10、oreword This British Standard has been prepared under the direction of the Iron and Steel Standards Policy Committee and is a revision of BS4087:1966 which is withdrawn. This standard specifies the properties of wire which has been copper-covered by the electrolytic deposition process. Copper-covere
11、d steel wire manufactured by a different process may be supplied provided that all the requirements of this standard are met. In this revision all references to Imperial units have been deleted, small changes to phosphorous and sulphur limits are incorporated and reference to the rate of twisting in
12、 the torsion tests has been deleted. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. 14、nt cover.BS4087:1989 BSI 07-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard specifies the electrical and mechanical properties of cold drawn copper-covered steel wire for telephone and telegraph purposes, with two grades of conductivity and three of tensile strength (expressed as minimum breaking load) for a r
15、ange of wire diameters from0.51mm to4.88mm together with diameter tolerances for a range of nominal wire diameters. NOTE 1The information to be supplied by the purchaser in the enquiry and order is given in Appendix A. NOTE 2The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on i
16、nside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 2.1 coil a single length of finished wire, without joint or splice of any description, wound in close packed concentric rings 2.2 reel a cylindrical former with end flanges, constructed from wo
17、od, metal or plastics materials NOTEWhere the flanges are detachable (described as collapsible reel) the wire supported on the cylindrical former should still be described as a reel for the purposes of this standard. 2.3 batch any quantity of finished wire, presented for examination and test at any
18、one time 2.4 test piece a length of wire taken for test in accordance with this standard 2.5 sample one or more test pieces selected from a batch 3 Manufacture The wire shall be drawn from a copper-covered steel core of rod or wire. The steel core shall contain not more than 0.040% each of sulphur o
19、r phosphorus by cast analysis. The copper coating shall be securely bonded to the steel. There shall be no weld or joint made in the rod or wire after copper coating. 4 Quality of finished wire The finished wire shall be well and cleanly drawn to the dimensions specified in Table 2 and the copper co
20、ating shall be free from harmful defects and shall remain bonded to the steel. 5 Tolerances 5.1 Tolerance on diameter The tolerance on the nominal coated wire diameter shall be as given in Table 1. The nominal coated diameter of the wire shall be the mean of the two measurements made at right angles
21、 to each other. Table 1 Tolerances on diameter 5.2 Concentricity of the copper coating The minimum coating thickness, expressed as a percentage of the theoretical average thickness, shall be 95% for all sizes. The measurement shall be made by microscopic examination at a magnification of 200. The ca
22、lculated minimum coating thicknesses for a range of sizes between0.51mm and4.88mm and for30% and40% conductivity shall be as given in Table 2. NOTEThe theoretical average coating thickness T (in%) for any percentage by mass can be determined by the equation: where D is the diameter of conductor (in
23、mm); A sis the area of steel (in%). The area of steel A sas a percentage of total is given by the equation: where W sis the steel mass as percentage of total (in%); W cis the copper mass as percentage of total (in%). For the purpose of this calculation the copper mass as a percentage of the total is
24、 26% total mass for 30 % conductivity and 37.5 % total mass for40 % conductivity. 6 Inspection and testing Selection and testing of test pieces for all tests shall be carried out at the manufacturers works in accordance with clauses 7, 8, 9 and 10.
