、56 BSI 01-2000 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies the design requirements, performance and test procedure for manifold pressure gauges for aircraft. It is primarily applicable to mechanical instruments operated directly by the manifold pressure. The accuracy requirements are, however, applica
、ble irrespective of the operating principle. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions shall apply: manifold pressure gauge an instrument used on aircraft to indicate the absolute pressure in the induction pipe of the engine. This instrument was formerly refer
、red to as a “boost gauge” standard ground pressure the standard ground pressure is defined as1013.25millibars (I.C.A.O. 1)standard atmosphere) or29.921inches of mercury under BS2520 2)conditions, i.e.mercury at0 C, g=980.665dyn/cm 2 Section 1. General requirements 3 Preferred size The preferred size
、 is that of aircraft instrument case Type1 or Type2, as specified in BSG100, “General requirements for electrical equipment and indicating instruments for aircraft.” 4 Preferred units of measurement The preferred units of measurement are: a) Pounds per square inch for instruments in which a standard
、 ground pressure is marked as zero. b) Inches of mercury (BS2520 conditions) for instruments graduated in absolute pressure. 5 General construction The instrument shall be sound and suitable for its purpose and shall comply with the relevant requirements of BSG100. Section 2. Particular requirements
、 6 Construction a) The movement of directly operated instruments shall be of the type in which manifold pressure is not applied directly to the interior of the case. b) A fine metallic gauze filter shall be incorporated in the union connection for the purpose of preventing dirt from entering the ins
、trument. The filter shall be securely retained in position by a positive device which will, at the same time, permit the filter to be removed easily for cleaning. c) A suitable constriction shall be provided in the inlet union on the instrument side of the filter to prevent the possibility of the in
、strument being damaged by engine backfires. d) The union connection shall be securely locked in position in such a manner as to withstand a torque of100in.lb, applied in either direction, when the instrument is mounted on a suitable plate and held by fixing bolts. e) If an adjustable lubber mark is
、fitted, the means of adjustment shall be such that it can be locked against inadvertent or irresponsible operation. f) The movement shall be provided with a safety device to prevent damage to the mechanism under a low pressure overload of12lb/sq.in. below standard atmospheric pressure. The movement
、shall also withstand a pressure overload of50percent of its positive range, i.e.the scale range above standard atmospheric pressure. g) The movement shall be provided with stops so that when the instrument is subjected to the overloads specified inf), the pointer comes to rest in each direction in t
、he gap between the ends of the scale. h) The pressure scale shall be evenly divided, that is the angular movement of the pointer shall be approximately the same for equal intervals of pressure taken anywhere over the scale. If a single pointer is used for the presentation, the scale length shall not
、 be such that the pointer makes more than one revolution. 1) International Civil Aviation Organization. 2) BS2520, “Barometer conventions and tables.”BS2G113:1956 2 BSI 01-2000 Section 3. Tests 7 General a) Tests shall be made to prove compliance with all the requirements of this British Standard. I
、t is not intended or recommended that complete tests shall be made on every instrument supplied. Two kinds of test therefore are specified as follows: Type tests. (Clauses8 to16), which shall be made in that order on the same instrument, on representative samples of each particular design and range
、of instrument. Routine production tests. (Clause17), which shall be made on every instrument manufactured in accordance with the BritishStandard. b) The minimum tests recommended to verify the serviceability of instruments manufactured in compliance with this British Standard are indicated inAppendi
