Scope*1.1 This test method covers the procedure fo
3、r testing bothtreated and untreated laboratory compacted soils or aggregateswith the stabilometer and expansion pressure devices to obtainresults indicative of performance when placed in the base,subbase, or subgrade of a road subjected to traffic.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded
4、 as thestandard. However, use of equipment manufactured to bereadable in inch-pound units only should not be considered asnon-conformance to the test method. Many stabilometers andexpansion pressure devices are manufactured to be readable ininch-pound units only.1.3 All observed and calculated value
5、s shall conform to theguidelines for significant digits and rounding established inPractice D6026.1.3.1 For purposes of comparing measured or calculatedvalue(s) with specified limits, the measured or calculatedvalue(s) shall be rounded to the nearest decimal or significantdigits in the specified lim
6、its.1.3.2 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded or calculated, in this standard are regarded as theindustry standard. In addition, they are representative of thesignificant digits that generally should be retained. The proce-dures used do not consider material variation, pur
7、pose forobtaining the data, special purpose studies, or any consider-ations for the users objectives; and it is common practice toincrease or reduce significant digits of reported data to becommensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scopeof this standard to consider significant digits

Significance and Use4.1 This test method is used to measure the potentia
16、lstrength of subgrade, subbase, and base course materials foruse in road and airfield pavements. The R-value is used bysome agencies as criteria for acceptance of aggregates for basecourse and bituminous courses.4.2 The expansion pressure testing has been used in con-junction with the R-value test t
17、o determine cover requirements(thickness) and construction controls to reduce pavementdistortion from expansive subgrade soils.NOTE 1The quality of the result produced by this standard isdependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and thesuitability of the equipment and facilities us
18、ed. Agencies that meet thecriteria of Practice D3740 are generally considered capable of competentand objective testing/sampling/inspection/etc. Users of this test methodare cautioned that compliance with Practice D3740 does not in itselfensure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many facto
19、rs; PracticeD3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors.5. Apparatus5.1 Kneading Compactor, capable of applying an averagecontact pressure of 24106 110 kPa (350 6 16 psi) to thetamper foot shown in Fig. 1 and with provisions for maintain-ing this pressure during changes in sample heig
20、ht. The load-time trace shall be free of “chatter” or evidence of impact-associated changes in slope. The rise time for application offoot pressure, in the range from 240 to 2070 kPa (35 to 300psi), shall not be less than 0.07 nor more than 0.20 s. The dwelltime, measured at 300 psi foot pressure, s
21、hall not be less than0.15 nor more than 0.45 s. The pressure-release or removaltime shall not be greater than 0.60 s.5.1.1 The compactor shall include a counter or timer formeasuring the number of tamps applied to a specimen and amold holder, for use in compacting specimens, that rotatesequally betw
22、een tamps to give 5 to 7 tamps per revolution ofthe mold. The holder shall firmly restrain the mold duringcompaction. The base of the mold holder shall have a metalplate 100.8. (33132 in mm) in diameter and 12.7 mm (0.5 in.)high to which is cemented a rubber disk having a diameter of100.0 mm (31516
23、in.) and a height of 3.2 mm. (18 in). The plateshall be an integral part of the base of the mold holder. Thecompactor shall also include a trough for feeding the sampleinto the mold in 20 increments (Fig. 2). Troughs with asemicircular cross section of 39 cm2(6 in.3) in area and 50.8 cm(20 in.) long
24、 have proven satisfactory.5.2 Compression Testing Machine, with a minimum capac-ity of 45 kN(10 000 lbf ) and satisfying the requirements ofPractices E4.5.3 Mold, 101.6 6 0.05 mm (4 6 0.002 in.) inside diameterby 127 6 0.20 mm (5 6 0.008 in.) high.
