparatus Ordinary laboratory apparatus and in particular: a) Crucibles or dishes that are of glazed por

9、celain, platinum or quartz. b) A muffle furnace that is capable of being maintained at a temperature of 600 C 20 C. c) Dessicator. 5 Preparation of test pieces Prepare the final sample as given in SANS 5616. 6 Procedure 6.1 Weigh out accurately 5 g of the final sample (see clause 5), into a tarred c

10、rucible and place in the furnace at room temperature. SANS 5621:2009 Edition 3 2 6.2 Raise the temperature to 600 C 20 C and maintain this temperature until all the carbon is burnt off. 6.3 Transfer the crucible to a dessicator, cool and weigh. 6.4 Repeat the heating, cooling and weighing until the

11、mass remains constant. 7 Calculation Calculate the total ash content as follows: mAm21= 100 where A is the total ash content, expressed as a percentage; m1is the mass of the test sample, in grams; and m2is the mass of the residue, in grams. To express the result on a 14 % leather moisture basis, mul

12、tiply this value by the factor 86100 cwhere c is the percentage moisture content as determined in ISO 4684.
