2、own to help protect against heart disease by lowering blood pressure and reducing the heart rate. The 10-year study looked at 4,435 adults aged between 30 and 75, about half of whom owned a cat. The findings, presented at a stroke conference in America, showed that 3.4 per cent of the cat owners die
3、d from a heart attack over 10 years. Among the group who had never owned a cat the rate was 5.8 per cent. Cat owners still had a much reduced chance of developing strokes or heart attacks when researchers took account of other factors known to trigger heart disease, including high cholesterol levels
4、, smoking and diabetes. 2 The ideas which had grown over two thousand years of observation have had to be radically revised. In less than a hundred years, we have found a new way to think of ourselves. From sitting at the center of the universe, we now find ourselves orbiting an average-sized sun, w
5、hich is just one of millions of stars in our own Milky Way galaxy. And our galaxy itself is just one of billions of galaxies, in a universe that is infinite and expanding. Researchers have since cloned cats, goats, cows, mice, pigs, rabbits, horses, deer, mules and gaur, a large wild ox of Southeast Asia. So far, efforts to clon
10、e a monkey or another primate with the same techniques have failed. Uncertainties about the health and life span of cloned animals persist; Dolly died prematurely in 2003 after developing cancer and arthritis. 4 “The conventional methods are meant to bring out fingerprint patterns with regular light
11、 and they have to treat those with powder, which alters them,“ Worley said. “With this you dont have to alter it or treat it at all. We can determine the elements in a fingerprint and get a pattern at the same time.“ The technology focuses a tight beam of X-rays on surfaces with fingerprints and cre
12、ates a computer picture out of those scans. For big labs, the method could be a great way to bring out prints that cant be seen any other way, said Majidi, another lab scientist “The technique fills a unique niche,“ he said. “These are prints that would otherwise be useless. If you have prints on a
13、dark surface, for example, they really dont develop well using normal techniques. If you have prints from an adolescent or child, the chemicals in the fingertips are different and dont stick around long enough for traditional methods.“ 5 Scientific and technological advances are enabling us to compr
