2、rs more than once. A Market awareness of the MP3 has exploded and the retailer who specializes in MP3 is seeing growth like never before. Admittedly, some customers buy their first MP3 in the supermarket, but for advice, add-ons and particular services they turn to the specialist. There are a large
3、number of MP3 retailers and I cant help but feel the market only has room for four players. Undoubtedly, customer service is the factor that differentiates operators and I think this year we will probably see rationalization in the sector. B When I first started in the industry, MP3 were retailing a
4、t a thousand pounds and were as large as box files. Now, prices are constantly being driven down, because they are getting more compact and also there is intense competition between the MP3 providers. This will continue, and while retail dealers profits will be affected dramatically, MP3 providers w
5、ill have to generate more revenues by offering more services to the MP3 user. C Over a few years, prices have dropped sharply and technological advances have meant products have changed - and are changing. Successful retailers must try to keep on top of these developments and invest in the training
6、of employees so they are able to offer impartial advice to customers. E-commerce is taking off but this wont necessarily replace traditional retail outlets. In order to stand out, you need innovative ideas on customer service. We dont believe in criticizing other retailers, but theres nothing partic
7、ularly exciting out there at present. D The MP3 business is behaving like the Internet industry in take-up and the pace of innovation, and its important not to be left behind. We must continue to innovate in delivering the product to the customer. In terms of service provision, you can draw comparis
8、ons between us and our closest rival, but clearly all the main MP3 retailers have succeeded in taking the industry forward. Growth has accelerated rapidly and the MP3 has changed from simply being an entertaining tool, to being a multifunctional gadget for everyone. 1 There is a need for retail staf
9、f to stay informed about the MP3 they are selling. 2 The market will not sustain the present number of MP3 retailers. 3 The use of MP3 is no longer restricted to a specific group of people. 4 There is a dramatic change in the size of MP 5 There is a negative view of competing MP3 retailers. 6 There
10、is a comparison between change in the MP3 industry and that in a different sector. 7 Those services available at MP3 outlets are not provided by other retailers. 二、 PART TWO 7 Read the extract below from an article about the coffee industry. Choose the best sentence from A to C to fill each of the b
11、lanks. For each blank (8-12) mark one letter (A- G) on your Answer Sheet. Do not mark any letter twice. Coffee is worth approximately 50 -60bn per annum in terms of world sales. It is a truly international commodity, and today more than 50 countries in the world grow coffee beans, This makes the cof
12、fee industry fairly universal, according to Pablo Dubois, Head of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), based in London. ICO organization helps coffee producers and promotes coffee consumption worldwide. ICO estimates that world production next year will reach 97. 5 million bags. 11. 3 millio
13、n bags higher than the current year. (8) . As the largest producing country, Brazil is particularly important in the coffee world. In 1994 Brazil was responsible for 25% of world production. Colombia was next with 13.4%. Indonesia had 7.5%, Mexico 4.7%, Guatemala 3.8% and Ethiopia and Vietnam were e
14、qual with 3.4%. Coffee is a tough crop, and can be grown in areas where it is difficult or impossible to grow other crops. (9) However, disease is always a problem for coffee production, as we can see in some parts of South America at the moment. ICO is active in educating farmers about avoiding dis
15、ease and dealing with problems when they occur. The distribution chain varies from country to country, explains Peter Reeves. In most countries the smaller farmers sell their crop to a local trader, who then sells it on to exporters. There are, however, other distribution systems. (10) . Some countr
16、ies, like Vietnam. have special government marketing organizations for coffee. Coffee prices often vary greatly from one year to me next. In 2003, for example, there was a large rise in the world price, which was immediately felt by me consumer. Rising prices always result in a drop in sales, which
17、will have a bad effect on those developing countries. which are highly dependent on foreign exchange from coffee exports (11) . In the opinion of Peter Reeves, the biggest problem for his organization is to create greater consumer awareness of the different varieties of coffee and different ways of
18、preparing it. (12) . ICO is therefore concentrating its promotional activities on Russia and China. It is also encouraging environmentally friendly coffee production, and last years seminar on coffee and the environment created a lot of interest. The future looks bright for the coffee industry. 19、s estimated that consumption over the next few years will continue to rise steadily. New markets like Eastern Europe and China are expected to develop fast. A. As a result, the membership now represents 94% of all exporters and 60% of all importers. B. In some of these countries, this can amount to
