9、r doesnot exceed 0.40 %; or when the maximum content specified forany of the following elements does not exceed these percent-ages: manganese 1.65, silicon 0.60, or copper 0.60.3.1.1.1 DiscussionIn all carbon steels small quantities ofcertain residual elements unavoidably retained from raw ma-terial
10、s are sometimes found that are not specified or required,such as copper, nickel, molybdenum, chromium, etc. Theseelements are considered as incidental and are not formallydetermined or reported. Elements may be specified to improvemachinability of carbon steels such as sulfur and lead.3.1.2 coarse r
11、ound wirefrom 0.035 to 0.999 in. in diam-eter, inclusive, wire that is produced from hot-rolled wire rodsor hot-rolled coiled bars by one or more cold reductionsprimarily for the purpose of obtaining a desired size withdimensional accuracy, surface finish, and mechanical proper-ties. By varying the
12、amount of cold reduction and other wiremill practices, including thermal treatment, a wide diversity ofmechanical properties and finishes are made available.3.1.2.1 DiscussionCoarse round wire is designated bySteel Wire Gauge numbers, common fractions, or decimal partsof an inch. The Steel Wire Gaug

18、roperties of the wire, especially the tensilestrength. The straightening operation may also induce changesin the diameter of the wire. The extent of the changes in theproperties of the wire after cold straightening depends upon thekind of wire and also on the normal variations in the adjust-ments of
19、 the straightening equipment. It is therefore notpossible to forecast the properties of straightened and cut wireand each kind of wire needs individual consideration. In mostcases, the end use of straightened and cut wire is not seriouslyinfluenced by these changes.3.1.4 wire rodsrods that are hot r
20、olled from billets to anapproximate round cross section into coils of one continuouslength. Rods are not comparable to hot-rolled bars in accuracyof cross section or surface finish and as a semifinished productare intended primarily for the manufacture of wire.3.1.4.1 DiscussionRod sizes from732 to4
21、764 in. in diam-eter, inclusive, are designated by fractions or decimal parts ofan inch as shown in Table 2.4.
