When specified (see 6.2), a sample shall be subjectedto first article inspection in accordance with 4.2.3.2 Definitions or explanation of packaging terms . Definitions orexplanation of packaging terms applicable to this specification shal

34、l be asdefined in the applicable referenced specification (see 6.4).3.3 Materials . Packaging materials shall be as specified herein and inthe applicable referenced specifications.3.3.1 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials . Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable

35、materials should be used tothe maximum extent possible provided that the material meets or exceeds theoperational and maintenance requirements, and promotes economicallyadvantageous life cycle costs.3.3.2 New materials . The use of newly developed packaging materials orprocedures is encouraged and r

36、ecommended and will be permitted under theconditions specified herein, provided they are equal to or better than thespecified materials or procedures.3.3.2.1 Certification of new materials . Materials or procedures otherthan those specified herein shall equal or exceed the requirements specifiedhere

37、in. If, after a review of the material or procedure and the relateddocumented evidence, or the witnessing of the stipulated tests, it is theopinion of the contracting activity that the material or procedure meets orexceeds the requirements specified herein, authorization for use will begranted.3.3.3

38、 Asbestos .3.3.3 .1 Packaging material . Asbestos or material and items containingasbestos shall not be used in the packaging of material covered by thisspecification (see 6.5).3.3.3.2 Packaged items . Asbestos and separately packaged componentscontaining asbestos shall be packaged in sealed, dust,

39、and siftproof packages.Flexible packages shall be heat sealed.3.3.3.3 Dusting material . Talc or talcum, when used in the packagingprocess, for example, dusting of items, shall be asbestos-free.3.3.4 Cushioning and wrapping materials . The use of excelsior,newspaper, shredded paper (all types) and s

40、imilar hygroscopic or nonneutralmaterials, and all types of loose fill materials for applications such ascushioning, fill, stuffing, and dunnage is prohibited.3.4 Technical information . Complete descriptive packaging details ondrawings, test results, and packaging, and transportation data requireme

41、ntsare not required when such were previously approved by the contractingactivity.3.5 Levels of protection .3.5.1 Preservation . Cleaning, drying, preservatives, preservativeapplication criteria, and methods of preservation (unit protection) shall bein accordance with MIL-STD-2073-1C (military preservation), and as specifiedherein. Requirements in table I are

43、assigned by item; methods of unitprotection are assigned on the basis of the type of unit protection mostcommonly required for a specific component or item. The preservation activitymay provide any additional protection that is considered necessary with theprior approval of the contracting activity.
