3、y of gravity sewers for secondary usessuch as the installation of optical fiber systems.1.1.1 This practice applies to the process of selecting gravitysewers that are appropriate for accepting an optical fibersystem as opposed to standards for the installation, operationand maintenance of such syste
4、m within sewers.1.2 This practice applies to both man accessible and maninaccessible sewer systems.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. Summary of Practice4.1 Optical fiber cable and conduit systems in existingsewers shall be design
13、ed and installed so that they have aminimal effect on the sewers hydraulic performance and noeffect on their structural integrity. The ultimate success ofthe installation and operation of optical fiber and sewer systemsdepends upon the proper evaluation and selection of appropri-ate sewers. The steps in
17、the process include the followingitems:4.1.1 Cleaning,4.1.2 Inspection and evaluation of the sewers which arecandidates for optical fiber cable or conduit installation,4.1.3 Selection of sewer route, and4.1.4 Documentation of cable routing.5. Significance and Use5.1 This practice is intended to assi
18、st engineers and sewerowner/operators in determining the suitability of sewers for asecondary use as hosts for optical fiber cables and conduits. Itmust be kept in mind that the primary use of the sewers is tocarry wastewater or storm water, or both.Any secondary use ofthe system shall not significa
19、ntly impair the primary use. It isup to the engineer to decide upon any exceptions that may beinvolved in the selection process.5.2 Before the selection procedure begins, the installer musthave explicit authorization from the owner/operator allowingan evaluation to be conducted for the installation
20、of opticalfiber cables or conduits within their sewer system.5.3 Engineers and owners should also be cognizant of howthe installation of optical fiber cable or conduits will impact thefuture operational, maintenance, and rehabilitation needs of thesewers.6. Sewer Selection Procedure6.1 Cleaning and
21、Flow Bypass:6.1.1 Requirement to CleanPrior to selection of a candi-date sewer, the sewer must be thoroughly cleaned to allow forproper inspection and evaluation according to the selectioncriteria outlined below. The National Association of SewerServices Companies (NASSCO) provides a helpful standar
22、d(NASSCO Standard). This cleaning process shall be performedwith the equipment recommended by the optical fiber installeras being compatible (see 6.1.3). The cleaning process thenserves as a test of the effectiveness of the cleaning equipmentas well as allowing the inspection of the integrity of the
23、 sewer.6.1.2 Exceptions to Cleaning RequirementIn cases wherethe pipe has recently been cleaned or has been recentlyinstalled, the cleaning requirement may be waived by mutualconsent of the system owner and optical fiber system installer.6.1.3 Requirement for CompatibilityThe installer shallrecommen
