Scope*1.1 This guide covers a list of test methods, practices, andspecifications that can be used for the testing and evaluation ofprinting inks, printed
3、 ink films, and substrates used in theirproduction (see Table 1).1.2 This guide includes methods that were developed to testpaints, paint films, and substrates, but may be adapted for usein testing printing inks and printed matter. Tests on rawmaterials and analytical methods in general have not bee

Tests for printing ink vehicles are covered in GuideD 6687.NOTE 1For the purpose of this guide, clear coatings such as overprintvarnishes are classed as printing inks.1.3 Other ASTM standards not specified here may also beapplicable.2. Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 The following definition is given in TerminologyD 16.3.1.2 printing ink, na colored or pigmented liquid or pastecomposition that dries t
6、o a solid film after application as a thinlayer by printing machinery.3.1.2.1 DiscussionPrinting inks may contain vehicles,colorants, waxes, solvents, and other additives. Bulk inks aretested for dispersion, tinting strength, density, heat and storagestability, rheology, and printing properties.3.2
7、Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 printed ink film, nthin layer of a printing inkdeposited onto a substrate by means of a laboratory orproduction printing press, occasionally by a drawdown orroll-out technique.3.2.1.1 DiscussionPrinted matter is the usual medium bywhich inks are t
8、ested for appearance properties, drying, andresistance to various agents.3.2.2 printing substrate, nmaterial onto which ink isdeposited in the production of printed matter.3.2.2.1 DiscussionPrinting substrates include paper, pa-perboard, plastic film, glass, and metallic surfaces. In thisguide, stan
9、dards relating to substrates are largely restricted toproperties associated with appearance and printability.4. Test Categories4.1 For convenience in selection, the test methods, prac-tices, and specifications, listed in this guide are classified intothree groups by type of printing process and in s
10、ubgroupsindicating whether the test is conducted on a bulk ink, a printedink film, or a substrate (see Table 2). The group is given in theleft column preceding the test method reference. The classifi-cations are as follows:4.1.1 Group 1Applicable in General:Class ABulk inks.Class BPrinted ink films.
