Summary of Test Method3.1 The rosin acids content is determined using either the mo

7、dified potentiometric Wolfe Method or the modified indicatorWolfe Method described in Test Methods D1240. Rosin acids are calculated as abietic acid.3.2 The acid number is determined by either the potentiometric or the indicator method in accordance with Test Methods D465.3.3 The unsaponifiable matt

8、er is determined in accordance with the methods described in Test Method D1065.3.4 The fatty acids are calculated by two methods.3.4.1 For materials with a fatty acid content less than 5 %, fatty acid content is calculated from the rosin acids content and theacid number.3.4.2 For materials with a fa

9、tty acid content greater than 5 %, fatty acid content is calculated from the rosin acids andunsaponifiables content.3.5 The same method for end point detection, either potentiometric or indicator, should be used for acid number,unsaponifiables, and rosin acids content determination, in order to avoi

10、d slight variables that might occur.3.6 Since the fatty acids remaining in tall oil rosin, tall oil, and other naval storespine chemical products consist of oleic acidwith varying amounts of other saturated and unsaturated acids, it has become customary to calculate and report the fatty acidcontent

Significance and Use4.1 These test methods are designed to broaden the scope of the previous edition of these test methods by the inclusion of talloil as a test material. Test Methods D803 currently includes methods for the determin

16、ation of the rosin acid and fatty acid contentof crude tall oil. Test Methods D803 references Test Method D1585.4.2 Rosin and tall oil are composed primarily of rosin acids and fatty acids, and the measurement of these components isimportant in establishing the composition of these materials.5. Puri

17、ty of Reagents5.1 Reagent grade chemicals shall be used in all tests. Unless otherwise indicated, it is intended that all reagents shall conformto the specifications of the Committee on Analytical Reagents of the American Chemical Society, where such specifications areavailable.3 Other grades may be

18、 used, provided it is first ascertained that the reagent is of sufficiently high purity to permit its usewithout lessening the accuracy of the determination.5.2 Unless otherwise indicated, references to water shall be understood to mean deionized or distilled water.6. Preparation of Sample6.1 Homoge

19、neous liquid materials may be used without further preparation.6.2 Heat nonhomogeneous liquid materials until they are homogeneous, then take a portion for analysis.6.3 Solid samples are subject to surface oxidation which may affect the results. Prepare the sample for analysis by chippingsmall piece

20、s from a freshly exposed surface of a lump or lumps and crush to a coarse powder to facilitate weighing and solution.Prepare fresh on the same day, prior to weighing, in order to avoid changes due to surface oxidation of crushed rosin on exposureto the air.PERCENT ROSIN ACID7. Precision and Bias412.1 Interlaboratory Test ProgramInterlaboratory Test ProgramAn An interlaboratory study of the fatty acid content ofthree substances, tall oil fatty acids, distilled tall oil, and rosin, was run in 1994. Each of 14 laboratories tested each of the t

The design of the experiment, similar to that of Practice E691 and a within-between analysis of the data are given inASTM Research Report RR:D01-1088RR: D01-108812.2 Test ResultTest ResultThe The precision information given below for the fatty acid content of naval storespinechemical

29、products is for the comparison of two test results, each of which is the average of three test determinations as follows:12.2.1 Repeatability Limit, Repeatability Limit,95 % (within laboratory) = 0.6 %.12.2.2 Reproducibility Limit, Reproducibility Limit,95 % (between laboratories) = 1.9 %.12.3 These

30、 terms (repeatability limit and reproducibility limit) are used as specified in Practice E177.
