6、hat arefabricated and installed in accordance with ANSI/SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards Metaland Flexible.1.2 These requirements do not apply to aerosol duct sealants for use with factory made air ducts listedand labeled in accordance with UL 181, (including rigid fiberglass ducts, flexible

7、wire helix ducts, orspirally wound metal ducts not conforming to SMACNA requirements).1.3 These requirements do not apply to spray sealants intended to be used as a substitute for or tosupplement mechanical attachment.1.4 Aerosol duct sealants are used for the purpose of additional sealing of seams

8、and joints of sheetmetal air duct systems. These requirements are limited to application in ducts with individual openings nogreater than 5/8 in. diameter, and seam / joint openings no greater than 5/8 in. across.1.5 These requirements are intended to address performance characteristics of the spray

13、istics6.1 Representative samples of the sprayed sealant shall be evaluated for surface burning characteristicsaccording to the requirements in 6.2 and 6.6.6.2 Tests for surface burning characteristics are to be conducted as specified in the Standard for Test forSurface Burning Characteristics of Bui

14、lding Materials, UL 723. For the purpose of establishing the flamespread and smoke developed indices, typically a minimum of three tests are to be conducted.6.3 The aerosol duct sealant shall be sprayed within a rectangular duct 18 gage sheet metal duct sectionmeasuring 24 inches (top and bottom) an

15、d 12 inches (sides). The top section shall be removable and ispermitted to be broken into 8 ft. sections. The top panel shall be randomly perforated with 1/16 inchdiameter holes that fully penetrate the sheet metal. The array of holes shall be 3 holes across the panelwidth, 6 inches from each end an

16、d one in the center. The three holes shall occur 12 inches on centeralong the length. The sprayed sealant shall be allowed to cure in accordance with the manufacturersinstruction. By weighing the top panel sections before and after application of the sealant, the applicationrate shall be determined.

17、6.4 The top panels with the sealant applied shall be tested in accordance with UL 723.6.5 A second test shall be repeated with the top panel randomly perforated with 1/2 inch diameter holes.A third test is then to be conducted on the worse case condition of tests 1 and 2.6.6 As an alternate to the r

18、epresentative application described in 6.3 6.5, the duct sealant is permittedto be applied to fiber cement board as described in UL 723 at the maximum intended application rate forall three tests.6.7 The materials shall have a flame-spread index of not over 25 without evidence of continuedprogressiv

20、dish at the approximatemanufacturers recommended application rate. The specimens are to be dried at 73.4 3.6F (23 2C)and 50 5 percent relative humidity for the manufacturers recommended set time.7.2 Mold mycelia and spores from Chaetomium Globosium are to be applied to the sealant surface only.The s

21、pecimens are to be placed in a closed vessel in which an atmosphere saturated with water vapor ismaintained at room temperature under dark conditions. The specimens are to remain in this atmosphereuntil the maximum extent of growth has been demonstrated, or until the mold and spores havedisintegrate

22、d, but not less than 60 days.7.3 The specimens then are to be examined visually for extent of mold and for indications of deteriorationof the sealant specimens. The mold shall not have spread beyond the inoculated area, and no significantgrowth of mold shall be observed.8 Erosion Test8.1 General8.1.

23、1 Aerosol duct sealants shall not break away, crack, peel, flake off, or show evidence of delaminationor continued erosion when air is passed through typical sections at a velocity of two and one-half timesthe manufacturers rated velocity, and not less than 2500 feet per minute.8.2 Test installation

24、8.2.1 The aerosol duct sealant shall be sprayed within a representative 12 inch square 18 gage sheetmetal duct section. The duct shall have random perforations of ranging from 1/16 in. to 1/2 in. diameterholes that fully penetrate the sheet metal. The array of holes shall be 3 holes across the panel

25、 width, 6inches from each end and one in the center. The three holes shall occur 12 inches on center along thelength. These perforations are to be sprayed and sealed with the aerosol sealant in accordance with theaccompanying manufacturers installation instructions. The sprayed sealant shall be allo

26、wed to cure inaccordance with the manufacturers instruction.8.2.2 The duct sample is to be arranged in an L-shaped assembly as described in Figure 8.1, having alength of not less than 72 inches. The assembly is to be bent at a radius equivalent to the inside diameterof the duct to form the 90-degree

28、on piece of any intendedmaterial to provide for uniform air entry to the test sample. The fan is to have the capacity to provide amaximum velocity of two and one-half times the maximum velocity specified by the manufacturer, but notless than 2500 feet per minute of air at room temperature.8.2.4 The

29、air velocity for purposes of the test is to be measured by a pitot tube, or direct-readingvelometer, positioned in the center of the outlet end of the sample. Room air handled by the fan andranging in temperature between 15.6 and 37.8C (60 and 100F) shall be employed.8.2.5 The inlet of the air fan u

30、sed for the test is to be covered with a double layer of cheesecloth (14 to15 square yards per pound) and known to the trade as count of 32 by 28.8.2.6 A damper, when employed for regulating velocity in the system, is to be located between the screenand the fan or between the fan and the inlet of th

31、e test sample.8.2.7 A collecting screen consisting of a double layer of cheesecloth, as specified in 8.2.5, stretched tauton a frame sized to provide for an area not less than five times the inside cross-sectional area of the testsample, is to be located 1 foot from the outlet end of the test sample

33、not more than 24 hours. The collection screen then is to be placed in position.8.3.2 The test then is to proceed at test velocity and continued for a period of 4 hours. The collectingscreen is to be examined for macroscopic particles at the end of each hour during the test period by tapingthe screen

34、 with the adhesive side of transparent tape, or tapes, in order to remove and record any erodedparticles.9 Burning Test9.1 Sheet steel air ducts, once sealed or coated with the aerosol duct sealant, shall not continue to burnprogressively.9.2 Three samples shall be prepared by spraying the aerosol d

35、uct sealant within a representative 12 inchsquare 18 gage sheet metal duct section. The duct section shall be 3 feet in length.9.3 The duct shall have random perforations ranging from 1/16 in. to 1/2 in. diameter holes penetratingcompletely through the duct. These perforations are to be sprayed and

36、sealed with the aerosol sealant inaccordance with the accompanying manufacturers installation instructions. The sprayed sealant shall beallowed to cure in accordance with the manufacturers instruction. As an alternate to the representativeapplication the duct sealant is permitted to be applied to du

37、ct sections with no perforations at themaximum intended application rate.9.4 The ignition source apparatus to be employed consists of a Bunsen burner with a 3/8-inch diametertube and means for controlling the primary air and gas input, a support for the burner, a stopwatch or othertiming device, and

38、 a supply of untreated surgical cotton. The Bunsen burner is to be supported and heldin place by means of a burner stand, ring stand with clamps or an equivalent type of mechanical support.The gas used is to be a minimum CP grade or purer propane (bottled) gas having a heating value in therange of 2

39、490 - 2510 Btu per cubic foot. The gas bottle is to have a regulator and a valve located betweenthe regulator and the burner. The test stand is to be similar to that illustrated in Figure 9.1. The samplesare to be supported by the test stand as illustrated in Figures 9.2 9.4. When evaluating the int

40、eriorsurface of the sample in the horizontal and 45 degree orientations, the sample is to be secured to the teststand support rods using three wire ties. 43、,one in the Vertical position (see Figure 9.3), and one in the Interior 45-degree position (see Figure 9.4).Prior to the application of the burner to the sample, the burner is to be adjusted to produce a flame 2-1/2inches high. The air and fuel input are to be adjusted such that the flame has equal

44、parts of blue andyellow. The valve then is to be turned off and the burner positioned such that 1-1/4 inches of the test flameimpinges the test sample 3 inches from the end of the sample. See Figures 9.2 9.4. The valve then isto be turned on and the flame ignited.9.6 The inside surface of three samp

45、les oriented in the three positions is to be exposed to the flame for1 minute and then the flame is to be withdrawn. When flaming or glowing combustion of the sampleceases 60 seconds or less after removal of the test flame, the test flame is to be reapplied at the sameplace for 1 minute immediately

46、after flaming or glowing combustion of the sample stops. The test flameagain is to be withdrawn and the duration of flaming or glowing combustion of the sample noted. Duringthe test of an individual sample, the original size and characteristic of the test flame is not to be changed.9.7 The duration

47、of flaming or glowing of any sample after withdrawal of the test flame is not to exceed60 seconds, and flaming or glowing is not to travel to the end of the sample farthest from the point ofapplication of the test flame.10 Leakage Reduction Test10.1 Aerosol duct sealants shall be determined to reduc

48、e leakage when examined in accordance with anaccelerated aging test method. Except for as shown in 10.2 through 10.4, the leakage reduction testapparatus, test arrangement, and method shall be in accordance with ASTM E2342, Standard TestMethod for Durability Testing of Duct Sealants.10.2 The unseale

49、d test section shall be constructed and connected to the test section leakagemeasurement device as described by ASTM E2342. Q unsealed within the acceptable range shall bedetermined based on the average of three tests.10.3 The aerosol duct sealant shall be sprayed to seal the test duct section in accordance with themanufacturers accompanying installation instructions and at the minimum (or recommended) applicationrate.
