Scope1.1 This consumer safety specification covers all flame-producing consumer products commonly known as utilitylighters (also known as grill lighters, firep
3、lace lighters, lightingrods, or gas matches) and such similar devices as defined in3.1.14. Matches are specifically excluded from this specifica-tion; flame-producing products intended for igniting cigars,pipes, and cigarettes are also specifically excluded from thissafety specification and are cove
4、red in Consumer SafetySpecification F400.1.2 This specification establishes requirements for utilitylighters to ensure a reasonable degree of safety for normal useand reasonably foreseeable misuse of such utility lighters byusers.1.3 Utility lighters, being flame-producing devices, can, ascan all fl
5、ame sources, present a potential hazard to the user.This specification cannot eliminate all hazards, but it isintended to minimize potential hazards of utility lighters tousers.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 flame, nthe result of combustion of fuel that pro-duces heat and often light that could be visible to the naked eyeunder normal or subdued lighting conditions.3.1.2 flame height, na linear distance from the tip of thevisible
11、flame to the end of the shield.3.1.3 flaring, na variance of flame height from the steady-state flame condition.3.1.4 fuel, na butane, isobutane, propane, or other lique-fied hydrocarbon, or a mixture containing any of these, whosevapor pressure at 24C (75F) exceeds a gage pressure of 103kPa (15 lbf

19、self-ignition, nthe propagation of a flameby other than deliberate manual operation, such as by droppingthe utility lighter, so as to cause the ignition system to beactivated and the flame to continue to burn.3.1.14 utility lighter, na hand-held, flame-producing de-vice with a manually-operated igni
20、tion system, 4 in. or greaterin length when in the fully extended position, employing a fuelas defined in 3.1.4, used primarily to ignite items such ascandles, fuel for fireplaces, charcoal or gas-fired grills, campstoves, lanterns, fuel-fired appliances or devices, pilot lights, ora combination of
21、these.3.1.14.1 utility lighter, adjustable, na utility lighter that isreceived by the user with a mechanism for the user to manuallyvary the height of the flame.3.1.14.2 utility lighter, disposable, na utility lighter that isreceived by the user with a supply of fuel and that is notintended to be re
22、fueled.3.1.14.3 utility lighter, nonadjustable, na utility lighterthat has a flame height preset by the manufacturer and is notprovided with a mechanism to adjust the flame height.3.1.14.4 utility lighter, refillable, na utility lighter that isintended to be refueled either by transferring fuel from
23、 anexternal container or by inserting a new prepackaged fuelreservoir.3.1.14.5 utility lighter, self-extinguishing, na utilitylighter that, once ignited, requires continuous intentional andpositive action to maintain a flame and that is subsequentlyextinguished upon the termination of such positive

General Requirements (Table 1)4.1 Flame GenerationIn order to minimize the possibilityof inadvertent or self-ignition, utility lighters shall require adeliberate manual operation to produce a flame.
