6、nce of hipand ridge shingles. The fire resistance test method portion of these requirements is intended to evaluatethe performance of hip and ridge shingles exposed to fire sources exterior to a building. The windresistance test method portion of these requirements is intended to evaluate hip and ri
7、dge shingles abilityto resist damage when subjected to winds in the Beaufort Scale No. 10 range 55-63 mph (88-101K/h).1.2 Class A hip and ridge shingles are effective against severe fire test exposures. Under suchexposures, shingles of this class are not readily flammable, afford a fairly high degre
8、e of fire protection tothe roof deck, do not sip from position, and are not expected to produce flying brands.1.3 Class B hip and ridge shingles are effective against moderate fire test exposures. Under suchexposures, shingles of this class are not readily flammable, afford a moderate degree of fire
9、 protection tothe roof deck, do not slip from position, and are not expected to produce flying brands.1.4 Class C hip and ridge shingles are effective against light fire test exposures. Under such exposures,shingles of this class are not readily flammable, afford a measurable degree of fire protecti
10、on to the roofdeck, do not slip from position, and are not expected to produce flying brands.1.5 Fire tests conducted in accordance with these requirements are intended to demonstrate theperformance of roof coverings during the types and periods of exposure involved, but are not intended todetermine
11、 the acceptability of roof coverings for use after fire.1.6 Hip and ridge shingles complying with the requirements for wind resistance are not expected towithstand the wind forces of tornadoes, cyclones, or hurricanes.1.7 Hip and ridge shingles are required to comply also with the requirements for c
12、onstruction, materialspecifications, and performance as applicable to specific types, designs, sizes, and arrangements. Allsuch applicable additional requirements are not considered to be within the scope of these requirementsfor fire and wind tests, but are included in the applicable standards cove
13、ring the material in question.1.8 A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or differentfrom those covered by the requirements in this Outline, and that involves a risk of fire or of electric shockor injury to persons shall be evaluated using the approp
14、riate additional component and end-productrequirements to maintain the level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of this Outline. A productwhose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific requirements orprovisions of this Outline does not comply
15、 with this Outline. Values in parentheses are explanatory orapproximate information.PERFORMANCE3 General3.1 Representative samples of hip and ridge shingles are to be subjected to two fire tests and two windtests.4 Preparation
17、of Samples4.1 Fire test samples4.1.1 Fire test deck construction and conditioning4.1.1.1 Representative samples of hip and ridge shingles are to be applied, as described in 4.1.2,Application of shingles, to test decks constructed as specified in 4.1.1.2.4.1.1.2 The fire test deck is to consist of pl
18、ywood fastened to trade size 2- by 4-inch nominal 1-1/2 by3-1/2 inches (38.1 by 89 mm) battens. The battens are to be placed along each side of the test deck,with the long dimension of the battens perpendicular to the plywood, leaving a 1-3/4 inch (44.4 mm)overhang of the plywood on one end. Additio
19、nal battens, perpendicular to the two battens along each sideof the deck, are to be used when required for additional support. The test deck dimensions are as follows:a) Class A shingles test deck 40 inches (1.02 m) wide by 8 feet (2.4 m) longb) Class B shingles test deck 40 inches (1.02 m) wide by
20、9 feet (2.7 m) longc) Class C shingles test deck 40 inches (1.02 m) wide by 13 feet (3.9 m) long4.1.2 Application of shingles4.1.2.1 General4.1.2.1.1 Shingles of the same composition and rating as the hip and ridge shingles to be evaluated areto be applied to the test deck in accordance with the ins
21、tallation instructions. The long dimension of theshingles is to be parallel with the long dimension of the test deck and applied symmetrically about thecenter of the deck so that headlap portions of the shingles meet at or close to the center of the deck.There is to be a 1 inch (25.4 mm) overhang at
22、 the leading edge. The hip and ridge shingles are then tobe laid flat and applied down the center of the deck. The application is to be in accordance with theinstallation instructions, such that specified exposures are maintained and, where applicable, allinterlocking mechanisms are in place.DECEMBE
