While the typical canine companion certainly gives his owner immeasurable happiness, its obvious that he lives a life of remarkable leisure. Our pets gracefully go from the carefree days o
2、f childhood directly to the rest and relaxation of retirement, skipping the working part of life entirely. But some dogs happily perform very demanding jobs for much of their life, putting in a full days work just like the rest of us.【 R1】 _Every day, they help their masters get from place to place

Guide dogs help blind or visually impaired people get around in the world.【 R2】_A guide dog must know to disobey any command that would put the handler in danger. 【 R3】 _ This capacity is extremely important at crosswalks, where the handler and dog must work very closely together to nav
4、igate the situation safely.【 R4】 _Dogs cannot distinguish the color of traffic lights, so the handler must make the decision of when it is safe to proceed across the road. The handler listens to the flow of traffic to figure out when the light has changed and then gives the command “Forward“.【 R5】 _
5、If there are cars approaching, the dog waits until the danger is gone and then follows the forward command. Guide dogs enjoy their work immensely, and they get a lot of satisfaction from a job well done, but there is no room for typical dog fun during the workday. Game, treats and praise distract th
6、e dog from helping its handler navigate the course.【 R6】 _This is because a guide dog must be able to come to the handlers workplace or be in public places without creating a disturbance. When you see a guide dog on the job, it is extremely important that you recognize that it is at work.【 R7】 _Peop
7、le are very impressed with guide dogs and so we have a natural inclination to praise them, but the best thing you can do to help a guide dog is to leave it alone so that it can pay attention to its surroundings and maintain its focus on its handler. 【 R8】 _ A. In most countries, they are allowed any
8、where that the public is allowed, so they can help their handlers be any place they might want to go. B. When the team reaches the curb, the dog stops, signaling to the handler that they have reached a crosswalk. C. This ability, called selective disobedience, is perhaps the most amazing thing about
9、 guide dogs that they can balance obedience with their own assessment of the situation. D. If there is no danger, the dog proceeds across the road in a straight line. E. Guide dogs, one of the most familiar sorts of working dogs, provide an invaluable service to humans. F. Guiding is very complicate

13、The workplace, once a romantic playground, became as tense as a demilitarized zone.【 R3】 _Luckily, they have emerged from their failed romances with one valuable lesson learnt: office relationships dont work. Its natural to meet someone in the workplace when you spend three-quarters of your life the
14、re. An office romance might even turn out stronger and sweeter because of the commonly-shared working experience. But when emotional bankruptcy occurs, being in the same office as your former love might be torture. 【 R4】 _Whereas other couples can only meet after work, you get to look at your belove
15、d at work every day. All of a sudden, work seems so much more tolerable when you have a close mate who is able to relate to your office problems and offer a reassuring presence when the going gets tough. Your work performance might even improve as both of you motivate and help each other out. An off
16、ice couple also share the same social network, which generally includes the other colleagues in the workplace. 【 R5】 _The physical closeness that was so cherished by the couple becomes a double-edged sword. The thrill of seeing your beloved daily at work quickly sinks into the dread of bumping into
17、her whenever you head for the copy machine. Also, without the benefit of breathing space to allow you to recover from the failed relationship, you are forced to suppress your anger and jealousy as other people start approaching to make a romantic offer to your former partner.【 R6】 _The lovers might
18、start to take each other for granted. And lets not forget the professional conflicts of interest. For instance, what happens if one supervises the other, or if they are competing for the same promotion? And, as the office relationship explodes, its aftershock is often felt on all sides.【 R7】 _Most i
19、mportantly, an office relationship might make the lovers believe that they have a lot more in common than they actually do. Take away the job-related conversation, and you might be left with two people who have very little to say to one another. Nonetheless, office romances still happen.【 R8】 _But m
20、ark out lines between work and your personal life. Sad break-ups in my office show that love and work make a disastrous mix. A. Not that intra-office romance is always bad, of course. B.
