Scope1.1 This test procedure provides a quantitative laboratorymethod for determining the edge cleaning effectiveness of avacuum cleaner
3、along walls and baseboards.1.2 This test method is applicable to household and com-mercial types of upright, canister, combination, stick and handheld vacuum cleaners.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 cleaning ability, dry, nthe potential of a vacuumcleaner to remove dirt from a surface (sometimes referred to inthe
7、 industry as cleanability, dry).3.1.2 model, nthe designation of a group of vacuumcleaners having identical mechanical and electrical construc-tion with only cosmetic or nonfunctional differences.3.1.3 population, nthe total of all units of a particularmodel vacuum cleaner being tested.3.1.4 sample,
8、 na group of vacuum cleaners taken from alarge collection of vacuum cleaners of one particular modelwhich serves to provide information that may be used as a basisfor making a decision concerning the larger collection.3.1.5 test run, nthe definitive procedure that produces asingular measured result.

Significance and Use4.1 This test method provides an indication of how close toa wall or baseboard a vacuum cleaner removes dirt/dust. Theamount of dirt removed in the laboratory test may not be thesame as in a home; however, it will s
10、how that, in most cases,a vacuum cleaner that performs well in the laboratory willperform well in a home. Laboratory results may differ due tovariations in the homes: carpets, dirt, and other factors.NOTE 1The primary goal of this test method is not to evaluate thedegree or the amount of dirt or dus
11、t debris that a given product removes,but rather how close to a wall or baseboard a vacuum has performed somemeasure of cleaning.4.2 In order to provide a uniform basis for measuring theperformance described in 1.1, a standardized test carpet andtest dust are employed in this procedure.5. Apparatus5
12、.1 Weighing Scale for Weighing Test Dirt, accurate to 0.10g (0.0035 oz) and having a weighing capacity of at least 500 g(1.1 lb).1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F11 on VacuumCleaners and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F11.21 on Cleanability.Current edition

15、and or other type of equip-ment capable of establishing the specified rate of movementand total cycle time.5.3 Voltmeter, to measure input volts to the vacuum cleaner,to provide measurements accurate to within 61%.5.4 Voltage-Regulator System, to control the input voltageto the vacuum cleaner. 16、egulator shall be capable ofmaintaining the vacuum cleaners rated voltage 61 % andrated frequency 61 Hz. having a wave form that is essentiallysinusoidal with 3 % maximum harmonic distortion for theduration of the test.5.5 Dirt DispenserDispensing system that provides theoperator with a method to di
17、stribute the test dirt uniformly onthe carpet test area.5.6 Rotating Agitator Conditioning Vacuum Cleaner/Equipment, for conditioning new test carpets and removingresidual dirt from the test carpet before each test run. Thiscannot be the unit being tested.5.7 Temperature and Humidity Indicators, to
18、provide tem-perature measurements accurate to within 612 C (61F) andhumidity measurements accurate to within 2 % relative humid-ity.5.8 Supporting SurfaceA flat surface consisting of a pieceof 19-mm (34-in.) thick exteriorgrade plywood with the “A”surface upward to support the test carpet. The test
19、carpet maybe fastened to the supporting surface, but only the four corners,by any acceptable means.5.9 T-bar GuideA “T-bar” constructed of wood (or othersuitable material) per Fig. 1. 21、ame model vacuumcleaner selected at random in accordance with good statisticalpractice shall constitute the population sample.7.1.1 To determine the best estimate of edge cleaningeffectiveness for the population of the vacuum cleaner modelbeing tested, the arithmetic mean of the edge cleaning effec-
22、tiveness rating of the sample from the population shall beestablished by testing it to a 90 % confidence level within65 % of the mean value.7.1.2 Annex A1 provides a procedural example for deter-mining the 90 % confidence level and when the sample sizeshall be increased.8. Conditioning8.1 Test RoomM
23、aintain the test room in which all condi-tioning and vacuum cleaner test is performed at 21 6 3C (706 5F) and 45 to 55 % relative humidity.8.2 All components involved in the test shall remain and beexposed in the controlled environment for at least 16 h prior tothe start of the test.FIG. 1 T-Bar Gui
