Scope1.1 This practice establishes the procedure for melting orheating, or both, of hot-applied joint and c
3、rack sealants andfillers in preparation for the making of test specimens used inthe laboratory evaluations of the sealants and fillers. Refer tothe specific standard material specification for samplingrequirements, test sample quantity, temperatures and times formelting and heating, and the number o
4、f specimens required fortesting.1.2 This practice is applicable to the hot-applied joint andcrack sealants and fillers used in both portland cement andasphaltic-concrete pavements.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated
5、 ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in nonconformancewith the standard.1.4 WarningMercury has been designated by the EPAand many state agencies as a hazardous material that can ca
6、usecentral nervous system, kidney, and liver damage. Mercury, orits vapor, may be hazardous to health and corrosive tomaterials. Caution should be taken when handling mercury andmercury-containing products. See the applicable product Ma-terial Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for details and EPAswebsitehttp

Significance and Use4.1 It is intended that this practice be used bymanufacturers, users, and testing agencies. The use of
12、thispractice establishes a uniform procedure for the melting orheating of hot-applied sealants and fillers. It is not intended toestablish test procedures or conditions of test which areassociated with each of the joint sealants and fillers.5. Standard Conditions5.1 The laboratory atmospheric condit
13、ions, hereinafter re-ferred to as standard conditions, shall be as detailed in PracticeE171/E171M,236 2 C (73.4 6 3.6 F) and 50 % relativehumidity 610 %. Apparatus6.1 Laboratory Melter:6.1.1 The equipment for melting of the joint sealant or fillershall be an oil jacketed melt
18、er equipped with a mechanicalagitator for the oil bath and material in the melting vat.6.1.2 The heat transfer oil shall be a high-flash-point oil,that is, in excess of 315 C (600 F).6.1.3 The heat source shall be thermostatically controlledand capable of maintaining the heat transfer oil temperatur
19、ewithin a tolerance of 63C(65 F) and capable of heating theoil to a maximum of 288 C (550 F).6.1.4 The mechanical agitator speed for the material shall be30 6 5 rpm when fully loaded, and the agitator speed for theoil bath shall be such to allow continuous circulation of the oil.6.1.5 Except when ad

Also seeNote 1.6.1.7 The thermometric device shall be a Type K thermo-couple with resolution of 1 C and the calibration verified inaccordance with Test Method E220 at least once per year. Usea liquid-in-glass thermometer, such as the 2F or 2C thermom-eter conforming to Specification E1,
22、or temperature measuringdevices such as platinum resistance thermometers that provideequivalent or better accuracy and precision, as the referencethermometer with the Thermocouples in Stirred Liquid Bathsprocedure. The reference thermometer traceability shall beestablished through a national metrolo
23、gy institution. Also seeNote 2.NOTE 1The removable can type melter as shown in Fig. 3 is verysimilar in design to the melter shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
