6、hat arefabricated and installed in accordance with ANSI/SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards Metaland Flexible.1.2 These requirements do not apply to aerosol duct sealants for use with factory made air ducts listedand labeled in accordance with UL 181, (including rigid fiberglass ducts, flexible
7、wire helix ducts, orspirally wound metal ducts not conforming to SMACNA requirements).1.3 These requirements do not apply to spray sealants intended to be used as a substitute for or tosupplement mechanical attachment.1.4 Aerosol duct sealants are used for the purpose of additional sealing of seams
8、and joints of sheetmetal air duct systems. These requirements are limited to application in ducts with individual openings nogreater than 5/8 in. diameter, and seam / joint openings no greater than 5/8 in. across.1.5 These requirements are intended to address performance characteristics of the spray
9、ed sealantrelative to not adversely affecting the sheet metal ducts to which they are applied.1.6 These requirements are not intended to address or rate the sealing efficacy of the duct sprayedsealant.1.7 Aerosol duct sealants are to be applied by trained professionals and specifically in accordance
10、 withaccompanying installation instructions.1.8 These requirements do not address the human health effects of the aerosol duct sealant.2 Glossary2.1 For the purposes of this outline the following definitions apply.2.2 CONTINUED EROSION Identified to be either a constant or increasing rate of erosion

12、y undated reference to a code or standard appearing in the requirements of this outline shall beinterpreted as referring to the latest edition of that code or standard.CONSTRUCTION5 General5.1 Oil based caulking and glazing compounds should not be used.PERFORMANCE6 Test for Surface Burning Character
13、istics6.1 Representative samples of the sprayed sealant shall be evaluated for surface burning characteristicsaccording to the requirements in 6.2 and 6.6.6.2 Tests for surface burning characteristics are to be conducted as specified in the Standard for Test forSurface Burning Characteristics of Bui
14、lding Materials, UL 723. For the purpose of establishing the flamespread and smoke developed indices, typically a minimum of three tests are to be conducted.6.3 The aerosol duct sealant shall be sprayed within a rectangular duct 18 gage sheet metal duct sectionmeasuring 24 inches (top and bottom) an
15、d 12 inches (sides). The top section shall be removable and ispermitted to be broken into 8 ft. sections. The top panel shall be randomly perforated with 1/16 inchdiameter holes that fully penetrate the sheet metal. The array of holes shall be 3 holes across the panelwidth, 6 inches from each end an
16、d one in the center. The three holes shall occur 12 inches on centeralong the length. The sprayed sealant shall be allowed to cure in accordance with the manufacturersinstruction. By weighing the top panel sections before and after application of the sealant, the applicationrate shall be determined.
17、6.4 The top panels with the sealant applied shall be tested in accordance with UL 723.6.5 A second test shall be repeated with the top panel randomly perforated with 1/2 inch diameter holes.A third test is then to be conducted on the worse case condition of tests 1 and 2.6.6 As an alternate to the r
18、epresentative application described in 6.3 6.5, the duct sealant is permittedto be applied to fiber cement board as described in UL 723 at the maximum intended application rate forall three tests.6.7 The materials shall have a flame-spread index of not over 25 without evidence of continuedprogressiv
19、e combustion and a smoke-developed index of not over 50.AUGUST 27, 2013 UL 1381 5UL COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL NOT AUTHORIZED FOR FURTHER REPRODUCTION ORDISTRIBUTION WITHOUT PERMISSION FROM UL7 Mold Growth and Humidity Test7.1 Three specimens are to be made by applying the duct sealant to a sterile petri
20、dish at the approximatemanufacturers recommended application rate. The specimens are to be dried at 73.4 3.6F (23 2C)and 50 5 percent relative humidity for the manufacturers recommended set time.7.2 Mold mycelia and spores from Chaetomium Globosium are to be applied to the sealant surface only.The s
21、pecimens are to be placed in a closed vessel in which an atmosphere saturated with water vapor ismaintained at room temperature under dark conditions. The specimens are to remain in this atmosphereuntil the maximum extent of growth has been demonstrated, or until the mold and spores havedisintegrate
22、d, but not less than 60 days.7.3 The specimens then are to be examined visually for extent of mold and for indications of deteriorationof the sealant specimens. The mold shall not have spread beyond the inoculated area, and no significantgrowth of mold shall be observed.8 Erosion Test8.1 General8.1.
23、1 Aerosol duct sealants shall not break away, crack, peel, flake off, or show evidence of delaminationor continued erosion when air is passed through typical sections at a velocity of two and one-half timesthe manufacturers rated velocity, and not less than 2500 feet per minute.8.2 Test installation
24、8.2.1 The aerosol duct sealant shall be sprayed within a representative 12 inch square 18 gage sheetmetal duct section. The duct shall have random perforations of ranging from 1/16 in. to 1/2 in. diameterholes that fully penetrate the sheet metal. The array of holes shall be 3 holes across the panel
