Starting this autumn, more than four million first and seventh graders from Hunan, Henan, Guangdong, Liaoning and ot
4、her provincial-level regions will use the new textbooks. According to Wang Xuming, president of the Language and Culture Press, 40 percent of the contents in the previous edition has been changed. Traditional material makes up 30 percent of the revised primary school textbooks, while it increases to
5、 about 40 percent for secondary school textbooks. “ We did so to address the needs of parents, who want their children to learn more about traditional culture,“ said a senior editor surnamed Zhu in charge of the middle school textbooks. “ Now many people cannot even understand the language in classi
6、cal Chinese books, and parents compete to send their children to commercial training centers for traditional culture,“ she said. China has seen a renewed interest in traditional education. A report by the Southern Metropolitan Daily said that China has more than 3,000 Sishu, or traditional private s
7、chools, in addition to training centers teaching students classical essays. “Demand for private education grows when teaching of traditional culture in public schools is not enough. Whats more, the poetry and essays in the new textbooks are selected not only for students to learn the language, but a

11、ht Against Telecom Fraud Two men have been arrested in connection with a telecom fraud case in east Chinas Shandong Province, believed to have led to the death of a teenager. The case came to public attention following widespread media reports of the death of Xu Yuyu, an 18-year-old high school grad
12、uate in Linyi City. Xu was reported to have lost 9,900 yuan (1,490 US dollars) of her university tuition fees to telecom fraudsters and, according to reports, died of a cardiac arrest on Aug. 19, 2016. Just a few miles away, another student, Song Zhenning, was also reported to have died in the same
13、way, having lost money in another fraud case. A third similar incident has also been reported in the city. “In those cases, the suspects all provided accurate information about the victims, such as their enrollment information or the bank account number, which means some related departments might be
14、 connected with the criminal parties,“ Zhu Xiaoding, a Beijing-based lawyer, said. Tian Zumeng, from the Education Ministry, said that university students should be alert to such fraud and not take it for granted if someone asks you to provide your bank account and passwords. “Justice and administra
15、tive departments should, in solving these cases, investigate thoroughly and call criminals to account,“ Zhu said. Meng Jianzhu, head of the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, made the following remarks during an inspection visit to Shanghai, saying that “To curb

China Demands Stricter Rules for Live Streaming As well as asking sites to step up control of live broadcasts, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) wants t
19、he content monitored full-time. It is the latest move by authorities to clamp down on what it sees as “inappropriate“ content online. Live streaming is particularly popular among Chinese youth. There are an estimated 80 platforms in use around the country, with some gaining notoriety for hosting liv
20、e broadcasts of stunts that have gone viral. The Peoples Daily reported that the CAC statement asked sites to “strengthen security evaluation of new products like live broadcast“. It is just one of a range of new requirements placed on websites to better regulate themselves, including putting the on
21、us on them to set up 24-hour monitoring of their online content. In April, the Ministry of Culture announced it was investigating a number of popular live-streaming platforms for allegedly hosting pornographic or violent content that “harms social morality“. Live streaming platforms like Bilibili, Y
22、Y, Inke or Douyu are attracting millions of viewers. The content is monetized by allowing viewers to purchase virtual gifts for real money and send them to the host of any stream they particularly like. The revenue coming in from those gifts is then shared between the host and the streaming site. Ch
23、inas tech giants including messaging and gaming company Tencent, mobile company Xiaomi and micro-blogging giant Sina, among others, all have video streaming sites. According to a guideline issued by Chinas Ministry of Culture, “ violent and pornographic performances will be automatically flagged and
