7、nt of volatile matter and of resin in synthetic resin-impregnated glass fabric. In the preparation of this method consideration has also been given to the method described in BS4584-11. This method is suitable for testing the product known as “pre-impregnated” glass fabric, i.e.synthetic resin-impre
8、gnated glass fabric that can be purchased as such and used for the manufacture of mouldings. It is not suitable for testing either glass fabrics that are impregnated with silicone resins or materials containing a filler that loses mass at570 C. NOTEResults obtained by this method on fabric which has
9、 not been desized will represent both resin content and size content. WARNING NOTE. This method does not necessarily detail all the precautions necessary to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act1974. Attention should be paid to any appropriate safety precautions, and the me
10、thod should only be operated by trained personnel. 1 Scope This method describes a procedure for determining the volatile matter and resin content of synthetic resin-impregnated textile glass fabric. 2 References The following standards publications are referred to in this method. BS 2648, Performan
11、ce requirements for electrically-heated laboratory drying ovens. BS 4244, Porcelain and silica crucibles. BS 4584, Metal-clad base materials for printed circuits Part 11: Bonding sheet material for use in the fabrication of multilayer printed boards . 3 Principle Volatile matter. The volatile matter
12、 of the material is determined by heating three test pieces at a comparatively low temperature and calculating the mean loss in mass. Resin content. The resin content of the material is determined by heating a further three test pieces at550 20 C, calculating the loss in mass as percentages, subtrac
13、ting the volatile matter from these latter values and then calculating the mean of the three results. 4 Apparatus The following apparatus is required. 4.1 Crucibles, silica or porcelain of appropriate size complying with the requirements of BS4244. 4.2 Drying oven with circulating fan, complying wit
14、h the requirements of BS2648. 4.3 Drip tray of convenient size. 4.4 Muffle furnace 5 Test pieces Use six test pieces 100 10 mm square, cut from the fabric as specified in the relevant British Standard for the fabric. If no British Standard exists and the fabric is in the form of of a roll, take two
15、sets of three pieces from positions along a line normal to the warp of the fabric, with the diagonals of the test pieces parallel to the warp and weft threads. Each set shall comprise one piece from the centre of the roll and the other two from positions on opposite edges of the roll with their oute
16、r extremities50 25mm from each edge or selvedge. Remove all loose particles and projecting fibres from the test pieces. 6 Procedure NOTEIf it is not required to determine variations across the material under test, it is permissible to treat each set of three test pieces as a single test portion. If
17、this is done, the calculations given in clause7 and the test report (see clause8) should be amended accordingly. 6.1 Determination of volatile matter. Weigh separately, to the nearest0.001g, three of the test pieces and suspend them in the oven maintained at the appropriate temperature as follows: a
