11、. The requirements for salvage sheets of PVC-coated man-made fibre fabrics have been revised to include fabrics based on newer cloth constructions. These sheets have been subjected to a use trial carried out by the London Salvage Corps, and gave satisfactory results in service. Flammability requirem
12、ents based on test2 of BS5438:1976, applicable to all lightweight salvage sheets have been included. It is assumed that such requirements can only be met by the application of a flame resistant treatment, and due allowance has been made for the effect of such treatments on other properties. Research
13、 is in progress on the development of modified specimen mounting procedures for use with certain types of fabrics when tested using test2 of BS5438:1976. If this leads to more reproducible results then a suitable amendment will be made to this standard. This edition does not specify requirements for
14、 the scale of sampling to be employed. In appropriate cases guidance can be obtained from BS6001. Salvage sheets for fire service use should possess certain properties which the committee found impracticable to specify in precise terms such as: a) a high degree of waterproofness, particularly after
15、considerable use and cleaning; b) limitation of mass and bulk consistent with sufficient strength in order to increase the number of sheets which can be accommodated in the stowage space available on fire appliances and to facilitate the carrying and handling of the sheets at fires; c) resistance to
16、 abrasion and the action of oils and corrosive chemicals; d) ease of cleaning and maintenance of a clean appearance after considerable use; e) speed of drying; f) ease of repair. It is recognized that owing to inherent differences in materials and manufacture some of the standard sheets are likely t
17、o offer better performance than others in respect of individual properties on this list. Heavier constructions than those specified here are described in BS3408. 20、ster/cotton and coated man-made fibre fabrics intended for fire service use. NOTEThe titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Fabrics of flax or polyester/cotton 2.1 Yarn requirements 2.1.1 Flax. The yarns shall be manufactured from retted flax a
21、nd shall be boiled to such an extent that, when tested in accordance with the procedure described in5/82 of BS Handbook No.11:1974 the residual alkali solubility does not exceed10%. No chlorine shall be used in boiling. 2.1.2 Polyester/cotton. Warp yarns shall be two-fold, in which both single yarns
22、 shall consist of one end of280 dtex polyester filament corespun with an equal mass of cotton. Weft yarns shall be singles, consisting of two ends of280 dtex or one end of550dtex polyester filament corespun with at least an equal mass of cotton. The composition of the fabric shall be50% polyester: 5
23、0% cotton when determined in accordance with BS4407. 2.2 Construction. The fabric shall be uniformly woven in a plain weave from the yarns specified in2.1.1 and2.1.2. Polyester/cotton type2 fabric shall use a rip-stop construction by weaving two threads as one at intervals of approximately7mm in bot
24、h warp and weft directions. The fabric shall be free from defects with straight and firm selvedges and shall comply with the requirements of Table 1. In the unproofed state foreign matter shall not be present to such an extent as to prevent adequate proofing. Flax fabrics shall have a cropped finish
