Scope1.1 This specification covers the material characteristics,physical requirements, and sampling appropriate to the selec-tion of travertine for gen

3、eral building and structural purposes.Refer to Guides C1242 and C1528 for the appropriate selectionand use of travertine dimension stone.1.2 Dimension travertine shall include stone that is sawed,cut, split, or otherwise finished or shaped and shall specificallyexclude molded, cast, or otherwise art

4、ificially aggregated unitscomposed of fragments, and also crushed and broken stone.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of

Terminology3.1 All definitions are in accordance with TerminologyC119.3.2 Definitions:3.2.1 fleuri-cu

8、t (cross-cut), adjdescribes stone that is cutparallel to the natural veining.3.2.2 vein-cut, adjdescribes stone that is cut perpendicu-lar to the natural veining.4. Physical Properties4.1 Travertine supplied under this specification shall con-form to the physical requirements prescribed in Table 1.4

9、.2 Travertine shall be free of minerals that may causeobjectionable staining under normal environments of use.4.3 Voids in travertine are a natural characteristic of thematerial and shall be considered in assessing the permissiblenatural variations suitable for a particular application.4.3.1 Some tr

10、avertines may not be suitable for exterior usein areas subject to frequent freeze-thaw cycles.4.3.2 Travertine that is fleuri-cut (cross-cut) rather thanvein-cut can be expected to experience certain problems,because some areas of the exposed surface will consist of onlya thin layer of stone that co

11、vers a void in the stone.4.4 The desired color and texture, with their permissiblenatural variations in material characteristics for material to beproduced for the project, shall be established by controlsamples. Representative samples shall be selected prior toproduction by viewing a sufficient num

12、ber of samples thatshow the complete range of variations in color and texture ofthe travertine specified.5. Sampling5.1 Samples, if required, for testing to determine the char-acteristics and physical properties shall be representative of thetravertine to be used.1This specification is under the jur

23、lor and design effects, there should be no greater difference than five points inabrasion resistance.BThe supplier of the No. 60 Alundum abrasive, Norton, has indicated that the formula for Norton treatment 138S has been changed. The new abrasive is currently moreaggressive, resulting in lower abras

24、ion resistance values (Ha) than when the standard was initially established. As such, care should be taken when interpreting Havaluesfrom tests using the new abrasive, particularly with regard to currentASTM stone standard specification requirements for abrasion resistance, which were developed whenthe original abrasive was still in use.CIt is not necessary to perform both tests.
