Scope1.1 This practice establishes the procedure for melting orheating, or both, of hot-applied joint and c

    3、rack sealants andfillers in preparation for the making of test specimens used inthe laboratory evaluations of the sealants and fillers. Refer tothe specific standard material specification for samplingrequirements, test sample quantity, temperatures and times formelting and heating, and the number o

    4、f specimens required fortesting.1.2 This practice is applicable to the hot-applied joint andcrack sealants and fillers used in both portland cement andasphaltic-concrete pavements.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated

    5、 ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in nonconformancewith the standard.1.4 WarningMercury has been designated by the EPAand many state agencies as a hazardous material that can ca

    6、usecentral nervous system, kidney, and liver damage. Mercury, orits vapor, may be hazardous to health and corrosive tomaterials. Caution should be taken when handling mercury andmercury-containing products. See the applicable product Ma-terial Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for details and EPAswebsitehttp

Significance and Use4.1 It is intended that this practice be used bymanufacturers, users, and testing agencies. The use of

    12、thispractice establishes a uniform procedure for the melting orheating of hot-applied sealants and fillers. It is not intended toestablish test procedures or conditions of test which areassociated with each of the joint sealants and fillers.5. Standard Conditions5.1 The laboratory atmospheric condit

    13、ions, hereinafter re-ferred to as standard conditions, shall be as detailed in PracticeE171/E171M,236 2 C (73.4 6 3.6 F) and 50 % relativehumidity 610 %. The material shall be conditioned for 24 h atstandard conditions before melting or heating.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Commit

Apparatus6.1 Laboratory Melter:6.1.1 The equipment for melting of the joint sealant or fillershall be an oil jacketed melt

    18、er equipped with a mechanicalagitator for the oil bath and material in the melting vat.6.1.2 The heat transfer oil shall be a high-flash-point oil,that is, in excess of 315 C (600 F).6.1.3 The heat source shall be thermostatically controlledand capable of maintaining the heat transfer oil temperatur

    19、ewithin a tolerance of 63C(65 F) and capable of heating theoil to a maximum of 288 C (550 F).6.1.4 The mechanical agitator speed for the material shall be30 6 5 rpm when fully loaded, and the agitator speed for theoil bath shall be such to allow continuous circulation of the oil.6.1.5 Except when ad

Also seeNote 1.6.1.7 The thermometric device shall be a Type K thermo-couple with resolution of 1 C and the calibration verified inaccordance with Test Method E220 at least once per year. Usea liquid-in-glass thermometer, such as the 2F or 2C thermom-eter conforming to Specification E1,

    22、or temperature measuringdevices such as platinum resistance thermometers that provideequivalent or better accuracy and precision, as the referencethermometer with the Thermocouples in Stirred Liquid Bathsprocedure. The reference thermometer traceability shall beestablished through a national metrolo

    23、gy institution. Also seeNote 2.NOTE 1The removable can type melter as shown in Fig. 3 is verysimilar in design to the melter shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 3s pots aredesigned to be removed so the melted material can be poured. Extra caremust be taken when using this type of melter. Check the manufact

    24、urersrecommended safety procedures before use.NOTE 2NIST is a national metrology institution.7. Precautions7.1 Prior to beginning sampling and heating of sealants orfillers, a Material Safety Data Sheet must be obtained from thesealant or filler manufacturer so that proper safe handlingtechniques wi

    25、ll be used.7.2 Maximum Heating TemperatureIt is imperative thatthe manufacturers maximum heating temperatures be obtainedfor the material to be evaluated. The temperature of thematerial must not exceed the maximum heating temperature.7.3 The laboratory melter unit should be located under anexhaust h

    26、ood to disperse fumes.7.4 Joint/crack sealants and fillers are manufactured from avariety of materials. To avoid compatibility problems, clean themelter so that it is free of all cleaning solvents and previouslymelted material.8. Procedure8.1 Sample Preparation:8.1.1 Obtain the sample which is deliv

    27、ered to the laboratoryfor testing in accordance with its respective standard materialspecification.8.1.2 Solid MaterialsFor sealants or fillers which are solidat 23 6 2 C (73.4 6 3.6 F), cut a complete vertical sectionfrom the material block as illustrated in Fig. 4, in order toobtain a uniform repr

    28、esentative sample and supply enoughproduct to pour all specimens. Also, if present, removecontainer liner by cutting it away.     29、nt Sealant Laboratory Melting UnitD5167 13 (2018)3approximately 50 g and place all segments from one verticalsection in the same pot and melt.8.1.3 Liquid MaterialsFor sealants which are liquid at 236 2 C (73.4 6 3.6 F), stir the sealant to be sampledthoroughly by hand or mechanically using a suitab

    30、le stirreruntil the material consistency is uniform and homogeneous.Consult the respective material specification for the requiredsample size.8.2 Heating Procedure:8.2.1 Heat the oil bath to a temperature that will bring thematerial to the specified temperature within 1 h. Eight to 15 C(14 to 27 F)

    31、above the maximum heating temperature of thematerial to be tested has been found to work satisfactorily forthe oil bath temperature (see 4.1 and 6.1.7) (refer to therespective material specification for the maximum oil bathtemperature).8.2.2 Sample AdditionThe sample pot in the melting unitshall be

    32、clean and free of any residue from previous heatedsealants or fillers, as well as cleaning materials.8.2.2.1 Solid MaterialsAdd four 50 6 10-g portions of thesealant or filler into the melting units pot and, with the agitatorrunning, bring the material to a pouring consistency not toexceed the manuf

    33、acturers maximum heating temperature.Addthe remaining segments at the rate of one 50-g segment/min,stopping the agitator (for not more than 10 s) while making theaddition. If the sample size required by the respective materialspecification is too large to be melted in one pot, additionalvertical sam

    34、ples must be obtained and melted to meet thecorrect sample size. All of the 50-g segments from one verticalsection must be placed in the same pot and melted as part of thetest. Keep the pot(s) covered at all times and the agitatorrunning, except when adding segments of sealant or filler.1.16 hp Spli

If the sample sizerequired b

    37、y the respective material specification is too large tobe melted in one pot, an additional pot shall be used. Beginmechanical stirring immediately after the sealant is added tothe pot(s).8.2.3 After the solid segments or liquid is added to themelter, regulate the oil bath temperature to bring the sa

    38、mple tothe temperature specified in the respective material specifica-tion within 1 h from the time the first portion of the materialwas added to the melter. Then, if required, continue heating forthe time and at the temperature required in the respectivematerial specification.8.2.4 Temperature Moni

    39、toring:8.2.4.1 When material is to be poured immediately uponreaching the specified temperature, check its temperature atmaximum 15-min intervals using a Type K thermocouple withthe calibration verifed in accordance with 6.1.7 to ensureconformance with specified temperature requirements. Stop themec

    40、hanical stirrer when measuring temperatures. If materialtemperatures exceed the maximum heating temperature or dropbelow the minimum application temperature after the pouringtemperature has been reached, discard the sample and redo theheating. Maintain appropriate records of times and tempera-tures

    41、to verify conformance with specification requirements.8.2.4.2 When prolonged heating is required (see Note 3), thesample temperature shall be monitored at intervals not toexceed 30 min to verify conformance to temperature require-ments. If material temperatures exceed the maximum heatingtemperature

    42、or drop below the minimum application tempera-ture after the pouring temperature has been reached, discard thesample and redo the heating. Maintain appropriate records oftimes and temperatures to verify conformance with specifica-tion requirements.NOTE 3Sometimes prolonged heating is required to ver

    43、ify that thematerial can meet all the requirements of the specification when prolongedheating situations happen in the field.9. Sample Pouring9.1 When using a melter with a bottom discharge, discardapproximately the first 50 g of material and then pour all testspecimens as required directly from the

    44、 melter within a periodof 10 min while continuing agitation.9.2 When using a melter with a removable sample pot, stopthe mechanical stirring device and then remove within 1 min.Immediately remove the sample pot from the melter and cleanthe oil residue from the outer pot surface. Pour all requiredspe
