Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of hardness ofall types of mineral surfacing for use on bu
3、ilt-up roofs and isintended to provide an index of their ability to withstandphysical breakdown in handling.1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, eachsystem shall
4、 be used independently of the other. Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. The procedure calls for asample, free of fines, to be dropped a nominal distance of 1.2 m4 ft 400 times while inside a standardized
7、 test apparatus.4. Significance and Use4.1 This test method measures the resistance to physicalbreakdown in handling of built-up roofing aggregates.5. Apparatus5.1 A 1.2-m 4-ft length of clean 50-mm 2-in. iron pipefitted with a removable screw cap on both ends, and mountedon a suitable stand so that
8、 it can be rotated about an axisperpendicular to the long dimension of the pipe.5.2 Balance, 500-g 1 lb capacity, sensitive to 0.01 % of thecapacity.5.3 Sample Splitter, riffle-type.5.4 SievesA series of square-opening sieves, 8 in. indiameter, conforming to the requirements prescribed in Speci-fica
9、tion E11 and consisting of the following:Sieve Designation9.5-mm 38 in. 6.3-mm 14 in.3.35-mm No. 6 A solid collecting pan shall be fitted to the bottom of thestack of sieves.5.5 Mechanical Sieve Shaker, conforming to the require-ments prescribed in Test Method D451/D451M.6. Sampling6.1 Sample aggreg
10、ates received in bulk in accordance withPractice D75/D75M.6.2 For aggregates received in bags or small containers,select a number of bags or small containers at randomequivalent to the cube root of the total number in the shipment.7. Procedure7.1 Fractionate the aggregate, previously dried at 110C23
11、0F utilizing the riffle-type sample splitter, until a fractionis obtained that will permit the recovery, after hand sieving, ofabout 227 g 0.5-lb of aggregate passing through the 9.5-mm38-in. sieve and retained on the 6.3-mm 14-in. sieve.7.2 Place the 9.5-mm 38-in. and 6.3-mm 14-in. sievescontaining
12、 the 227 g 0.5-lb sample on the mechanical sieveshaker and agitate for 10 min to ensure complete removal ofthe finer materials.7.3 Weigh out 200 g 0.44 lb of the aggregate retained onthe 6.3-mm 14-in. sieve and place inside the 50-mm 2-in.pipe tester. Screw the caps tightly in place. Beginning with
