Summary of Practice4.1 This practice describes the procedure for assessing thesubstrate water absorption (often referred to as substrateporosity) of horizontal, substrate surfaces prior to the installa-tion of resilient floor coverings. The procedure
12、 involvesapplying a drop of water to the surface of properly preparedsubstrate, and then determining whether that drop of water isabsorbed within a given time period.5. Significance and Use5.1 The ability of a substrate surface to readily absorb wateris a key indicator in determining how to correctl

18、criteria in their application instruc-tions since this directly impacts the spread rate of directlyapplied material, the open time, and other critical installationfactors.5.2 Installing flooring products over low or non-absorptive(sometimes referred to as “non-porous”) substrates such asdensely mach
19、ine-troweled concrete, mature and well-hydratedconcrete, existing resilient flooring, polymer terrazzo andothers may require adjustments to the surface preparationmethod or product selection to ensure a successful installation.5.3 Use this practice to obtain a qualitative assessment ofsubstrate wate
20、r absorption (porosity) and whether or not thatsubstrate should be regarded as porous/absorptive or non-porous/non-absorptive as these terms relate to the installationof resilient floor coverings, adhesives, self-levelingunderlayments, primers, and other products. This practice willproduce results d
21、irectly applicable to determining appropriatesurface preparation requirements in accordance with manufac-turers specifications, but it is in no way meant to replacepublished manufacturers literature regarding the determina-tion of substrate water absorption (porosity) and the impactsuch has, if any,
22、 on substrate preparation requirements and onthe installation of their respective materials.5.4 Substrates that evidence immediate absorption, arechalky or dusty, or have varying degrees of absorption mayrequire priming or other additional surface preparation prior tosubsequent installations.5.5 Sub
23、strates that evidence no absorption may indicate thepresence of a contaminant that may negatively impact properadhesion. In such cases, bond tests performed in accordancewith the particular manufacturers established guidelines arestrongly recommended.5.6 The size, shape, and color of the water drop
24、mayindicate the presence of contaminants or other special circum-stances that may require discussion with the manufacturer ofthe slab covering to be installed.5.7 Some surfaces such as concrete can become denser andless porous/less absorptive over time as the material continuesto gain strength and d
