22、al 1.1 Purpose The purpose of this Standard is to establish minimum sanitation requirements for the materials, design, and construction of thermoplastic refuse containers. 1.2 Scope This Standard contains sanitation requirements for new thermoplastic refuse containers intended for the indoor and out

23、door storage of refuse. Thermoplastic refuse container materials and components covered under other NSF or NSF/ANSI Standards or Criteria shall also comply with the requirements therein. This Standard is not intended to restrict new unit design, provided that such design meets the minimum specificat

24、ions described herein. 1.3 Alternate materials, design, and construction While specific materials, design, and construction may be stipulated in this Standard, thermoplastic refuse containers that incorporate alternate materials, design, or construction may be acceptable when such containers meet th

25、e intent of the applicable requirements contained herein. 1.4 Measurement Decimal and SI conversions provided parenthetically shall be considered equivalent. Metric conversions and significant figure rounding have been made according to IEEE/ASTM SI 10. 2 Normative references The following documents

29、re intended to ensure that the materials used in the manufacture of thermoplastic refuse containers are unaffected by exposure to refuse and other substances that may contact the materials in the intended use environment. 4.1 General materials requirements 4.1.1 When evaluated against ASTM D570, mat

30、erials shall not increase in weight by more than 0.5%. 4.1.2 Materials shall be resistant to household chemicals including, but not limited to, detergents, disinfectants, deodorants, and insecticides. NOTE The following thermoplastic materials have acceptable chemical resistance: high-density polyet

31、hylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC), poly(vinylidene chloride) (PVDC), polysulfone (PSU), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), polypropylene (PP), poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS), polyarylsulfone (PASU), polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE), and

32、polytrifluoroethylene (PTFE). Additional thermoplastic materials may be acceptable provided that manufacturers supply documentation of material chemical resistance. 4.1.3 Thermoplastic refuse containers intended primarily for the outdoor storage of refuse shall contain a minimum of 2% carbon black o

33、r equivalent ultraviolet protection. If a UV protectant other than 2% carbon black is employed, the manufacturer shall provide data showing its equivalency. 4.1.4 Materials shall not sustain damage during routine cleaning and sanitization (see 6.1). 4.1.5 Materials shall be impact resistant (see 6.2

34、). 4.1.6 Materials shall be resistant to stress cracking (see 6.3). 4.1.7 Materials shall be abrasion resistant (see 6.4). 5 Design and construction This section contains design and construction requirements for equipment covered within the scope of this Standard. 5.1 General design and construction

35、 requirements 5.1.1 Thermoplastic refuse containers and their components shall be sealed and easily cleanable. 5.1.2 Internal angles or corners of 135 or less shall be smooth and have minimum continuous radii of 1/8 in (0.13 in, 3.2 mm). 5.1.3 Exposed external corners and angles shall be sealed and

36、smooth. They shall be formed with sufficient radii to facilitate drainage. 5.1.4 Refuse contact surfaces shall be readily accessible and easily cleanable. 2015NSF NSF/ANSI 21 2015 3 5.1.5 The container shall minimize exterior gnawing edges. This requirement shall not apply to raised reinforcing memb

37、ers, decorative features, or lifting devices that do not have a common wall with the container. 5.2 Watertight container requirements 5.2.1 The container shall be watertight. 5.2.2 The container shall be designed and manufactured so that refuse empties easily when the container is inverted. 5.3 Non-

38、watertight container requirements 5.3.1 The container shall be used with a leak proof liner and shall be permanently marked with “This container requires the use of a leak proof”, or equivalent. 5.3.2 Non-watertight containers are exempt from the sealing requirements in 5.1. 5.4 Cover requirements 5

39、.4.1 When in place, the cover shall overlap and continuously contact the container opening. 5.4.2 Thermoplastic refuse containers used primarily outdoors shall have a cover that, when in place, prevents water from entering the container opening. NOTE Thermoplastic refuse containers used primarily in

40、doors are exempt from this requirement. Covers with swinging-closure mechanisms are acceptable for indoor use. 5.4.3 The cover shall minimize exterior gnawing edges. This requirement shall not apply to raised reinforcing members, decorative features, or lifting devices that do not have a common wall

41、 with the cover. 5.4.4 The cover shall be designed and manufactured so that it provides for secure attachment to the container. The disengagement of the attachment device (for removable covers) shall permit the removal of the cover with one hand. Hinged covers are acceptable provided that they can b

42、e opened with one hand. 5.5 Requirements for handles/lifting devices Handles or lifting devices shall be provided to permit lifting, carrying, and emptying. Handles / lifting devices and attachments shall be readily accessible and easily cleanable. 6 Performance 6.1 Cleaning and sanitization resista

43、nce 6.1.1 Test method 212 5 F (100 3 C) water shall be mixed with chlorine sanitizer until a 200-ppm (mg/L) chlorine concentration is achieved in the bottom of the container. Using a long-handled brush, both the container and the cover shall be thoroughly cleaned with the chlorine mixture. The conta

44、iner shall be emptied and dried, and both the container and the cover shall be examined for evidence of damage. 6.1.2 Acceptance criteria The container and cover shall show no evidence of damage following the cleaning and sanitization procedure. 2015NSF NSF/ANSI 21 2015 4 6.2 Impact resistance 6.2.1

45、 Test method 6.2.1.1 Container Containers shall be loaded with loosely bagged sand (or similar material) at the rate of 4 lb/ft3(64 kg/m3) for non-wheeled containers and 15 lb/ft3(240 kg/m3) for wheeled containers. Containers and covers shall be conditioned at -20 1 F (-29 0.5 C) for a minimum of 24

46、 h. Non-wheeled containers shall be dropped on a bottom corner from a height of 4.0 ft (1.2 m). Wheeled containers shall be dropped on a bottom corner from a height of 1.0 ft (0.3 m). 6.2.1.2 Cover A free-falling 2 0.1 in (50 3 mm) diameter metal ball weighing 1.37 0.01 lb (620 4 g) shall be dropped

47、 from a height of 105 in (2.7 m) and shall impact the cover at any location with 12 foot-pounds (16.3 J). 6.2.2 Acceptance criteria The container and cover shall show no evidence of breakage or permanent deformation. If not discernible by visual or tactile means, breakage shall be determined by fill

48、ing the container with water. The container shall not leak. 6.3 Stress cracking resistance 6.3.1 Test method 6.3.1.1 Container A 1.0 x 6.0 in (25 x 150 mm) specimen shall be cut from a container with a weld line, if any, in the center of the 6.0 in (150 mm) dimension. The specimen shall be clamped s

49、o that it is bent into a 180 “U” shape, with a radius of bend to thickness ratio of 2.5 0.2. The clamped specimen shall be immersed in a beaker containing a nonionic surfactant, such as nonoxynol or equivalent. The specimen shall remain in the beaker at room temperature for 16 h. 6.3.1.2 Cover A 0.50 x 2.50 in (13 x 64 mm) specimen shall be cut from a cover with a weld line, if any, in the center of the 2.50 in (64 mm) dimension. The specimen shall be clamped so that it is bent into a 180 “U” shape, with a radius of bend to thicknes
