2、ilable for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE. 1.1 Scope. This specification covers various sizes of intermodal container van bodies intended for the installation of a variety of operating equipment. The van bodies are modified refrigerated XSO (Inter national

3、 Organization for Standardization) containers which feature interior heating and air conditioning and utility electrical systems, transport by land and sea, in addition to wheeled vehicle mounted transport. capability between operation sgtes. may transport two van bodies, the first mounted on the st

4、raight transporter truck and the second mounted on the towed dolly converter and semitrailer. Contact, galvanic and electrolytic action between dissimilar metals, as defined in ML-T-704, sha

37、ll be prevented by the application of zinc chromate primer conformng to TT-P-1757 to each of the metal surfaces or by insulation of one surface, from the other surface by application of an elastomer gasket, electrical tape, or other effective means, preventing any direct contact. The separation of t

38、he surfaces shall be not less than 2 mils. compounds shall not be used nor shall tape be used of the type that bunches between the metal surfaces during hole drilling operations. Asphaltic-type 3.4.2 Noise absorption material. man specified (see 6.2), and when required by the construction methods se

39、lected by the contractor to.meet the noise level limit, the van body interior shall be lined with acoustic absorption materials. The material selected for ceiling, walls, front end, and larger rear 2/3 door (excluding personnel and other doom) shall, have a noise reduction coefficient (WC) value of

40、at least Q.75, F 3.4.3 Corrosion. Ferrous components and parts o the basic van body, if furnished, shall be of corrosion-resistant steel or protected from corrosion by application marine type of plating. 3.5 Environmental conditions. 3.5.1 Operational temperatures. The van bodies shall not be damage

41、d during operation and transport in any ambient air temperature between minus 40 F and plus 120 F. 3.5.2 The van bodies shall not leak water inta the interior of the van bodies when exposed to rain ranging from a drizzle to a heavy rain of 1/4 gallon per minute per square foot of wetted surface impi

42、nging on the van body with a 30 mph wind and when transported on a TOFC railroad car during rain conditions, the precipitation, the equipment shall operate as specified herein. The safety characteristics of the van bodies shall. meet the following minimum requirements: Conform to DOT Federal Motor Vehicle

44、Safety Standards (WSS), 49CPR567 and 571. Conform to DOT Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FIESR), 49CFR325, 390, and 393. Conform to the California Vehicle Code. Conform to DOL OSHA requirements, 29CFH.926, based on an 8-hour shift . Incorporate human factors engineering characteristics or

45、use and operation by personnel ranging from the small man, clothed, through the large man, arctic clothed, per SAE J833 and 5925, Provide all walk, step, and handhold components per Result in furnishing material and componenta having a correct safety factor. Provide correct guarding, enclosing, and

46、insulating features for exposed components and systems, which are inherently hazardous or have high temperatures, high pressures, or high electrical voltage. Eliminate nonfunctional sharp edges, projecting points, and excessive lengths of fasteners. SAE 3185. 3,7 Ease of maintenance. All major assem

47、blies and installed attachments shall be accessible for maintenance, repair, and replacement without the removal. of other major assemblies and installed attachmenta. Covers or plates which must be removed for component adjustment, repair, replacement, or maintenance shall be equipped with removable

48、 fasteners. The configuration of the van bodies shall provide maximum accaasibility for removal of components. Where incorrect installation of an item could cause malfunction af that item or of the system in which it is installed, an unsymnetxical mounting means shall be provided or the mating parts

49、 shall be dowled or matchmarked.
