3、s that protect againstpotential falls by children age five and under through open windows not designated for emergencyescape or rescue in installations more than 75 ft (23 m) above ground level in multiple family dwellingbuildings since windows at these heights are beyond the reach of rescue ladders

4、 currently in use.Window fall prevention devices currently available include window opening control devices, windowWindow Opening Control Devices (WOCDs), window fall prevention screens, and some types ofwindow guards. These devices use different strategies to prevent children from falling through o

5、penwindows. Window opening control devices restrict the size of the open area of the window so that itis too small for a young child to fall through. They do this by allowing the window opening to be setat a predetermined position. Window fall prevention screens and fall prevention window guardsprov

6、ide a barrier to prevent a child from falling through an open window. This safety specificationdoesis not apply tointended for devices applied to windows installed in one and two family dwellings.A special study3 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates that young childrenare at high

7、 risk of death and serious injury from window falls. Children age five and younger accountfor a higher percentage of window fall fatalities and injuries.4Security from forced entry is not within the scope of this safety specification and is not the intendedfunction of any of the devices referred to

8、herein. Window fall prevention devices usually differ inpurpose and application from security/burglar bars. The general purpose of a window fall preventiondevice is to prevent a child age five or younger from falling through an open window. The generalpurpose of a security bar is to prevent unlawful

9、 entry through a window. Generally window fallprevention devices and security bars are two separate devices. However, a security bar could be usedas a fall prevention device if it meets the requirements of this safety specification.The CPSC has advised caregivers to open windows less than 4 in. when

10、 children are present as onemeans to prevent child falls through open windows. Window opening control devices provide a meansthat the window, when opened in an initial operation, will satisfy the CPSC recommendation to openless than 4 in.The 4-in. dimension is drawn from related building codes and s

11、tandards for openings inguardrail assemblies,5 and is universally accepted as the appropriate dimension to prevent a child frompassing through balcony or guard railing systems. An additional operation is required to open thewindow further. The additional operation must be performed without the use o

12、f keys, tools or specialknowledge. Security from Window opening control devices provide a means that the window, whenopened in an initial operation, will satisfy the CPSC recommendation to open less than 41 This safety specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F15 and is the direct r

Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms:3.1.1 aftermarket, adjreferring to a product or device that is manufactured separately from a window but is intended to be usedin conjunction with a window. For purposes of this standard, such a device is intended to be

36、 attached to or near a window or itsframe in order to prevent a young child from passing or falling through the window when the window is opened.3.1.2 emergency escape (egress) and rescue (ingress) window, na window intended for emergency escape (egress) and rescue(ingress) during an emergency situa

37、tion such as fire, gas leak, etc., as defined by the prevailing applicable building and fire codes.3.1.3 fall prevention window guard, na device designed to fit into or onto a window to prevent a child from passing or fallingthrough an open window. Typically mounted on the interior frame of the wind

38、ow and includes side frames fastened to the sidesof a window frame and a plurality of spaced-apart, transverse, tubular, width-adjustable crosspiece elements to form a grid patternbetween the side supports to prevent passage of a child.3.1.4 window, nan opening constructed in a wall or a roof to adm

General RequirementsWINDOW FALL PREVENTION SCREEN AND FALL PREVENTION WINDOW GUARD DEVICES4.1 Window fall prevention screen or fall prevention window guard devices shall be constructed so as to prohibit the freepassage of a 4.0 in. (102 mm) diameter rigid sphere12 anywhere in

45、 the window opening (as required by applicable codes for thatjurisdiction), during or after testing as specified in 8.1 through 8.3, when the window fall prevention device is installed inaccordance with the manufacturers instructions.4.2 The distance between window fall prevention screen or fall pre

46、vention window guard device structural members orcomponents after all testing is conducted shall not exceed 4.0 in. (102 mm) when a 60 lbf13 (267 N) direct force is applied inaccordance with the test method according to 8.2.4.3 Window fall prevention screen or fall prevention window guard devices sh

47、all be free of sharp projections and edges.4.4 Window fall prevention screen or fall prevention window guard devices shall not interfere with the operation, function orperformance of the window to applicable standards, and shall not violate light, ventilation, and emergency escape and rescuerequirem

48、ents of the applicable building code.4.5 Each window fall prevention screen or fall prevention window guard device shall be sold with installation instructions andsafety information included in the packaging for each device.4.6 Installation instructions shall include the statement that a copy of the
