Europe has a population of 800 million of whom over 1 00 mil

15、lion are children and elderly people and 50 million are declared asd isabled (the latter figure includes many people who are alsoe lderly). The European U nion h as 77 million elderly people and 43 million people registered as d isabled. These consumers with special needs constitute a major (and gro

16、wing) part of the populationw ho daily come into contact with the numerous barriers that exist in and outside of buildings. This E uropean guidance document aims to help d esigners, specifiers and building managers or owners to identifya nd include the needs of children, elderly and disabled persons

17、, by enabling people with low physical strength, dexteritya nd manipulativei mpairment, to be able to open, close and lock doors. It includes general g uidelines f or s electing h ardware products a nd guid elines f or p roduct specifications. It also includes the following annexes: Annex A - Guidel

18、ines for suitability assessment of hardware products ; Annex B Guidelines for hardware product specification. Ultimately the intention of t his g uidance document is t o make e xisting hardware p roducts a nd standards more suitable with regard to their use by children, the eld erly and disabled. NO

20、r disability. Doors should be of a minimum clear opening width to accommodate wheelchairs and should be easyt o use. For example, this requires low friction hinges and carefully selected door controls, possiblyu sing l ow e nergy door o perators, p owered or a utomatic o peratorso r electromagnetic

21、devices . The correct choice of door furniture with easy-to-use locking systems and good signage all add up to an acceptable combination. Generally, this i s no m ore thanw ould b e asked of a ny r esponsible specification. This guide is intended to enable installers to correctly follow building spe

22、cifications and to make sure that buildings are correctly equipped for their intended use. One of the main challenges to specifiers , architects, manufacturers and builders is to ensure that the specification, design and construction do not result i n the environment of a n elderly or d isabled pers

23、on appearing different from the rest of the community . This European guidance document is people-based and it is essential that specifiers r ecognize that the individual needs of users can vary. Users should be consulted frequentlyi n the specification and installation processes. The specification

24、should recognize that buildings are often occupied by non- disabled and younger people, as well as elderly and disabled people. Similarly, these members of the community need to move freely and safely in the wider environment. Where dimensions/measurements are given for guidance purposes, they are s

25、ubject to the tolerances incorporated i n any appropriatep roduct or c onstruction s tandard. N ational r egulations,w here applicable, should take precedence. It is recognized that local regulations and certain types of door construction (such asa luminium)m ay prevent specifiers from achieving all

26、 the recommendations in this do cument. In these circumstances, the needs of the building occupants should be considered and the best possible compromise should be achieved . 29、ion into the design of buildings willm ake themm ore safe, secure and convenient for the occupants in clusive of children, elderly and disabled people to use (“design for all“). Although it isi ntended for people with reduced physical and sensorial capabilities, it mayn ot cover all specific individ

30、ual needs. For example, it may not cover all needs of blind people or those not able to move unassisted. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. 36、re products 5.1 General The objectivew ith this parto f the document is to help specifiers assess what the application requires. It provides guidelines for selecting hardware products. Specifiers should be aware that building hardware standards cover onlyh ardware products and do not specify maximum

37、m anual operating forces for the complete door. The door manufacturers should inform the market about the test r e sults f or t he f orces to operate the hardware in t heir d oor construction, for example to open/close doors and to engage/release and lock/unlock the hardware using a key or handle. 5

38、.2 Buildingc ategory For selecting hardware products, specifiers should define the purpose of the building such as: residential, commercial, industrial, public building, etc.; location of the door: internal door, external door ; alternative use, day and night use, use byv arious groups, etc . 5.3P u

39、rpose of the door For selecting hardware products, specifiers should define the purpose of the door, such as: f ire/smoker esistance; b urglar resistance; a ccess/egress/flow control; thermal insulation, energy saving, etc.; wind/water penetration resistance; n oiser eduction; s mell reduction ; l i

40、ght reduction. 5.4I nterface between users and door For selecting hardware products, specifiers should define the interface betweenu sers and the door . For selecting hardware p r oducts, specifiers should also define the limitation on ability to operate the hardware, such as : height/reach restriction (applies mainlyt o children) ; s trength/grip restriction; mental restriction (relates to “mental age”); o ne hand only ; n o hands ; s ig

42、ht impairment; h earing impairment; confined to wheelchair (manually operated or powered). 5.5 Product functions Although t he e rgonomic f unctioni s the primary concern for children, elderlya nd d isabled people (C.E.D.), other f unctions a re p articularly important and should also b e provided b

43、 y the products t o meet other users needs with regards to: convenience : ergonomics, usage and durability, privacy, aesthetic design, see-through, etc.; safety : escape and ability to release in case of emergency and panic situations, self closing and safety in case of fire, safety in use or risk o

44、 f injury, personal safety; security: protection a gainst b urglaryo ra ttack, f rom inside/both sides, access/flow c ontrol, protection against vandalism, abuse, etc . 5.6E conomic aspects When considering economic aspects of a product specification, it is important to take into account the followi

45、ngs factors : cost of product; cost of installation ; cost ofm aintenance (all costs to maintain intended product functions). Where conflicting aspects m ay a ffect a p roduct specification, alternative solutions s hould be considered according to a priorityo rder. As an example, one may consider th
