Economy in

9、salt usage calls for spreaders which can uniformly spread as little as5g/m 2over wide carriageways, and modern conditions may require spreaders to operate at comparatively high speeds, between widely separated stockpiles. The detailed requirements for spreading grit or urea have been deleted from th

10、is standard but it is recognized that some organizations may wish to use these machines for spreading grit. In these cases the rate of spread for the type of material to be used has to be agreed between the purchaser and the supplier. Purchasers should be aware of the highly corrosive properties of

11、salt and the effect it has on steel surfaces and particularly electrical and control equipment. It is important that spreaders are properly maintained and are set to spread consistently the right amount of salt, to spread evenly (including whilst changing gear), to avoid the verges, and to minimize

12、the amount of salt “wash off” into drains and waterways. This specification includes a spreading test by practical trial. Salt samples are taken along and across the direction of travel and the results are combined in various ways so that aspects of performance are analysed and compared with a calcu

13、lated level of performance. Also included are two simpler means for checking the rate of discharge so that machines can be regularly tested. This should ensure consistent rates of application. A major factor in salt economy is the ease with which the driver can control spread rates. It is also impor

14、tant that the body of the spreader be designed for easy and rapid unloading to lessen any temptation to dump or run out whole or part loads of unused salt. To allow for the different requirements of various local authorities, machines are divided into five classes primarily based on initial cost, sp

15、eed of operation and width of coverage. It is hoped that by these means interest and knowledge will be disseminated and manufacturers will be encouraged to improve performance so that even higher levels of performance, resulting in still more economical and efficient operation, may be possible in th

16、e future. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. 18、12-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard applies to all types of spreader for distributing salt on roads, except manual spreaders. A classification is laid down and the essential requirements for construction and performance of each class are specified. A prototype performance test is included for ea

19、ch class, with provision for testing, issue of certificate and marking. It does not specify the construction material of the body nor does it include requirements for corrosion resistance. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definiti

20、ons For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definitions apply. 2.1 salt salt complying with the requirements of BS3247 NOTERock salt, only, is specified for test purposes. 2.2 spreader a machine or equipment used for distributing salt. There are many different types which may be bro

21、adly described in terms of a combination of two principal characteristics a) The method of attachment to the vehicle: mounted on the chassis or body of a vehicle, or as a trailer. b) The method of distribution: speed related, when distribution is automatically linked to the road speed; or non-speed

22、related, when distribution is manually set for a given road speed. 2.3 vehicle the vehicle on which the spreader is mounted or by which it is towed 2.4 permanently mounted spreader a spreader that is permanently mounted on a vehicle 2.5 semi-permanently mounted spreader a spreader that can be mounte

23、d and demounted from a vehicle body and fitted with controls located convenient to the driver NOTENormally it is mounted and demounted only at the beginning and end of the winter period. 2.6 demountable spreader a spreader that can be quickly mounted and demounted from a vehicle body and fitted with

24、 controls located convenient to the driver NOTENormally it is mounted and demounted throughout the winter period. 2.7 interchangeable spreader a spreader that can be interchanged in a matter of minutes with an alternative body and fitted with controls located convenient to the driver NOTENormally it

25、 is mounted and demounted throughout the winter period. 2.8 trailer/attachment spreader a spreader equipped with connections or other towing mechanisms designed to fit suitable commercial vehicles 2.9 axis the centreline of the spreader in the direction of travel 2.10 width of spread the width of ro

26、ad surface at right angles to the axis over which material is to be spread (see Figure 2). For testing and other purposes this comprises: a) the main zone; b) a margin at each side of the main zone. 2.11 spreading the process of distributing material over a road surface: symmetrical when the axis of

27、 the vehicle and the main zone coincide, asymmetrical when the left-hand side of the vehicle coincides with or is not more than300mm on either side of the left-hand edge of the main zone NOTEIt is permissible for spreading to be asymmetrical to the left when requested by the purchaser. 2.12 verge a

28、width of 2m outside each margin (seeFigure 2) 2.13 coverage the mass of material distributed over the surface, expressed in grams per square metre 2.14 nominal coverage the average coverage which is intended to be achieved over the width of spread with a particular setting of the appropriate control

30、lass of a particular spreader being the highest in which it is capable of meeting all the requirements of this standard. a) Class A1. Capable of a symmetrical and an asymmetrical width of spread of 11m at all speeds between 0km/h and 70km/h and having a speed related drive. b) Class A2. Capable of a

31、 symmetrical and an asymmetrical width of spread of 11m at all speeds between8km/h and70km/h and having a speed related drive. c) Class B. Capable of a symmetrical and an asymmetrical width of spread of 11m at all speeds between8km/h and70km/h, not speed related. d) Class C. Capable of both a symmet

32、rical and an asymmetrical width of spread of7m at a rated speed (see 2.15) between8km/h and50km/h, not speed related. e) Class D. Capable of spreading a symmetrical main zone not less than2m wide at a rated speed (see 2.15) between8km/h and50km/h, not speed related. NOTE 1Class A spreaders are recom

33、mended for all precautionary spreading. NOTE 2Class A1 spreads whenever the vehicle is in motion. 4 Coverage Class A1, A2 and B spreaders shall be capable of nominal coverages of salt over the widths of spread specified in clause3 of between5g/m 2and 40g/m 2in increments not exceeding5g/m 2and shall

34、 be appropriately marked at the control point. Class C and D spreaders shall be capable of nominal coverages of salt over the widths of spread specified in clause3 of between10g/m 2and40g/m 2in increments not exceeding10g/m 2and shall be appropriately marked at the control point. Where specified by

35、the purchaser the spreader shall be capable of being calibrated to compensate for the variable bulk density of the salt. NOTEWhere the spreader is required for grit or urea spreading the rate of spread for the type of material to be used should be agreed between the interested parties. 5 Constructio

36、n Attention is drawn to the relevant statutory regulations concerning spreaders. Materials and components shall comply with the relevant British Standards. NOTE 1There are no requirements specified in this standard for the following points which should be considered before a spreader is purchased. a

37、) The materials used for the construction of the body. b) The corrosion resistance of the body. c) The design and finish of the body to ensure free flow of salt to the discharge point. d) Access for maintenance and replacement of wearing parts. All non-towed gritters shall have a grid with a mesh si

38、ze of not more than 50mm centres square to prevent debris and lumps of salt getting into the body of the gritter. The hopper grid mesh shall be constructed so that the longitudinal elements of the mesh (i.e. those in line with the vehicle axis) are fitted above the transverse element. A fixed inspec

39、tion ladder and, where required by the purchaser, a platform shall be provided at the rear of the vehicles (defined in2.4 to 2.7), to enable the operator to view the inside of the hopper when cleaning down. Bearings, chains and other power-transmission components and assemblies, particularly electri

40、cally operated, shall be enclosed or otherwise protected against the entry of dirt, grit, salt and water. The machinery shall be guarded in accordance with BS5304. All movable controls and adjustments shall be indexed or clearly marked so that the purchaser can calibrate them for widths of spread an

41、d coverage. Controls for cutting off spreading shall be provided and these and other controls required to be operated while the vehicle is in motion shall be located within the cab for operation by the driver. NOTE 2It is desirable that an indication that the machine is spreading be provided in the

42、cab for the driver. If the spreading mechanism of a driven spreader would be subjected to severe wear and tear during road movement faster than the maximum operational speed, simple means shall be provided to enable the spreading mechanism to be disconnected. The rate of spread shall not be affected

43、 during the process of normal vehicle gear changing. NOTE 3The spread of the salt in relation to the wheels of the vehicle should be agreed between the interested parties.BS1622:1989 BSI 12-1999 3 6 Type test and issue of certificate A spreader of each new type or design shall be tested in accordanc

44、e with Appendix A and shall achieve a performance as follows. a) Accuracy of nominal coverage. The total mass of salt collected on the main zone, margins and verges on the1/10full and full runs at the same nominal speed shall not differ from the calculated total (see A.5) by more than 10%. For class

45、 A spreaders the total mass of salt collected on the main zone, margins and verges on the1/10full and full runs at20km/h shall not differ from the total mass collected on the runs at40km/h by more than 10%. b) Overall variation in coverage.The total mass of salt collected on the 1/10full run shall n

46、ot differ from the total mass collected on the full run (at the same speed) by more than 10 %. c) Accuracy of longitudinal coverage. The total mass of salt collected on any one transverse strip after one run shall not differ from the mean mass collected on the thre strips after that run by more than

47、 20% for classes A and B, 30 % for class C or 40 % for class D spreaders. d) Accuracy of coverage of main zone. The total mass ot salt collected on any one sample rectangle on the main zone after one run shall not be less than 50% nor more than200% of the mean mass collected on all the sets of sampl

48、e rectangles on the main zone after the1/10 full and full runs at the same speed. e) Accuracy of coverage on margins. The mean mass of salt collected on either margin after one run shall be not less than25 % of the mean mass collected on all the sets of sample rectangles on the main zone after the 1

49、/10full and full runs at the same speed. f) Wastage. The total mass of salt collected on either verge on the1/10full and full runs at the same speed shall not exceed0.5 % of the total mass collected on both those runs. All spreaders passing the test shall be supplied with a certificate. In the case of class C and D spreaders, the certificate shall also state the speed during the test and, in the case of class D spreaders, the width of spread.
