3、site materials for two pur-poses: to establish the material identification component ofdata-reporting requirements for test reporting and to provideinformation for the design of material property databases.1.1.1 This guide is the first part of a two-part modularapproach. The first part serves to ide

4、ntify the material and thesecond part serves to describe testing procedures and variablesand to record results.1.1.2 For mechanical testing, the related document is GuideE 1434. The interaction of this guide with Guide E 1434 isemphasized by the common numbering of data elements. DataElements A1 thr

5、ough G13 are included in this guide, andnumbering of data elements in Guide E 1434 begins with H1for the next data element block. This guide is most commonlyused in combination with a guide for reporting the testprocedures and results such as Guide E 1434.1.2 These guidelines are specific to fiber-r

6、einforcedpolymer-matrix composite materials. Composite materials,which also contain particulates or precipitated particles, arealso included provided they can be described adequately as afiller in the matrix.1.3 The data elements described in this guide are suggestedfor use in recording data in a co

7、mputerized database, which isdifferent from contractual reporting of test results. The lattertype of information is described in the material specification orshown in business transactions and is subject to agreementbetween the vendor and the user.1.4 This guide defines the information that is consi

8、deredessential to uniquely describe a composite material. Additionaldata elements that are considered desirable, but not essential,are also defined. The purpose is to facilitate efficient storageand retrieval of information with a computer and to allow themeaningful comparison of data from different

9、 sources.1.5 This guide with Guide E 1434 may be referenced by thedata reporting section of a test method to provide common datareporting requirements for mechanical tests of high-modulusfiber-reinforced polymer-matrix composite materials. Thisguide may also be useful for additional tests, for mater

10、ialidentification for databases at the property levels or for otheruses of material identification of composite materials.1.6 From this information and a guide such as GuideE 1434, the database designer should be able to construct thedata dictionary preparatory to developing a database schema.1.7 Da

11、ta elements in this guide are relevant to test data, dataas obtained in the test laboratory and historically recorded inlaboratory notebooks. Property data, data that have beenanalyzed and reviewed, require a different level of dataelements. Data elements for property data are provided inAnnex A1.2.

37、erial parameters that may influ-ence test results or material property values. The motivation forthis guide is the steadily increasing use of computerizeddatabases. However, these guidelines are equally appropriatefor data stored in a hard-copy form.4.3 This guide is for material identification and

38、descriptiononly. It does not include the recommended data elements formechanical test data or other specific types of test data. Theseitems are covered by separate formats to be referenced inmaterial specifications or other test standards.4.4 Composite materials are defined as two or more mate-rials

39、 that are combined on a macroscale. There is a gray areabetween composites and other material classes. Two examplesof this gray area between polymer matrix composites andplastics are toughened polystyrene and liquid crystal polymer.The present guide may be used to help the database designerdetermine

40、 how to handle materials that fall into this gray area.The selection of which guide to use, this guide or Guide E 1308for plastics, should depend on whether the additional dataelements in this guide are required by the data user, as follows.If information on orientation and form of reinforcement isn

41、eeded by the intended data/database user, the compositematerials guide may be more useful since it contains dataelements for this information. Appendix X1 contains a table,which provides guidelines for distinguishing between rein-forced polymers and polymer matrix composites.4.5 Composite materials

42、consist of a matrix phase and oneor more discrete reinforcements. Reinforcements may beinterpreted broadly to include any macroscale second material,including fibers, particulates, precipitated particles, or struc-tured domains of the parent material. The reinforcementscovered in this guide include

43、fibers and such particulates andprecipitated particles that can be described adequately as fillerwithin the matrix. The reinforcements may be polymers,metals, ceramics, or other materials. Sandwich constructionsare not covered by this guide; data recording for test methodswhich use a sandwich specim

44、en should refer to Guide E 1471for identification of the core material. These guidelines aresuitable for the identification of composites in simple shapes ofconstant thickness; for example, plates or tubes. For complexstructures, additional information relevant to a specific appli-cation may be requ

45、ired.4.6 Classification of composite materials is complicated bythe fact that composites are formed by combining differentmaterials in varying amounts and configurations; this results inan infinite number of possibilities. An effective identificationscheme must be capable of possible combinations wi

46、thoutoverburdening the system with details relevant only to alimited number of material systems. This guide provides bothessential data elements and data elements that are considereddesirable but not essential. Data elements are consideredessential if they are required to make a meaningful compariso

47、nof property data from different sources.4.7 Identification of constituent materials of the compositesis included to the level considered necessary for identificationof the composite. Additional information may be necessarywhen the constituent is considered independently. Guides forpolymers (E 1308)

48、, metals (E 1338), and reinforcements(E 1471) should be consulted in this case.4.8 Comparison of property data from different databaseswill be most meaningful if all the essential information definedby the guide is present. Comparison may still be possible ifessential information is omitted, but the

49、 usefulness of thecomparison may be greatly reduced.4.9 This information should not be considered restrictive.For example, a database designer may find it useful toaggregate several data elements, such as all data elements in atest method data element set or the material and chemicalclasses, into a single field. This may affect search strategies andother database operations. These considerations are beyond thescope of this guide.5. Data Reporting5.1 This guide is intended to provide common data report-ing requirements for material identification when used fo
