Terminology3.1 DefinitionsTerminology C168 shall app
7、ly to this prac-tice.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 corrosive ionschloride ion, fluoride ion, and othervarieties of acids and ionic chemical contaminates.3.2.2 shipmentthat material being received from the samesource of manufacture on the same day or each carload,whichever
8、is smaller.3.2.3 water damagedamage caused by water seeping intocartons of insulation or soaking into the insulation that is leftexposed to the weather, both of which increase the possibilitiesof absorption of contaminates.3.2.4 weathertightprotected from rain and wind. A dry,sheltered condition whe
9、rein reasonable precautions are taken toprevent indiscriminate water from coming in contact with theinsulation.4. Significance and Use4.1 Insulations that are used as a part of the thermalinsulation system in contact with austenitic stainless steelshave the potential to become contaminated with wate
10、r solublecorrosive ions which, in turn, if permitted to reach the stainlesssteel surface, are possible to contribute to external stresscorrosion cracking (ESCC). Therefore, it is important to reducethe exposure of such insulating materials to water-solublecorrosive ion compounds at all stages of man
11、ufacture,handling, shipping, storage, and application. Duringmanufacture, precautions shall be taken to minimize watersoluble corrosive ion content, both in the material and assurface contamination. Once the manufacture is complete, caremust be exercised during handling, transporting, shipping,stora
12、ge, receiving, and application to avoid contamination withcorrosive ions that can be transported by water through theinsulation materials onto the stainless steel surface. Thispractice presents criteria which, if followed, will minimize therisks of ESCC associated with the application of insulationm
13、aterials. It must be emphasized, however, that because of themany variable factors present, complete freedom from ESCCcan not be assured under all circumstances, even when follow-ing the guidance of this practice.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C16 on ThermalInsulation and

United States14.2 Continued protection of the insulation and the stainlesssteel surface from moisture and contamination after the insu-lation system is installed and over its entire service life is ofsignificant importance. In-service contamination has the poten-tial to occur from many sources;
17、 for example, from airbornecontaminates, rain or salt spray, periodic fire sprinkler systemtests, wash-downs, or process leakage. Weather barrier jacket-ing systems and proper application shall be chosen to providelong-term protection in the intended use environment.4.3 The entire insulation system
18、shall be periodically in-spected and maintained. Insulation that is suspected of con-tamination shall be retested or immediately replaced. Washdown of insulated pipe and equipment shall be avoided.Whenever possible, protective coatings or finishes shall beapplied directly to the stainless steel surf
19、ace as the primarysource of corrosion protection.5. General5.1 Only materials that have been tested and qualified (seeNote 1) shall be used as a surface treatment or as a part of thethermal insulation system applied to austenitic stainless steel.Requirements for preproduction or qualification testin
20、g andsubsequent lot testing by the manufacturer or seller shall bespecified by the purchaser when ordering.NOTE 1For example, thermal insulation shall be tested in confor-mance to Specification C795 using Test Method C692 and Test MethodC871.5.2 Where possible, qualified and unqualified materialssha
21、ll be kept physically segregated. Where conditions make itnecessary to have both qualified and unqualified materials ofthe same type at the job site, storage area, or in the sameshipment, all qualified materials must be clearly identifiablefrom unqualified materials.
