It supersedes the 1970 edition of BS1808-1, which is withdrawn. BS1808-2 “Continuous stationery (for general

8、 office use)” was withdrawn in August 1983. The principal change from the previous edition is that the standard has been updated to reflect current practice. Much of the guidance on the layout of forms included in the previous edition has also been deleted as has other advisory material in the appen

9、dices. As before, however, the standard has been drawn up to satisfy most of the requirements of industry and commerce for different sizes of forms and letterheads, although it is recognized that other sizes will be needed to meet particular applications. For flat sheet printing, the sizes of sheets

10、 specified in this standard are ISO A sizes selected from the trimmed range in BS4000. For rotary printing, the sizes selected are the nearest approximations to these ISO A sizes and these have been selected from BS4623. In all cases, these sizes do not include a stub where this is used in the manuf

11、acture of the forms or letterheads. There are currently no international standards on this subject. Other British Standards on related subjects include BS4264 and BS5537. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are respons

12、ible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. 14、oduced by flat sheet printing or rotary printing. The location of the addressee panel and fold mark on such forms and letterheads intended for mailing in a DL window envelope are also specified. NOTE 1Dimensions of the DL window envelope as defined in BS4264 are reproduced in this standard to show h

15、ow they relate to the location of the specified addressee panel and fold mark. NOTE 2The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard the following definitions apply. 2.1 form single sheet designe

16、d to contain fixed and variable information in a prescribed format 2.2 head top edge of a form 2.3 landscape form or letterhead having its longer side at the head 2.4 letterhead single sheet on which is printed information identifying the originator 2.5 portrait form or letterhead having its shorter

17、 side at the head 2.6 stub small extension of a form or letterhead in which two or more sheets are fastened together. A line of perforations enables the sheets to be detached from the stub 3 Tolerances The tolerances to be applied to the sheet dimensions specified for flat sheet printing in Table 1

18、shall be as specified in 4.4 of BS4000:1983. The tolerances to be applied to the sheet dimensions specified for rotary printing in Table 1 shall be 1.5mm for metric dimensions and 0.06 in for imperial dimensions. 4 Sizes 4.1 Flat sheet printing The sizes of cut paper for flat sheet printing of forms

19、 and letterheads shall be one of the ISO A sizes shown in Table 1. 4.2 Rotary printing NOTERotary printing is often used in the manufacture of cut forms and letterheads to achieve more economic production. Printing cylinders used in this process are almost invariably inchbased and, therefore, a rang

20、e of compatible inch dimensions for cut sheets equivalent to the ISO A sizes is required. Two sizes are needed in each case depending on whether landscape or portrait format is used. In order to ensure that the sizes of cut sheets for rotary printing are as near as possible to the ISO A sizes, one s

21、ide only of the sheets shall be the compatible inch dimension, the other side being the exact ISO A metric dimension. For each ISO A size, the cut sheets shall be one of the two sizes specified in Table 1. Table 1 Cut paper sizes for flat sheet and rotary printing 5 Addressee panel and fold mark For

22、 the forms and letterheads that are intended for mailing in a DL window envelope (seeBS4264), the addressee panel and fold mark shall be located as shown in Figure 1 and there shall be a clearance area around three sides of the panel, as illustrated, to ensure that no unwanted information appears th

23、rough the window, irrespective of the positioning of the sheet in the envelope. NOTE 1Because of the relationship of the addressee panel and fold mark to the DL window envelope, neither the landscape version of an A4 sheet nor the portrait version of an A5 sheet is suitable for use in this style of

24、envelope. NOTE 2Forms or letterheads printed on sheets 8 in wide on rotary presses could have the three right-most characters in their addressee panels obscured by the envelope as a result of lateral shift. This is because the width of the sheet is 17mm less than the width of the envelope which mean

25、s that, in extreme circumstances, a 7mm strip down the right-hand edge of the addressee panel will not be visible through the envelope window. NOTE 3Figure 2 shows the dimensions of the DL window envelope specified in BS4264. It also shows how an A4 sheet (with addressee panel and folded in accordan

26、ce with this standard) relates to the envelope when placed in the most extreme position at the bottom and to the right of the envelope.
