Terminology3.1 For definitions of terms used in this guide, see Ter
7、mi-nology D 653.4. Significance and Use4.1 Rock used for erosion control may consist of severaltypes, depending on potential use. One type may be armorstone weighing from one to three tons or breakwater stoneweighing three to twenty tons placed along shorelines or injetties to protect the shoreline
8、from erosion due to the action oflarge waves. Another type may be riprap usually weighing lessthan a ton and placed along river banks or on the slopes ofdams to prevent erosion due to run-off, wave action orstream-flow. A third type may be gabion-fill weighing less than22 kg (50 lb) and placed in ba
9、skets of wire or other suitablematerial. These baskets are then tied together to form anintegral structure designed to resist erosion along stream banksand around bridge piers. No matter what form it takes, rock forerosion control consists of individual pieces of natural stone.The ability of these i
10、ndividual pieces of stone to resistdeterioration due to weathering action affects the stability ofthe integral placement of rock for erosion control and hence,the stability of construction projects, shorelines, and stream-banks.4.2 This test method is designed to determine the effects onthe individu
11、al pieces of rock for erosion control of wetting anddrying action and the resistance of the rock to deterioration.This test method was developed to be used in conjunction withadditional test methods listed in Practice D 4992. This testmethod does not provide an absolute value but rather anindication
12、 of the resistance to wetting and drying; therefore, theresults of this test method are not to be used as the sole basisfor the determination of rock durability.NOTE 1The quality of the result produced by this standard isdependant upon the competence of the personnel performing it, and thesuitabilit
13、y of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet thecriteria of Practice D 3740 are generally considered capable of competentand objective testing and sampling. Users of this standard are cautionedthat compliance with Practice D 3740 does not in itself assure reliableresults. Reliable resu
14、lts depend on many factors; Practice D 3740 providesa means of evaluation some of those factors.5. Apparatus5.1 Diameter Circular Diamond Saw, 350-mm (14-in.)capable of sawing rock, of the type required for PracticeD 5121.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D18 on Soil andR

These containers must be non-reactive andunbreakable.5.3 Oven, capable of drying the specimen to a constant massat a temperature of 110 6 5C (230 6 9F).5.4 Drying Apparatus
18、, such as infra-red heat lamps (150 W)or oven set at 65 6 5C (150 6 9F).5.5 Stereomicroscope, or other suitable magnifying devicecapable of at least 203 magnification will be required forexamination of the specimen prior to and after testing.5.6 Balance, capable of determining the mass of the speci-
19、men to the nearest 0.1 % of the total mass in accordance withSpecification D 4753 will be required.5.7 Camera, capable of producing good quality, color pho-tographs will be required for “before” and “after” photographs.6. Sampling, Test Specimens, and Test Units6.1 The number and variety of samples
20、from a source willbe dependent on the geological complexity of that source andwill be left to the judgment of the individual doing thesampling; however, in no case shall the number of samples beless than five per lithologic (rock) unit. Each piece will be of asize such that testing may proceed witho
21、ut further mechanicalcrushing; however, the pieces chosen shall be as large as thetesting laboratory can handle but in no case shall the specimenbe less than 125 mm (5 in.) on a side. In all cases, the samplewill be representative of the various rock types found at thesource.7. Preparation of Test S
22、pecimens7.1 Saw each specimen in accordance with Practice D 5121.Each specimen will be 65 6 5 mm (2.5 6 0.25 in.) thick andcut normal to bedding or any potential planes of weakness thatmay be observed in the samples. In no case will the size of theslab be less than 125 mm (5 in.) on a side, excludin
