12、r use as hearing protectors. 1.2 Real-ear attenuation characteristics of the ear-muffs are measured in accordance with the subjective method specified in ISO 4869-1. Amdt 2 NOTE a) Ear-plugs are covered in SANS 1451-2. b) The standards referred to in this part of the specification are listed in appe
13、ndix A. c) Guidance on the verification of the quality of ear-muffs produced to this part of the specification is given in appendix B. 2 Definitions 2.1 For the purposes of this part of the specification the following definitions shall apply: attenuation the algebraic difference, in decibels, betwee
14、n the one-third octave band pressure level, as perceived by a real ear at threshold, in a specified sound field under specified conditions, with the hearing protector absent and with the hearing protector being worn decibel dB a ratio of sound pressures given by the formula 2110/log20ppdB = where p1
15、 = first sound pressure, Pa p2 = reference sound pressure = 20 Pa. SANS 1451-1:2008 Edition 1.2 4earcup shell a hollow, approximately hemispherical component that is mounted on a headband and to which a cushion and a liner are usually fitted ear-muff a hearing protector that circumaurally occludes t
16、he ears headband a band, usually of metal or plastics, designed to hold the ear-muffs securely over the ears by exerting a clamping force headstrap a flexible strap fitted to the earcups (or to the headband close to the earcups) of a pair of ear-muffs and that can be adjusted to support the ear-muff
17、s (usually behind-the-head types) by resting on the top of the head insertion loss the algebraic difference, in decibels, between the one-third octave band pressure level, measured by the microphone of an acoustic test fixture (see 6.8.1(a) in a specified sound field under specified conditions, with

19、 deformable cover, usually of foam plastics or liquid-filled, fitted to the rim of an earcup to improve the comfort and fit of ear-muffs 3 Requirements 3.1 Materials Materials of seals which may come into contact with the skin shall be non-staining, soft, pliable and not known to cause skin irritati
20、on or to have any adverse effect on health. 3.2 Design 3.2.1 All parts of a pair of ear-muffs shall be so designed and manufactured that they are not likely to cause any injury to the wearer when they are used as intended. 3.2.2 All parts that are in contact with plastics seals shall be rounded, fin
21、ished smooth and shall be free from sharp edges which could cause damage to the seals. 3.2.3 Where the seals are not intended to last the lifetime of the ear-muffs, the seals shall be replaceable without the use of any tools. 3.3 Dimensions 3.3.1 The longest dimension of the opening of an ear-muff w
22、ith the seals fitted (measured in the plane of the face of the earcup), shall be at least 50 mm, and the width of the opening (measured in the plane of the face of the earcup and at right angles to the longest dimension) shall be at least 35 mm. 23、formation of seals Any seal deformation which is present when the ear-muffs are unpacked shall disappear within 30 minutes. 3.4.2 Headband force When a pair of ear-muffs is tested in accordance with 6.3, using the relevant head size settings given in table 1, the headband force shall not exceed 16 N
24、. 3.4.3 Seal pressure When a pair of ear-muffs is tested in accordance with 6.4, using the relevant head size settings given in table 1, the seal pressure shall not exceed 4 kPa.
