、on of the Furniture and Household Equipment Standards Committee. BS 4737-5 provides definitions for terms used in the intruder alarm industry and symbols for use in diagrams of alarm systems, with the objective of reducing confusion and misunderstanding in documents relating to intruder alarm instal
、lations. This Section of BS4737 gives the symbols to be used when indicating on a diagram the type, position and/or interconnection of the component parts of an installed intruder alarm system. BS 4737 is being revised and published in Parts as follows: Part 1: Specification for installed systems wi
、th local audible and/or remote signalling; Part 2: Specification for installed systems for deliberate operation; Part 3: Specification for components (incorporating a revision of the existing Sections 3.1 to 3.14 of BS4737); Part 4: Codes of practice; Part 5: Terms and symbols; Section 5.1: Glossary

Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity
、 from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages1 to 16, aninside back cover and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amen
、dment table on theinside front cover.BS4737-5.2:1988 BSI 01-1999 1 1 Scope This Section of BS4737 recommends symbols for use in diagrams of installed intruder alarm systems. In particular, it provides the means for conveying pictorially information required to be included in the system record of an
、installed intruder alarm system. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this Section of BS4737 are listed on the inside back cover. 2 General The symbols given in this standard are primarily intended for use when providing, in pictorial form, information required for inclusion in the syst
、em record of an installed intruder alarm system. NOTENot all of the information required for a system record can be provided by means of a diagram. For reasons of security these symbols are not, of necessity, required to be given in system designs, specifications or on building plans. However, where
、 symbols are included in any documentation concerning intruder alarm systems, the symbols given in this standard should be used. A symbol cannot convey in every case the extent and degree of information required regarding a component of a system and additional explanatory text will be required in ce
、rtain situations. In particular, the use of a detector symbol will not always provide sufficient information with regard to its coverage and should be accompanied by an indication of this, if it is not self-evident. Where the symbols given in this standard form part of a circuit diagram of a system,
、 the rest of the components and elements of the system should be shown by means of appropriate symbols from BS3939. The general symbol for an intruder alarm system component is an outline shape identifying the nature of its function; specific symbols have a character or device, i.e. a symbol element
、, inserted into the appropriate outline shape. The outline shapes chosen for the general symbols can all be drawn with the aid of a readily available computer flowchart stencil, without confusion with the symbols for computer functions; general symbols are identified in this standard by the figure0
、as the last digit of the serial number. Additional symbols can be generated by the insertion of the appropriate symbol element(s) into the general symbol outline. Preferred sizes for symbols are not given in this standard, but the size used should correspond with the scale of the diagram in which th
、ey are included whilst remaining legible and without risk of confusion between similar symbols. Diagrams of a typical intruder alarm installation using symbols in this standard are given in appendixA. Diagrams showing system interconnections, such as the example given in A.1, should use the symbols
、in the orientations shown in this standard. Diagrams showing the disposition of equipment with respect to protected premises, such as the example given in A.2, may use the symbols in appropriate orientations to indicate positioning and/or direction of coverage of component parts of the system.BS4737
