Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 For common definitions of terms in this standard, referto Terminology D 653.3.1.2 peata naturally-occurring highly organic substancederived primarily from plant materials. Peat is distinguishedfrom other organic soil materials by its lowe
7、r ash content (lessthan 25 % ash by dry weight (see Test Methods D 2974), andfrom other phytogenic material of higher rank (that is, lignitecoal) by its lower calorific value on a water saturated basis.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 absorbencythe maximum amount of moisture
8、(byweight) that can be held by the peat. This is expressed in termsof the water-holding capacity as measured using Test MethodD 2980.3.2.2 aciditythis is expressed as the pH of the peat inwater as measured using Test Method D 2976.3.2.3 ash contentthe percentage by dry weight of materialremaining af
9、ter the oven dry peat is burned, using the methodsdescribed in Test Methods D 2974.3.2.4 botanical compositionthe dominant plant genus,genera, or informal plant group identified by visual inspectionas comprising a portion of the fiber in the peat.3.2.5 fiber contentthe dry weight of fibers remaining
10、 on a100 mesh sieve after wet sieving. Fiber content is expressed asa percentage of the original dry weight, using the methoddescribed in Test Method D 1997.4. Significance and Use4.1 The purpose of this classification is to standardize thenaming of peat materials so that the peat-producer can bette
11、ridentify the product and the peat-consumer better select peatmaterials to meet requirements. This system may also be usedfor peat resource evaluations, environmental impact reports,and preliminary engineering studies. The parameters selectedfor use in this classification are ones which have beendet
12、ermined to relate to the agricultural/horticultural, geotech-nical, and energy uses of peats.NOTE 1The quality of the results produced by this standard isdependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and thesuitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet thecriteri
13、a of Practice D 3740 are generally considered capable of competentand objective testing/sampling/inspection/and the like.
