But in her new book Join the Club, Tina Rosenberg contends that peer pressure can also be a positive force through what she calls the social

Rosenberg, the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize, offers a host of examples of the social cure in action: In South Carolina, a state-sponsored antismoking program ca

4、lled Rage Against the Haze sets out to make cigarettes uncool. In South Africa, an HIV-prevention initiative known as loveLife recruits young people to promote safe sex among their peers. The idea seems promising, and Rosenberg is a perceptive observer. Her critique of the lameness of many pubic-hea

5、lth campaigns is spot-on: they fail to mobilize peer pressure for healthy habits, and they demonstrate a seriously flawed understanding of psychology. “Dare to be different, please don“t smoke!“ pleads one billboard campaign aimed at reducing smoking among teenagersteenagers, who desire nothing more

Rosenberg argues convincingly that public-health advocates ought to take a page from advertisers, so skilled at applying peer pressure.But on the general effectiveness of the social cure, Rosenberg is less persuasive. 18、 so persistently celebrates procreation, is it any wonder that admitting you regret having children is equivalent to admitting you support kitten-killing? It doesn“t seem quite fair, then, to compare the regrets of parents to the regrets of the childless. Unhappy parents rarely are provoked to wonde

19、r if they shouldn“t have had kids, but unhappy childless folks are bothered with the message that children are the single most important thing in the world: obviously their misery must be a direct result of the gaping baby-size holes in their lives. Of course, the image of parenthood that celebrity

20、magazines like Us Weekly and People present is hugely unrealistic, especially when the parents are single mothers like Bullock. According to several studies concluding that parents are less happy than childless couples, single parents are the least happy of all. No shock there, considering how much

21、work it is to raise a kid without a partner to lean on; yet to hear Sandra and Britney tell it, raising a kid on their “own“ (read: with round-the-clock help) is a piece of cake. It“s hard to imagine that many people are dumb enough to want children just because Reese and Angelina make it look so gl

22、amorous: most adults understand that a baby is not a haircut. But it“s interesting to wonder if the images we see every week of stress-free, happiness-enhancing parenthood aren“t in some small, subconscious way contributing to our own dissatisfactions with the actual experience, in the same way that

The court has ruled that police don“ t violate the Fourth Amendment when they go through the

44、 wallet or pocketbook of an arrestee without a warrant. But exploring one“ s smartphone is more like entering his or her home. A smartphone may contain an arrestee“ s reading history, financial history, medical history and comprehensive records of recent correspondence. The development of “cloud com

45、puting“, meanwhile, has made that exploration so much the easier. Americans should take steps to protect their digital privacy. But keeping sensitive information on these devices is increasingly a requirement of normal life. Citizens still have a right to expect private documents to remain private a

46、nd protected by the Constitution“ s prohibition on unreasonable searches. As so often is the case, stating that principle doesn “t ease the challenge of line-drawing. In many cases, it would not be overly burdensome for authorities to obtain a warrant to search through phone contents. They could sti

47、ll invalidate Fourth Amendment protections when facing severe, urgent circumstances, and they could take reasonable measures to ensure that phone data are not erased or altered while waiting for a warrant. The court, though, may want to allow room for police to cite situations where they are entitle

48、d to more freedom. But the justices should not swallow California“s argument whole. New, disruptive technology sometimes demands novel applications of the Constitution“s protections. Orin Kerr, a law professor, compares the explosion and accessibility of digital information in the 21st century with
